Robert Earl Thomas Releases Noir-Tinged Video For “What Am I Gonna Do”

Posted on:

Robert Earl Thomas, lead guitarist of Brooklyn dream pop duo Widowspeak, has released a video for the track "What Am I Gonna Do" off of his upcoming solo debut Another Age. The video for the introspective song showcases intimate close-up shots of Thomas somberly walking through New York City beneath a grainy black and white filter reminiscent of film noir that emits a melancholic, yet atmospherically romantic moodiness. Another Age releases February 16th on Captured Tracks. – Alexander Beebe

Flamingosis’ flashy funk in new LP “A Groovy Thing” + live at Brooklyn Steel on 11.24

Posted on:

Electronic producer Flamingosis released his latest album, A Groovy Thing last month, a lush and exciting record that has the potential to please a wide range of ears, full of mellow nu-jazz influences, bossanova vibes, ultra-funky dance tracks, and pristine beats. Throughout the album, Flamingosis delivers quality samples, arrangements and grooves, as heard on the second track, "don’t lose the feeling" (streaming below), which showcases his knack for cosmic funk. Featuring appearances from local artist Birocratic and other electronic producers like Mtbrd and Stereocool, the album has "summer party" written all over it – so you better give it a spin before September 22nd! You can listen to it here. Don’t miss the live performance at Brooklyn Steel on November 24. – Tafari Lemma

Drawing from both Appalachian folk music and modern experimental acoustic styles, Brooklyn based artist Hite ( aka Julia Easterlin) presents a captivating sound alongside illustrious storytelling. In March, Hite released her debut album, Light of a Strange Day, a tranquil and harmonious record featuring delicate vocals that carries listeners to a southern mountain soundscape. Hellbirds deliver colorful rock to Bowery Electric on 08.08

Posted on:

Alt-rock trio Hellbirds showcases a springy mood in their newest album, 12 Songs on Film, a cheerful record that swings between classic ’90s, radio friendly alt-rock (we hear Cake here and there) and elegant pop a la’ Elvis Costello. As suggested by its title, the record is accompanied by a "full length album video" (streaming below), an interesting concept realized through the good ol’ green-screen trick. The idea is to visualize all the overdubs that went into the recordings through over-imposed images of the musicians while they are playing each part in the track. The trio will be bringing their fun tunes to Bowery Electric 08.08 – will they multiply on stage? –Tafari Lemma

Lulu Lewis brings noir pop to Bowery Electric tomorrow (08.05)

Posted on:

Even though NYC band Lulu Lewis claims to play "Harlem Punk," we believe the term "noir-garage pop" better describes their music, which, however, is not entirely devoid of a punk vein. Fronted by magnetic and clear voiced actress, producer, visual artist and songwriter Dylan Hundley, the quartet released stylish debut video "All Just Pretending" (streaming below) earlier in 2017, a stripped down, abrasive track featuring an intriguingly grainy and sophisticated production. We suspect Argentinian lead guitarist Pablo Martin (previously in Tom Tom Club) had a role in it. The band will carry their sound to Bowery Electric on 08.05. – Tafari Lemma

Big Huge celebrates “Cruel World” LP at BK Bazaar on 08.16

Posted on:

Big Huge have been joining the grit and DIY mentality of punk with infectiously catchy tunes since 2012, and their 2015 self-released EP Orama featured some ultra-fun, unstoppable tunes drenched in vintage influences. In that record, front-man Dan Reg’s twitchy vocals often evoked the sugary sweet melodies of 50’s pop with a layer of fuzzy distorted garage rock, while singing about love and enjoying the company of friends during the late night hours. The five-piece is about to release their debut full length "Cruel World" on Don Giovanni Records on August 11th, and, judging from the two preview singles, there is good reason to keep those good old ripped jeans handy, because the reference decade seems to be closer to 1977. The first opportunity to wear them comes on August 16th, when they will be celebrating the record’s release party at Brooklyn Bazaar. – John Honan
