NYC Noise: Dirty Dishes talk about pedals on Delicious Audio

Posted on:

Noise is not a stranger in NYC, whether you are referring to the city’s ambient sound or its musical counterpart. The latter is – more often than not – generated by distorted guitars, fuzz pedals, and seemingly out of control electric guitarists. Jenny Tuite’s band Dirty Dishes inserts itself in this coltish rock tradition, which gave us unforgettably turbulent recordings by bands like the Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth and A Place To Bury Strangers. A skilled guitarist, Jenny is borderline obsessed with stompboxes, and had no problem sharing with our friends at Delicious Audio some effect related tricks she pulls off when making noise with her band.

Check out the Q&A with Dirty Dishes’ Jenny Tuite on Delicious Audio.

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

Mammal Dap kicks off New England tour tonight (07.27) in Burlington

Posted on:

North Hampton psych-fusion experts Mammal Dap will be making a triumphant return to the road tonight (July 27) at the Radio Bean in Burlington, VT, followed by a small set of dates around New England and New York in July and August. If you like the ‘80s, synthesizers, lush chords, thinking about outer space, good vibes, the ‘90s, and seriously nice dudes, this band is for you. Each show they’ve played has delighted the crowd with upbeat grooves, positive vibes, danceable jams, lightly psychedelic melodies, and a sound so tight you may as well assume it’s vinyl. It’s been a while since we’ve seen the Dap come this far north, and it should be a real treat to get a FREE concert at the Radio Bean on Wednesday, July 27 at 11:30, as well as in Portsmouth NH at the Birdseye Lounge on July 28. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear what’s been cooking in Western Mass. More tour-dates can be found here. – Dan Rome

Glass Gang releases video and single + announces London live debut

Posted on:

We somehow missed this video for single "Outside Your Love," released in June by NYC dark wave (or electro-shoegazer) trio Glass Gang, a band we often covered in the past and also booked at CMJ in 2014. The group today is releasing another single entitled "Wild Light," also streaming, and while they make no mention of an upcoming album that will gather the two songs, the news of the day is about their debut UK show, set to take place at The Waiting Room in Stoke Newington, London on Tuesday 8th November.

Frankie Cosmos extends world tour + unveils video for ‘Sinister’

Posted on:

Frankie Cosmos was rewarded with a NYC Record of the Month at the time of ‘Zentropy‘ (2014), and graced the cover of the 2015 issue of The Deli as a member of the band Porches, but her latest LP ‘Next Thing‘ is certainly the height of her career as a songwriter – a consistent record full of memorable songs and heart-felt words. The project’s mastermind Greta Kline and her band are about to embark on another round of US tour dates including a homecoming sold out show at Bowery Ballroom on August 6th, and more world tour dates have been announced today. A new video Sinister" was also unveiled today, one of the best singles from her latest album – check it out below.

Girlyboi releases new track ‘Popular Song’ from upcoming debut LP

Posted on:

We booked Brooklyn ambient-pop duo Girlyboi for our latest Northside Fest show (on the day of their anniversary!) after they became our artist of the month a few week earlier. The item has been working hard on their upcoming album, which in all likelihood will gather the various singles they have been releasing since 2015. Here’s a brand new one they just released, entitled popular songs, and slightly more upbeat than what they got us used to.

Amy Leon prepares release of debut LP + plays Joe’s Pub on 08.05

Posted on:

Poet/educator Amy Leon is born artistically of the Nuyorican Slam scene. As such, anthems about love and strength are fueled by undercurrents of social justice and feminism; soul and gospel vibrate from every fiber. Look for a solo debut this summer and in the interim check out her latest music video for "Burning in Birningham" (Streaming below) and catch ebullient live show, which includes often politically charged improvised spoken-word, on August 5 at Joe’s Pub. – Jason Grimste

Unsung Brooklyn DIY trio Young Bugs unveils fun video from debut EP

Posted on:

In an era when human lives predominantly moved to the two dimensions of screens, a band with 184 Facebook likes called Young Bugs is not bound to cause much social media envy – which may actually be reassuring. Nonetheless, the Brooklyn trio, and their new video for single Spanish Knives II (streaming below) should be looked at as an example of why rock’n’roll can still be a lot of fun – hey, it’s not that complicated! Grab some cheap instruments, a mic, even a friend with a video camera if you have one, and try to make your own stuff happen, musically and visually; slowly get better at it, while having fun and maybe even "giving" some! Young Bugs just released their debut EP "Spanish Knives," you can listen to another song from it here.

Ghost King plays the Gateway on 07.30 + talks about guitar FX with Delicious Audio

Posted on:

We enjoyed Ghost King‘s 2016 debut album "Bones" so much that we made it NYC Record of the Month back in April. The album sounds like a noteworthy recap of the (indie) guitar rock sound of the ’90s, with references to bands as disparate and glorious as Sonic Youth, the Violent Femmes, Pavement, The Pixies and Guided by Voices. The band will be performing at the Gateway on July 30th within a festival organized by a new blog focused on the Tri State Area Punk/DIY scene called Microscene. Check out their new video for under two minute single ‘Till You Belong to Me."

Looms premiere ‘Beach Day + tour the US in August

Posted on:

Brooklyn Indie rockers Looms premier their brand new song "Beach Day" exclusively on The Deli Mag today. Despite the track’s lively pace, there is a contemplative, melancholy vibe running throughout it. Liberal use of jazzy minor and seventh chords create a breezy atmosphere for lyrical content that suggests discontent. “But I know – I’ll get over this one. In time – I might not care” sings vocalist Sharif Mekawy in the airy chorus. A surprisingly tasty ten second guitar solo emerges during the songs zenith, underscoring Looms admitted admiration for bands like Wilco, Muse and Radiohead. The two song EP “Sleeping Days” (which includes also track “Sunday Blues”) was recorded at Converse Rubber Tracks in Brooklyn, mixed at Gearbox Recording Studio in Paramus, NJ and mastered at Turtletone Studio in NYC. The official release date is 8/5 via Portland Oregon’s Dazzleships Records, with the band scheduled to tour the Pacific Northwest in August. The quartet will also be playing a Live To Tape session at Chemistry Creative this Saturday night.  – Dave Cromwell – photo by Thomas Ignatius
