All NYC lo-fi bill at Shea Stadium on 11.2 with Spit, BEARS, and Jack

Posted on:

Brooklyn’s self-proclaimed “extra-virgin punk” band Spit (pictured) will play East Williamsburg’s very own Shea Stadium on Wednesday 11/2. October has proven kind to Spit; they’ve kept busy by playing shows at The Footlight and the Brooklyn Bazaar. Plus, they released their single “Paul Westerberg” (streaming here) as part of Heartbreaking Bravery’s A Step Forward: Vol. I compilation, from which all proceeds benefit the organization Rape Victim Advocates.

Spit will join Jack, the solo project of Brittany Costa, as well as doom folk group BEARS. This show kicks off BEARS’ East Coast Pumpkin Spice Tour, which runs from 11/2 to 11/19 and will take them from Brooklyn down to Mobile, Alabama. Head to Shea Stadium on 11/2 to see BEARS off, as well as hear great music from Spit and Jack. – Will Sisskind

Zula releases ‘Grasshopper’ LP + plays Sunnyvale on 12.15

Posted on:

We kind of missed Zula‘s announcement of the release of their new album ‘Grassopper,’ out at the end of August. As we had the chance to express when we made their 2013 album ‘This Hopeful‘ our NYC Record of the Month,’ with their blend of post rock and psych pop, the quartet is one of the most interesting NYC bands to come out of Brooklyn this decade. The new record sounds like an even stronger release, more solid in both the songwriting and production departements, and also more mature in terms of personality: the group has found its voice and it’s refining it, which is what happens when talented musicians stick around in the same band long enough to hone their skill and grow musically, together – a rare sight to behold these days. Don’t miss their live show at Sunnyvale on December 15th. – Photo by Alicia Walter

Infinity Shred releases sophomore LP ‘Long Distance,’ plays Shea Stadium on 11.18

Posted on:

Infinity Shred’s 2013 debut album Sanctuary was an instant cult favorite in NYC, where nothing else sounded remotely like it. Damon Hardjowirogo and George Stroud had previously worked together as Starscream, a dance-punk act that drew heavy influence from cyberpunk-ish soundtracks to 1980s Japanese films. A track off their last LP, Future, Towards the Edge of Forever (2011), titled “Thrashers (Infinity Shred),” gave the pair’s next act both its name and new direction. Infinity’s proggish techno reconfigures Jan Hammer’s coked-up ’80s instrumentals (think “The Miami Vice Theme”) into digital nightmares for the 21st century. Their brand new sophomore full length ‘Long Distance‘ features a sound slightly evolved, with the includion of fuzz guitar elements and a vibe that’s overall more ambient and dark. The trio will be embarking on an east coast tour in November, with a final date at Shea Stadium on the 18th. – This is mostly an excerpt from Brian Chidester’s piece ‘Electric Cafe’ on The Deli Magazine’s 41st issue.

Deli + Sofar Sounds event on 11.02 with Amy & the Engine, Ela Minus and Breanna Barbara

Posted on:

By now, most of us have seen a friend or family member break out the old acoustic guitar and play a mellow set of tunes right there in our living room. Maybe you yourself led the sing-along and did the playing? These days, private concerts are something of a new trend, and Sofar Sounds is a big part of it. Everything started in London, about six years ago, when two guys realized that most live shows felt kind of soulless. They started Sofar Sounds (aka Songs from a Room) as a way of booking intimate secret shows. Its website claims Sofar is now in over 200 cities worldwide; NYC is among them and (full disclosure) The Deli has helped book a show at a hush-hush location in Dumbo Heights on November 2! It’s going to be a (NYC) ladies-only line up with Amy & the Engine, Ela Minus and Breanna Barbara, three very different but equally talented artists. Miss it not, there will be free magazines as well!

Buy and or apply for a ticket here, and check out all the artists performing that night below!

BOYTOY tours Europe, unveils video for ‘Wild One’

Posted on:

Last year, Saara Untracht-Oakner and Glenn Van Dyke of BOYTOY released their delectable debut LP, Grackle. Approximately one year later to the day, the Brooklyn garage-poppers unveiled the video for single “Wild One”, which chronicles a wild night of Untracht-Oakner and Van Dyke roaming around Las Vegas, leading to their rambunctious desert romp as depicted in their music video for “Your Girl”. As of now, BOYTOY are on the last leg of their first European tour. Throughout October, they’ve rocked venues throughout Italy, France, Spain, and the UK. In the days ahead, they’ll entertain the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland before heading back to Italy for one final performance in Varese. Check out the list of remaining dates below, and don’t miss the shows if you happen to find yourself floating around those parts of Europe. – Will Sisskind

