From the NYC Open Blog: Yoni Gordon

Posted on:

After years and years of dragging his amp from show to show, hitting stage after stage with the electric fever of a man being moved by the holy spirit, after touring the country back and forth and back again, playing every kind of venue imaginable, after all that Yoni Gordon… gave up. And – wouldn’t you know it – that’s when things got interesting. He is now throwing down a slab of vinyl for you all called "The Hard Way" (out this summer on Kerosene Machine Records). He has nothing to prove to anyone anymore and the days of him being a "struggling artist" are over. Yoni Gordon is not "struggling" nor is he an artist. He is a showman, through and through. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here). The double musical identity of Graham Alexander

Posted on:

There’s a dangerous trend happening in New York right now, where teen pop trends from yesteryears are refurbished with new life and made relevant again for all our nostalgic needs. Artists like Adam Schenk has built a fine career re-channeling mid-90’s currents. For Graham Alexander, he picks up around McCartney’s mid-80’s ‘Press to Play,’ period, complete with DX-7 synths and charmingly sweet love stories. His latest single ‘Biggest Fan,’ celebrates the comforts of these textures (while the video celebrates the comforts of couches).

However easy it may be to dismiss The Beatles worshipper as retro-pop (heck, he even plays McCartney in the Broadway Beatles tribute ‘Rain’!), Alexander does it all so well that he ends up infusing the sound with a new sense of warmth and honesty. And that’s the most dangerous part about it. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

NYC punks Dirty Fences play Mercury on 06.24

Posted on:

Dirty Fences‘ rock’n’roll makes us want to get drunk and sweaty and nasty. Their brand new self-titled EP features five new tracks with that kind of straight forward crunch that can resurrect anybody’s dormant trouble-making instincts. The band’s choruses offer furious but catchy Clash-style chants that will get you screaming along – and they aren’t even afraid to venture into occasional chill inducing guitar solos. They stopped by Cake Shop last Saturday to play with Threats, Fine Spoils, and Evil Child, but if you missed that opportunity don’t fret, you can get your shirt wet on Sunday June 24 at Mercury, when they play with Grand Rapids. – Bob Raymonda

LC Fest ended on Saturday with WYATT, Heidi Sidelinker and Luke Wesley

Posted on:

WYATT (pictured), Heidi Sidelinker and Luke Wesley are among the 12 NYC artists who performed on the last night of the four-night-long, Deli sponsored 6th Annual LC Fest, organized by independent music community Local Correspondents at Bar4 in Park Slope, Brooklyn (444 7th Ave.).

WYATT, who released their debut EP last summer, is an upbeat folky ensemble effort fronted by NYC singer/songwriter Maddy Wyatt, while Heidi Sidelinker, who just spent the past five years with the NY-based indie rock band Lowry, is hard at work on her own solo effort, and tapping into her singer-songwriting roots and on twelve-string guitar. Luke Wesley plays immensely catchy piano pop rock, deftly blending the sounds of ’60s pop and ’90s college radio.

NYC band on the rise: Viva Mayday plays Pianos on 06.09

Posted on:

Bear with me here… if there was a way to merge the Arctic Monkeys with Red Hot Chili Peppers, you might be in the ballpark of Viva Mayday‘s sound. Like Alex Turner, singer Jafe and company perfectly convert his sadistic protests to anthemic screams on the catchy new single ‘Monster.’ Here, an otherwise perfectly catchy rock tune is turned on its head by exploring devilish thoughts while riding a dance groove.

A relatively young and stripped down three-piece, with only a couple tracks released so far (check out the equally catchy ‘Bay of Pigs’), the band has already warranted several remixes, and promises a debut LP later this year.

Sweat and shout with the group tomorrow night (06.09) when they play Pianos with The Yes Way & IAmDynamite. – Mike Levine

As out there as it gets: The Psychic Paramount plays Cameo on July 8

Posted on:

The nearly nine minute sonic assault that The Psychic Paramount unleashes on “DDB” (streaming below) is a veritable tour-de-force of ferociously thrashed guitars, rumbling bass, frantic clattering drums and hammered cymbals. No vocals are provided, since this exploratory expedition to the center of your psyched out mind is all that’s necessary. The similarly titled initials only “RW” further showcases the bands chops via sophisticated percussive beats, while guitars alternate between minimal open space tensions to all out bombastic thrash. “N6” presents waves of furiously strummed guitars and rolling snares that echoes bits of black metal while avoiding the pointless caterwauling of that genre. Their groove is far more fluid and natural, while sacrificing none of the power and force this music delivers. Real psych rock fans shouldn’t miss these guys when they play Cameo with Tunde Adebimpe’s Stabbing Eastward and Guardian Alien on July 8. – Dave Cromwell

NYC band on the rise: Black Light Dinner Party releases debut EP Party plays Cameo on 06.15

Posted on:

Black Light Dinner Party is dance music for people who don’t just want to dance. Whatever else you’d like to experience while listening to the band is, of course, up to you. But for sure… when you listen to a song like ‘Older Together,’ you really can’t help but move your head right along with your body – while hearing the group discussing their intimate details in tracks like the revealing ‘Older Together.’

This kind of intimacy has come closer to the cultural surface these days. Groups like The Weeknd and Destroyer have equally pulled their life’s messes inside the disco. But BLDP approaches this with an equal eye toward sonic retroness that lights up tracks like ‘Gold Chain’ like a breath of fresh air. It’s an approach I haven’t heard before, and it suits the group well.

Like the thinking man’s Passion Pit, (and the young person’s LCD Soundsystem), this is a group unafraid to add a lyrical weight to the dance floor, from a band as interested in the morning after as they are staying up all night.

Download their newest single ‘Leave it All’ (streaming below), and see them when they play Cameo live June 15th with St. Lucia and Slowdance. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Found in our digital submissions: Prospector

Posted on:

With riffs that would make Jack White proud, Prospector, with their latest EP "Between 0 &1," is proudly bringing the rock attitude back to a city that pretty much invented it. The band formerly known as Doppelgänger comes at their instruments like a jackhammer in tracks like the banging ‘HeartBreakin Man’ and ‘The Money Shot.’ With so many shoegazers around Brooklyn, here’s a band that looks you square in the face, with songs that won’t take no for an answer. – Mike Levine – This record was submitted for consideration here.

Casey Shea, Matt Singer and Paul Basile perform at 2nd evening of the LC Fest at Bar4

Posted on:

Casey Shea, Matt Singer and Paul Basile are among the 12 NYC artists performing on the second night of the four-night-long 6th Annual LC Fest, organized by independent music community Local Correspondents at Bar4 in Park Slope, Brooklyn (444 7th Ave.).

Casey Shea’s genuine, hook-filled rock ‘n’ roll calls to mind The Beatles, Kings of Leon, and Tom Petty, while (pictured and streaming below) Matt Singer’s goofy charm and surprising sincerity are reminiscent of Paul Simon or The Magnetic Fields. Matt’s latest album, The Build, was released in April, 2012 on Family Records. Paul Basile is the lead singer of the indie-folk band Great Elk. The band’s debut full-length album, Autogeography, was released in May, 2012, and draws comparisons to Band of Horses and My Morning Jacket. Shows are free, doors open at 6 p.m., and performances begin at 8 p.m. For a complete schedule of all four nights (from June 6 through June 9), go here.
