From the Open Blog: School of Liars!

Posted on:

School of Liars aren’t incendiary, exotic or necessarily very cool. They aren’t angry at the world, they live in a house dubbed The Rocktagon where they play, record and drink beer. To label them Indie rock would be accurate at best, painfully obvious at worst. Lead Singer/Guitarist Jon Keenan has been described as "Mercurial", he needed to look up that word to make sure it was accurate. Bassist/Keyboardist/Vocalist Jeremy Holmesly has been described as a "multi-instrumentalist". Drummer Fernando De Urioste has been described as a "the one that plays drums." Heavily influenced by the Norwegian super group Bearwolfhorsen.

Homegrown Live: Hollywood Gossip, The Bubbles, Sleep Good

Posted on:

The 101X Homegrown Live series offers another installment tomorrow (9/24) at the Beauty Bar, featuring Hollywood Gossip, The Bubbles, and Sleep Good. The Bubbles – pictured above – haven’t received much of our digital ink, so let’s give them a little: Their LP Daydreaming in Technicolor came out this past August 19th to tremendous waves of acclaim ("A heavenly blast from the skies of psychedelic pop" sez the Austinist) and in addition to Homegrown on Friday they’ve got an upcoming at Beerland Oct. 13th. Oh and hey we like ’em too.

Dyer in the Morning, Sabbath Crow at Midnight: HAAM Benefit Day

Posted on:

One of the more generous + worthy festivals in town takes place tomorrow 9/21 all over Austin: it’s HAAM Benefit Day, kicking off at the unusual live music hour of 8AM (when current poll nominee Dan Dyer, above, will play Whole Foods) and continuing on past midnight. Many many participating businesses will donate 5% of the day’s proceeds to the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians. Full day’s lineup right here.

Codename: Rondo

Posted on:

I’m guessing it’s not because Ghostland Observatory are big fans of the Celtics’ starting point guard, but whatever the reason – we’ll have more for you on this soon – the Austin electro-wonder act’s fourth is christened Codename: Rondo and is due out October 26th. This is a little something to get you fired up about it. They’ll also play a release party right here in town on the 28th. We’ll have the album itself in our hot little hands soon, and a review out to you fine fine people shortly thereafter.

On the Eve Of Their Tour, Quiet Company’s Gear Gets Jacked

Posted on:

[Ed.: Forwarding this on to the Deli readership, help out if you can:]

The night before they were supposed to leave for a 3-week tour, hard working local band, Quiet Company, had their trailer broken into and a majority of their gear stolen.

The band is currently trying to make last minute plans in order to keep their tour dates uninterrupted and needs your help. Below is a list of instruments that were taken from their trailer, which is kept in a secure, gated location, no less. If you have any information, or are able to locate any of the gear below, please contact Paul at: paul@quietcompanymusic.com

Stolen Gear Includes:

1973 Fender Jazz bass (black with white pickguard, black block inlays in the neck, original bridge with the saddles zip tied together, Dimarzio pickups, a chunk out of the nut below the G string, pretty roadworn) http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/hs404.snc4/46717_436474828745_513488745_5013404_6673875_n.jpg

Late 90’s American Fender Telecaster (black with white pickguard, punisher sticker likely removed by now) http://www.jhjackson.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/quiet_company4.jpg

1994 to 1997 Japanese Fender Baritone Jaguar guitar (black with silver hardware) (looks like this one)http://www.instrumentpro.com/image.php?src=%2FMerchant2%2Fgraphics%2F00000001%2Ffen0259300.jpg

Epiphone ES-335 guitar (vintage sunburst finish, missing a screw on the tortoiseshell pickguard)http://lh4.ggpht.com/_ZRFBwHnEgEQ/SETf1QyOTkI/AAAAAAAAQ4Y/xRuUAmwsI40/IMG_9224.jpg

Album Review: The Authors’ Get Haunted

Posted on:

The Authors recent CD release, Get Haunted, is the soundtrack of every summer. Sporting a California-styled, beach-rock, New Wave sound, The Authors first full length record since their debut EP rolls riffs like waves of music into your ear holes. The sound of Get Haunted is something that falls between The Police, Dick Dale, at times Flock Of Seagulls, and something all their own, without having that awkward kind of acquired-taste sort of sound that such a hybrid would usually warrant. In fact, every song is catchy, toe-tapping, and addictive while still maintaining individuality among songs without dragging along like many first full-albums seem to do. The first track, "Timebomb", stands apart as something special. A slightly garage-grungier, harder rocking song compared to the offerings of the rest of the album, while being at the forefront to set the tone, while the following songs descend more and more into New Wave. The entire album is a gradient of genre, really, going from that grungier rock all the way to Hawaii Five-O styled guitar licks near the later songs of the album, showing a kind of range and variety paired with great confidence, all of which is rarely present in a first album. Though they are Austin darlings through and through, Get Haunted takes your head-space to Venice Beach during a summer sunset, without having to worry about all the reasons Austinites abhor California. Solid tunes, from a solid band, and at only $12, the album is more than worth the dollar per song.

Get Haunted debuted Sept. 7th.  The Authors will be at End of an Ear Records today (Sept. 10th), at 6pm, sporting free beer for fans.

The Frontier is Wild, and Now Has a Festival

Posted on:

The very first annual Wild Frontier Fest approaches rapidly, featuring a horn o’ plenty, or a cornucopia, or a wild and free bounty, or even a deluge of Austin bands, such as, in no particular order: Follow That Bird, Oh No Oh My, Sip Sip (currently running away with our Artist of the Month poll), Quiet Company, Shapes Have Fangs, Ringo Deathstarr, the Frontier Brothers (because what would a Frontier Fest be without its brethren?), Danny Malone, and many more, 26 bands in all. All put together by the Vagabond Collective and happening this Saturday, that’s 9/11, at the Mohawk, for the price of $12. Which is remarkable.

Full lineup is right here
