Last-Minute Plans: Antennas Up @ The Whistler – Free Show!

Posted on:

Though electro-galactic trio, Antennas Up, may call Kansas City their official home, we’re holding on to their Chicago ties–and claim them as our own.

Fresh off this month’s SXSW festival, the trio is passing through Chicago tonight (and perhaps still nursing residual SX hangovers) for a show at Logan Square’s high-end watering hole, The Whistler. Equal parts funk (as heard in "Don’t Wait Up"), pop, and serendipitous space-rock (look no further than "5P4C35H1P"), Antennas boasts an eclectic sound and impressive live light-show (often with space helmets to boot); it will be interesting what they’ll manage to swing in the cozy confines of the Whistler.

Rounding out Tonight’s local lineup is Volcanoes Make Islands, and intermittent spinning, courtesy of DJ Screeble Dee. Free show! 21+. – Neph Basedow

This is Versailles @ Bottom Lounge

Posted on:

There is a forcefulness in the vocals of Caitlin Garibaldi. For the band This is Versailles she trades off shouting lyrics with guitar player Jaisen Ehas. Together they are propelling the band into the realm of high-power dance punk. Yet their dance is more of slam dance than anything else. Picture The Killers mashed with Minor Threat or maybe Fugazi, and you may come close to the sound of This is Versailles.

This is Versailles will be performing on April 1st at The Bottom Lounge with Light Pollution and Woodhands.

Crunk In Public

The latest EP, Crunk In Public, from the electro-hop duo Boomjuice is going to be a mainstay in my car stereo this Spring. This is the second release from Vapor Eyes and Capriquarius, and it finds them delving deep in the electronic and dance elements of their sound. Both of the duo’s releases can be downloaded for free. This new EP features collaborations with Keith Masters, Me Myself & Rhyme, and Ellen Loves Everything. It also features an interesting Radiohead cover, and as free download is absolutely worth getting.

Boomjuice will be performing on April 6th at Darkroom with Cars For Miles and Tribella, and at Double Door on April 28th.

Very Truly Yours

Indie pop darlings, Very Truly Yours have finally released their debut album, Things You Used To Say. The album is available through Skywriting Shop Records, and filled with sweet and sticky pop. The albums title track begins with a gentle and playful piano before the fragile vocals of Kristine, who also appears as Tiny Microphone, come in. Both the track and the album are light and fun and perfect springtime listens.

Very Truly Yours  will be playing with Casiotone for The Painfully Alone and Magical, Beautiful on May 4th at Schubas.

Earlier this month Rachel Eve made here first appearance on Daytrotter and she performed two tracks from 2009 LP Mouth Full of Feathers, and two unreleased tracks. The session turned out beautifully, and to celebrate she is giving the first twenty people to come to Schubas tonight (3/25) a complementary limited edition copy of session.

The show is only $10 ($8 in advance) and Roman Candle and Locksley will also be performing.

Dangerous: 5-18

Did you know that Rhymefest is releasing a sophomore album called El Che? If you thought that Kid Sister’s album was long awaited then you haven’t been paying attention to Rhymefest. El Che will finally be released on May 18th, but to hold you over a little longer he is releasing a new mixtape on April 1st. The mixtape will be called Dangerous: 5-18. The first track to leak from the mixtape just happens to feature John Mayer. What, you thought this was a Wale track? Here is what Fest has to say about that. "This song ("Letter") was recorded for the El Che album while I was still on Allido Records with live vocals from John Mayer. If the fans really dig the record, I will release a follow-up statement addressing the Wale situation (how he came about recording his version of "Letter") in the immediate future."
