NYC-based artist serpentwithfeet (aka Josiah Wise) is likely a man, but he delievers vocal lines with the intensity of something that lives outside the bounds of this dimension. This month he dropped his latest single "four ethers," a track that showcases both his almighty R&B vocal prowess, and his classically trained singing background. Wise’s effortlessly florid singing would be remarkable on its own, but what’s even more gripping is the music he pairs his vocals with. The instrumentals on "four ethers" charge forward with the gravitas of a requiem piece, slowly building in suspense only to torturously cut to a muted bass drum the moment you’d expect a big auditory payout. There is something solemn, something ethereal, perhaps supernal released in serpentwithfeet’s music. Check out "four ethers" streaming below off of the newly released blisters EP, and be sure to catch him opening at Le Poisson Rouge on 9/30 for Jenny Hval.-Olivia Sisinni
The Two Lips serve up garage rock vibes on latest single “Repeat”
What if you spun your dial to the left and accidentally picked up a radio transmission from Mars? I’d like to think it’d sound something like The Two Lip‘s latest release "Repeat," a blitzed out garage rock track whose screeching opening sounds like it was snatched from a 1950’s outer-space B-movie. Despite the extraterrestrial leanings, the Austin-based three piece’s music is definitely of this earth–grounded primarily by heavy, fuzzy guitar riffs that cut the listener down with a visceral force. Though the track deals in garage hooks, the band blends in strong psych rock elements keeping things weird and oddly compelling. If music for funky martians is maybe your thing, check out "Repeat" streaming below.-Olivia Sisinni
Lamont Sincere releases new single ‘Huge Flirt’
In his three tracks so far, emerging NYC RnB artist Lamont Sincere has demonstrated an ability to write songs that have the non entirely vicious ability to get stuck in heads. His debut single "Above and Beyond," released last year, introduces his soaring vocals alongside a glittering synth-heavy production. His most recent song, "Huge Flirt" (streaming) keeps the electronic flavor, but is a little grimier, featuring more percussion and referencing classic Usher tacks. Sincere also has a knack for striking lyrics about romantic situations that most people can relate to. Lamont played SOB on August 30th, keep an eye on his Facebook profile for upcoming gigs. — Henry Solotaroff-Webber
Crushed Out premieres new video “Love Howl”
The newest bare-knuckled single/video combo from Brooklyn-based duo Crushed Out, "Love Howl," delivers blaring, bluesy garage rock reminiscent of powerful bands like Jack White’s side project Dead Weather. The track lives up to its name, with vocals yelping their way through fuzzy guitars, and a primal drumbeat. The video is DIY-ish but drips with animal magnetism, pairing the tune with images of mystical, half-human creatures losing themselves to their mating calls. (Why humans don’t do mating calls by the way? Let’s bring them back, NYC!) Be sure to catch Crushed Out at their Le Poisson Rogue album release show on September 28 with High Waisted, Caged Animals, and Prima. –Olivia Sisinni
Miranda Inanunza plays SOB’s on 9/26
On her Soundcloud profile, NYC RnB artist Miranda Inzunza says she "lowkey, wants to be the female Drake" and, although she still has a loooong way to go, she might be on the right path. Her output to date bears some sonic but mostly thematic (the lady doesn’t rap) resemblances to the music of the self described "God of Toronto." Floating on gracefully produced atmospheric tracks flirting with trip hop and ambient, her vocals have the perfect weight to them, allowing her lyrics, often about the pitfalls of relationships, to feel completely genuine, rather than sappy or overwrought. On her latest "Take (feat. JAHS)" she sings over airy, electronic and slightly trappy production about a partner that only "takes, takes, takes;" the beat perfectly emphasizes the vocals/lyrics and vice versa. Our favorit track ‘The Beginning’ (streaming below) is a dreamy electronic track expressing the love for the initial stages of relationships. Miranda Inanunza is one to watch, and if you happen to be in NYC, you can do so live at SOB’s on 9/26. — Henry Solotaroff-Webber
NYC Record of the Month: Bangladeafy – “Narcopaloma”
