The Barrens record release party at Cameo on July 1st.

Posted on:

This Friday, July 1st, NYC psych-rock band The Barrens will release their first full-length, self-titled album at Cameo Gallery in Williamsburg. From what we can tell from the few songs available online the band in the new record keeps faith to its multifaceted sound: often aggressive and always eclectic, these guys alternate male and female vocals, plucked guitar and full-on distorted chords, and enjoy to follow sparse textural moment with sudden explosion of rock "evil".

From The Deli’s NYC Open Blog: Dillian’s new video

Posted on:

Check out this video (but mostly the song) by solo "experimenter" Dilian, who claims to be a "human who makes and records and plays music," employing "different sound making devices and mathematical equations" resulting "in a variety of shapes and sounds that can be enjoyed by people of all sizes". Whether this is true or not, we are really enjoying this dark electro-goth-shoegazer number… This is the Sister Mantos remix of the song "Barricades" – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here). June 29: Jump Into the Gospel end Pianos Residency + wear 3d glasses

Posted on:

Get spiritual, holy, and divine with Jump Into the Gospel as they mark the end of their month long Pianos residency on June 29. And if you prefer breasts (women’s breasts to be precise) to indie rock or if you dig both equally, you should be aware then that the free show is co-hosted by photographer Henry Hargreaves’s book 3DD: "A Celebration of Breasts" (in 3D!) – now that’s not very holy, is it? The band is getting some deserved attention lately so this is a good opportunity to check them out.

Finding Fiction releases free record in July

Posted on:

It’s indeed a perfect time for Brooklyn-based Finding Fiction to release a new record – which by the way will be free like these sunny days: “Migraines and Sheep” (scheduled for July) is an album pertinent to the season of rooftop parties, "chillaxing" on the beach, and bbq-ing with friends: it dances with upbeat percussion, bleats with dreamy keys and guitars, and comforts with its chilled out melodies and vocals. Check out the title-track single embedded here, and also the song “Weathermen”, which rings out with clunky drum sounds, and bleeps and whirrs in intricate ways like some sort of industrial-pop tune. Check out the band’s website for updates about the album release and upcoming shows. – Lauren Piper

The Lingering Doubts is more than what we said

Posted on:

In a blog post last week we mentioned The Lingering Doubts CD release show saying that they are "a one man project serving a rather intimate folk-pop sound". Well we were quite wrong. Their label LES Records cordially informed us that The Lingering Doubts are led by lower east side based songwriter Christian Dyas, but also include Todd Perlmutter (drums), Dave Steele (guitar), Ezra Gayle (Bass) and Alex Asher (Trombone). Also they brought to our attention that while there are some acoustic "intimate" songs, there are several others that provide a much stronger energy – like this one in the embedded video, which tackles an issue many emerging musicians are familiar with.
P.S. We have to say that we are huge fans of all the bands mentioned in this song, although we would also have included The Pixies and Sonic Youth.

NYC artists on the rise: Exemption

Posted on:

Ubiquitous Long Island power trio Exemption busts through the gate with another mind-bending collection of tunes on their psychedelically sprinkled nine-track affair PUBLIC CEMETERY PARTY. This multi-faceted unit allows its prog rock sensibilities to overshadow their stoner metal tendencies and modern metal panache this time around (“Cold Bodies”) while tumultuous percussive rumbles and layers of delectable guitars illuminate their variety-addled path to musical enlightenment (“White Animal”). Exuding as many moments of jaw dropping musical interludes as produced studio slickness (“Hyper Spiral”) with a boundless energy and freewheeling musical spirit at the helm, the compositions on this release are jam packed with an encyclopedic knowledge of a multitude of rock genres that reaches down deep in the grab bag to obtain wondrous musical prizes for folks who care to have their horizons expanded (“Hounds of Sound”). – MikeSOS

Weekly Feature: Alberta Cross

Posted on:

Petter Ericson Stakee (vocals, guitar) and Terry Wolfers (bass), grew up in the UK and other parts of Europe, began Alberta Cross, and settled in Brooklyn not too long ago. Austin Beede, Alec Higgins, and Sam Kearney joined the duo soon after and expanded AC’s sound, which crosses Southern rock twangs, pounding beats, and heartfelt elements extracted from folk and country. The band recently played two packed shows at The Rock Shop in Gowanus and will open twice for the Dave Matthews Band in Atlantic City (06.26) and Chicago (07.08)  – Read Meijin Bruttomesso’s interview with the band here.

Weekly Feature: Sherlock’s Daughter

Posted on:

The sound of Sherlock’s Daughter is a fascinating hybrid of delicate female lead vocals and somewhat unsettling instrumentation, leaning towards the droney and the dreamy. The emphasis can often be on chanting vocal choruses, with intricate percussion and pulsing keyboard undercurrents. – Lead vocalist and principal songwriter Tanya Horo helped shed some light on it all in this interview by Dave Cromwell, and listen to the single "Sons and Daughters from the band’s new EP, released in May 2011.

O’Death release new album + tour

Posted on:

After endless touring on the rollicking one-two punch of their debut record "Head Home" and sophomore "Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin", country-noise Brooklyn outfit O’Death was sidelined in the midst of their 2009 tour when drummer Rogers-Berry was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma. Ten months of chemotherapy and a shoulder replacement later, the group returned to the studio with a new outlook on life, and began work on the album they are releasing today: "Outside". Recorded over a two-month period, the longest they’ve ever spent on a production, the record comes with a video of the single "Bugs" (see it here) and – of course – with a tour starting at the end of August.

Post-Punk NYC legends Bush Tetras play 285 Kent Ave with Religious to Damn in support of recent 7″

Posted on:

Since we are in the mood for rehashing the glorious NYC past, here’s a reminder about a rare live appearance of legendary post punk band Bush Tetras, on June 24th at 285 Kent Ave. The band formed in the early 80s, and offered a sound that mixed punk attitude with funk rhythms in ways somewhat similar to what "co-scenesters" The Talking Heads were doing at the time, although with a less melodic approach. Lead singer Cynthia Sley’s spoken, casually atonal vocals had a significant influence on Sonic Youth Kim Gordon’s singing style. The band is still active with occasional releases (this is their latest) and live performances. One of our favorite emerging bands will open for them on Friday’s show: Religious to Damn, whose debut record was our March 2011 Deli CD of the Month – check out the embedded track.

Wyldlife, The Bullys and The Bad Parts open for CJ Ramone on July 9th at The Studio.

Posted on:

Punk’s not dead! On Saturday, July 9th, CJ Ramone (above in a picture from the good old days) comes to the Webster Hall’s Studio for a night of rock and roll mayhem. CJ will be joined by the legendary producer and musician Daniel Rey filling in on guitar. Together, the band will play a set comprised entirely of Ramones songs. Opening for CJ Ramone are up-and-coming rockers, Wyldlife, who have been generating a good amount of buzz in the past year or so and take their cues from 70s garage/punk bands like the New York Dolls, the Undertones, The Saints, and of course, the Ramones. Also on the bill are The Bad Parts and The Bullys. The Bullys are a veteran group of Queens-based punkers who have played alongside Tommy and Richie Ramone, as well as Andy Shernoff from the Dictators. They’re the kind of band that makes you want to party and put yourself through bodily harm. The Bad Parts are a super fun ska and punk band that sound as if Green Day got into an arm-wrestling match with The Pietasters. Clear your calenders and dust off your leather jackets! Doors open at 7pm, ages 19+. For more information: Pre-Sale Tickets here. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).