NYC EDM night at the BEMF on November 12th at Analog, with Turtle Bugg, Mike Servito and Honey Dijon

Posted on:

Turtle Bugg (from Brooklyn, pictured) is, like most artists associated with Bunker Records, of the retro/’80s house persuasion. He plays Analog on the 12 th within the Brooklyn Electronic Music Fest, alongside other locals Mike Servito and Honey Dijon. The latter, BTW, is probably the most completely retro house artist at BEMF this year, what with her use of full-throated soul singers and hard 4/4 beats, which sound life-affirming and totally non-cliché. For a full schedule of the BEMF, go here. – Brian Chidester

argonaut&wasp releases ‘Ha! Fiction EP,’ plays Rough Trade on 10.29

Posted on:

Brooklyn via Burlington lounge-dance band argonaut&wasp seems to have grown… a band since we last covered them! The duo led by Trey Schibli and Theo Klein, now a quintet, just released their sophomore EP ‘Ha! Fiction,’ and we can already sense good vibes taking over our lives. These guys just can’t make you feel blue, not even with a song titled "Loser Like You," their latest single streaming below, which somehow ended up making us think about something we’d like to say to Donald Trump. These guys’ more crowded live show should be fun, you’ll have a chance to witness it when they will be playing Rough Trade on October 29th.

All Your Sisters touring Eastern Europe in support of sophomore album ‘Uncomfortable Skin’

Posted on:

Those of you enamoured with the minimalistic and suspenceful sound of early post punk (think Joy Division, Bauhaus and The Cure from the Pornography years) should check out San Francisco’s duo All Your Sisters, who released their second full length album ‘Uncomfortable Skin‘ this past summer and is currently touring the whole of Europe, a land inhabited by music fans who, on average, appreciate that sound more than Americans do. The tour is a month long, 25+ date tour de force, and has already taken them from Germany to Moscow in two weeks. After playing St. Petersburg and Zurich back to back in the last two days, they’ll head to Zagreb, Basel, Paris, Amsterdam, up to Helsinki, and back east again to Warsaw and Berlin. Legendary stuff! They’ll be back in the US in December with a show at LA’s The Echo on the 4th.

Lewis Del Mar releases debut LP, tours Europe, talks about the creative process.

After gracing (two thirds of) The Deli’s 2016 SXSW issue‘s cover, Rockaway Beach, NY’s avant-soul-pop duo Lewis Del Mar had a pretty exciting year, which culminated in the recent release of their self titled debut album, and the following US and EU tour. The band started turning ears in 2015 with a series of memorable singles that blended an overall acoustic sound with electronic experimentation. The new single "Painting" (video streaming below) confirms their edgy sound and souldful songwriting.

Buzz Alert: Navy Gangs play Warsaw with HInds on 10.28

Posted on:

Having created an early buzz via their raucous live show, New York City’s Navy Gangs self-titled debut EP captures a similar raw appeal. Piercing extended vibrato guitar melody lines and sludgy bass-drums accompaniment create a feel comparable to Dinosaur Jr.’s (very) early days. While “Special Glands” (video streaming) may exhibit requisite “slacker rock” attitude, its central hook depicts a surprisingly direct vocal refrain. “Instant Play” bounces along in that J. Masic covering The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven” way where it straddles the line between serious and ironic. A guest female vocalist provides tandem vocals, smoothing out the rough edges. “Mondays” stomps with Americana inflected group chorus vocals while their instruments capture The Replacements ragged attitude. EP closer “That Party Sucked” alternates between Mascis-level burning guitar figures and softly sung verses, creating a heavy-light atmosphere enhancing the impact of both. The band play this Friday the 28th at Warsaw on a bill with Cold Fronts and Hinds. – Dave Cromwell

I Am Snow Angel releases single ‘Factory’ + plays Sofar Sound tomorrow (10.25)

Posted on:

2016 was a busy year for this Julie Kathryn (aka I Am Snow Angel), who released an EP, four singles, and a short remix set, in particular if you keep in mind that she is her own producer as well as singer/songwriter (and multi-instrumentalist). At the same time, she’s been actively working on an all-female musical collective called Female Frequency, founded in 2015. Her sound is completely digital, though this never undercuts her humanity. Newest single, “Factory,” is a dead ringer for eighties rare bird Jane Siberry. Since it’s not available for embedding, we are streamiing below our favorite track from her most recent repertoire, entitled "Fever." I am Snow Angel will be performing a Sofar Sound Show at a secret location tomorrow, Tuesday 10.25. – Brian Chidester