We are here, desperately tapping the big HELP button on our Life Alert pendant because the latest release from NYC’s Bangladeafy has left us bowled over on the floor. Narcopaloma, the band’s newest EP, is an unrelenting chaos machine, delivering proggy riffage at its absolute best–there’s not a single passage on here that feels either half baked or overworked. The duo of Jon Ehlers and Atif Haq also drop such technically intense licks that any four-piece band would be left eating their dust. Make no mistake, Narcopaloma is a mammoth work (well deserving of multiple listens), but it manages to feel consistently innovative rather than overly indulgent. The record kicks off with "Termites," a frenzied, sonic bomb that deals in both sledge-hammer, driving, brutishness, and jazzy, finessed grooves. "Act Like An Adult," the album’s third track, bursts its way through melodies, and puts Haq’s slick drum chops on full display. The EP’s devilish bends and turns culminate in "Trillionaire," a tune that somehow forges the band’s melodic mathcore affection with Latin-feel ostinato. It’s an unlikely match, but then again, there’s nothing predictable about this band. Check out "Termites" off Narcopaloma streaming below, and seriously, do yourself a favor and check out Bangladeafy playing with Seven)Suns and Cleric 9/27 at St. Vitus. We‘ll hedge our bets now that these are guys to watch. – Olivia Sisinni
The Majorleans premiere “Sunrise Mary” exclusively on The Deli
Have you ever had one of those nights where you accidentally end up spending dusk to dawn with another person? The Majorleans "Sunrise Mary" is a warm, driving tune that could easily be the soundtrack for one of those cathartic nights. In the video, the NYC-based folk rock band crafts a boy/girl narrative, but – set against the backdrop of late-night streets (and an early morning beach rendezvous) – the picture feels instantly familiar and immediately relatable. The video pairs well with the song, which itself showcases the band’s prowess for creating strong narratives, while feeling delicate without being fragile. Watch the premiere of the "Sunrise Mary" music video below, and catch the Majorleans Saturday September 17th at the Bonnie Festival in Astoria, Queens and also playing an acoustic set at The Wren on Bowery on Sunday September 18th. Keep your eyes peeled for their new record, Carouser’s End, coming out later this fall. – Olivia Sisinni

New England Record of the Month: Astronoid (live at Great Scott on 09.13)
Boston’s Astronoid interject beautifully dreamy instrumentation and ethereal vocals into black metal on their impressive debut full length Air, which was released in June on the Finnish metal label Blood Music. It cohesively blends shoegaze, thrash, prog-rock, black metal, and punk to form what they call “dream thrash”. While the five-piece embraces the clean atmospheric sounds of post-rock bands like Explosions in the Sky, they also offer a pummeling and swift assault of black metal blast beats that shows off drummer’s Matt St. Jean’s solid skills. Instead of resorting to the usual harsh and guttural screams the black metal genre is known for, vocalist Brett Boland uses an elegantly clean vocal delivery that channels the airy sounds of popular shoegaze acts such as Slowdive and Ride. It would be easy to lose sight of their goal on an LP that pulls from an eclectic group of influences, but Astronoid do a fantastic job at forging a sound that stays consistent throughout the album. They will be playing at Great Scott on September 13th in support of Ghost Bath! – John Honan
The Deli DC Area’s Record of the Month: Go Cozy – “Glaziao”
Named after the Puerto Rican slang word for perfect surfing conditions, Go Cozy’s debut full length Glaziao is a warm and hypnotic release that takes inspiration from ethereal acts such as The Sundays and The LA’s. The quintet creates deeply personal music while wielding airy guitar tones and lush melodies. Lyrically, the album touches on themes of self-loathing, introspection, and damaging love, while warm shimmering guitars and graceful harmonies from front-man Homero Salazar Andrujovich and Maria Sage keep Go Cozy’s music delightfully upbeat. Definitely an enjoyable find. – John Honan

Based out of Boston, MA, Tipling Rock are a four-piece indie rock outfit that channels the breezy vibes of surf-pop. Their latest single “Low Tide Love” is an effortlessly upbeat track characterized by warm, bouncing guitars and an undeniably catchy chorus delivered with a laid-back and optimistic tone. The band just released this music video for the track that highlights the wonderfully carefree nature of summer vacation as a young adult. Tipling Rock will be playing The Red Room in Boston on September 14th! – John Honan
NYC rockers Dead Heavens play St. Vitus on 9/20
Walter Schreifels is a NYC hardcore heavyweight, maybe best known for playing guitar for bands like Gorilla Biscuits and Youth of Today, so you wouldn’t expect his latest project to be a fuzzy, 70’s-feel rock band with a barefaced classic sound. But that’s exactly what Dead Heavens is. The group, which also features members from White Zombie and Cults, lays down luscious driving instrumentals with strong vocals lines that are instantly addictive. Their stand out track is "Feel Low" (streaming below) a tune that matches heavy, fuzzy riff-age with floating melodic vocals–a pairing that’s not entirely expected. Carve it up any way you’d like, but Dead Heavens is an unabashed return-to-roots band, churning out delicious licks that hit right in the gut. Check out "Feel Low" below, and if you’re hungry for more, see them live at St. Vitus on 9/20 with the Space Merchants and Gondola. – Olivia Sisinni
