Toronto’s noise rock band FRIGS have been rocking our sonic world big time for the past few weeks. So much so that we decided to put them on the cover of our SXSW 2018 issue of our sister mag The Deli, linked to the recent Austin Stompbox Exhibit. You can read the cover feature here. To complete the circle, we thought that a Q&A with the band’s guitarist Duncan Hay Jennings about his guitar pedals was in order – you can find it on our sister blog Delicious Audio.
Check out also this brand new video of single ‘Solid State’ from the band very well received debut album "Basic Behaviour."
Once a year, The Deli publishes an issue of The Deli that is NOT exclusively focused on NYC acts, but on artists based in all the 11 scenes we cover. That time of the year is now, an that issue is the 8th Austin issue of The Deli, which you can now read online here. The print version of it, in its glorious 7 inch format, will be available in print next week in Austin and in NYC shortly thereafter.
On the mag’s cover you’ll find Toronto’s noise rockers FRIGS, whose debut album Basic Behaviour has been rocking our world in the last few weeks.
The issue features other incredible emerging artists, including hip hop genius Nnamdi Ogbonnya, talented goofball popper Caroline Rose, and Los Angeles’ alt-rockers The Beaches among others – you can listen to all of them in the YouTube playlist below.
Also in the issue, an article entitled "Will Rock Explode Again?" which poses pognant questions about the future of rock’n’roll.

One of the most creative singer/songwriters to claim Texas as home, Walker Lukens has put in the time to get where he is. Eclectic pop ditties exude from his pores, and at the recent Float Fest he proved to have one of the hottest live shows in the Austin music scene. Walker Lukens will perform at SXSW tomorrow (03.13) at Cheer Up Charlies. Check out this interview he gave to our sister blog Delicious Audio about gear and the creative process. – Lee Ackerley
Wiki, of RATKING fame, isn’t slowing down. With the embers of his incendiary solo release No Mountains in Manhattan still smoldering in your headphones, he has been hard at work with Antwon and Lil Ugly Mane on some Hip Hop supergroup alchemy. They will all be performing solo sets tonight before taking the legendary DIY stage together. More Hip Hop History being made on the corner of Broadway and Myrtle. – BrokeMc
The music of Chicago’s noise-rock band Melkbelly incorporates elements of industrial sludge, shoegaze and math-rock to create a burst of deftly controlled chaos. Their 2017 LP “Nothing Valley” features delicious references to the unforgettable Bostonian bands signed by 4AD in the late 80’s/early ‘90s (read Pixies, Throwing Muses, and The Breeders). Our sister blog Delicious Audio asked them a few questions about their creative process and pedals in this interview.

Late in 2017, NYC based singer-songwriter (and vocalist for Wilder Maker) Katie Von Schleicher came out with a poignant and plaintive album with the not-so-poetic title Shitty Hits. From the very beginning, opener The Image treats the listener to Von Schleicher’s unusual, yet elegant melodies, supported by an unexpectedly noisy production based on a new, intriguing approach to loud/quiet/loud. The results are spectacular. The perfectly controlled, vaguely industrial clangor keeps coming in the following tracks, together with Katie’s incredibly beautiful vocal lines, forging a record that’s as unique as it is enjoyable and moving. Perhaps it’s true, these songs aren’t hits, but, on the other hand, they are definitely art.
Katie is touring the US and Europe this spring, don’t miss the 4.06 show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg and her performances at SXSW.
We stumbled upon the name Barrie while browsing through the list of artists participating in the 2018 edition of SXSW. This is a very new SXSW quintet with only one single under their belt, entitled "Canyons" (streaming below), an intriguing blend of lounge and dream pop with airy female vocals and a bass line that, at times, ventures into groovy disco fluorishes. The band seems to have hit the ground running, since they will be performing at SXSW this March and, the following week, at Baby’s All Right.

New York-based songwriter Caroline Rose has reinvented her sound on her sophomore LP Loner. Dawning an ironically sporty aesthetic, Rose delivers poignant tales of loneliness and disillusionment with a cigarette in hand. Contrasting the americana sensibilities of 2014’s I Will Not Be Afraid, Loner combines elements of 70s punk and straight ahead pop. She’s heading to Austin for SXSW, and will be back in NYC to play Rough Trade on April 3rd. – Charley Ruddell
