Horns and winds’ indie revenge: Bad Credit No Credit

Posted on:

Everyone knows a sexy guitar or bass line when they hear one right? But what about sexy horns and winds? Bad Credit No Credit – one of the more suprising acts to see around NYC – take full advantage of the seductive abilities of trumpet, sax, flute and even clarinet in their latest EP ‘The Whole Buffalo.’ The alt-rock mess leads with a maddening trumpet solo in ‘Rock Hudson’t Wristwatch,’ and things keep blazing from there, moving from a punk-driven insanity in ‘Shit Hits The Fan,’ to quieter moments in my favorite track, ‘Vampyre Song’ (streaming below). This band gives some under appreciated instruments their long-awaited place in front of a rock stage, along with theatrical (in a punky way) screaming female vocals. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Seen at The Deli’s B.E.A.F.: Beast Patrol

Posted on:

At a packed Cameo Gallery, Beast Patrol headlined on Saturday the Alt Rock stage of our Best of NYC Emerging Artists Fest 2013 (also known as The NYC B.E.A.F.), sharing the stage with Apollo RunSeasick Mama, Teen Girl Scientist Monthly and Vuvuzela). Fronted by Vanessa Bley on vocals and guitar, the trio performs with confidence and precision songs that marry open melodies, rock’n’roll punch, and a dark and tense undercurrent. The band’s video for Disbeliever created a remarkable buzz last year, while the one for "Plaster" (streaming below) confirmed this band’s potential. With an appeal reminiscent of bands like The Pretenders and late Eurythmics, this is a group that has the potential to be enjoyed by many.

Beast Patrol will perform at Northside on Thursday 06.13 at 2 pm during BMI’s Creators Kickoff luncheon at Mable’s Smokehouse.

The So So Glos play Northside Fest at Public Assembly 6.14

Posted on:

The Levine brothers, and step brother Zach Staggers who formed the Bay Ridge punk band known as The So So Glos, have have been a staple of the NYC scene for a few years now not only because of their music, but also because of their active involvement in the Brooklyn DIY scene (they were involved in Market Hotel during its brief existence, and are now part of the people behind Shea Stadium). Raging since 1991 (when Alex Levine was only 3 years old) with a self-made band name that mocks overly fake and vain people, they took to the punk genre with ease with their naturally rough turns and vocals. Operating out of Shea Stadium, the band recently self-released a new record on April 23rd titled Blowout. The band is set to play Public Assembly on June 14th as part of the Northside Fest: 1.21 Gigawatts Showcase with Shapes and Le Rug. Listen to “Lost Weekend” from the new record below! – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

Wild Leaves take their hazy Americana to Cameo on 06.09

Posted on:

Brooklyn’s Wild Leaves are Midwesterners far from home, which is the conclusion you get to after listening to anyone of their songs. A refreshing mix of traditional and electric tones, their bittersweet electric-folk sound (or "Hazy-Americana," as they call it) is a perfect mix of Real Estate’s chilled laid back atmospheres and Fleet Foxes’ reverb washed vocals. The band’s latest album “Wind and Rain” is loaded with dreamy folk songs, fitting wandering through both the forest and the urban jungle. Don’t miss their upcoming show this Sunday 6/9 at Cameo Art Gallery at 8pm opening for Cincinnati’s Fathers. – Paul Jordan Talbot

You Won’t plays House of Blues on June 20th +

Posted on:

Don’t you love taking a three-month sabbatical in the woods and emerge the talk of NPR, KEXP, and the New York Times? So goes the story of Boston-based duo You Won’t, comprised of childhood friends Josh Arnoudse and Raky Sastri seeking several different creative outlets before trying their hand at music in eastern Massachusetts. The result is 2012’s ‘Skeptic Goodbye’ (written by Arnoudse and produced by Sastri), a collection of low-fi lyricism rife with keyboards and acoustic that propelled them to the top of the must-listen listens, bolstered by a deal with Old Flame Records and a last-minute SXSW appearance. Their sound is high energy without being thoughtless and has a sense of humor that keeps even the most serious songs from getting bogged down in pretense. Best of all, they’re having fun with it — tracks like “Fat and Happy” and single “Three Car Garage” (streaming) are evidence enough.

The duo will be hitting up the House of Blues on June 20th with the Joy Formidable, then returning for the second glorious installment of Boston Calling on September 7th along with acts like Vampire Weekend and Bat for Lashes. – Jamie Loftus

Azar Swan releases new single

Posted on:

Elements of Kate Bush at her most adventurous emerge in the vocal stylings of Zorah Atash as she sings with her band Azar Swan on the hypnotic new single ‘In My Mouth.’ Its rhythmic pulse pushes forward with a teutonic minimalism that somehow manages to also swing in the process, positioning this track next to the output of Swedish electronic duo The Knife. The subject matter and overall sexual overtones is as primal as it gets, and the relatively new genre classification called "Witch House" may be as good a place as any for this emerging sound. The track has been released as a digital 7” on Pendu Sound Recordings and is well worth adding to your goth-dance playlist. – Dave Cromwell

Alt Rootsy night with Mree, The Stationary Set, Streets of Laredo, Julian Fulton + more

Posted on:

Thursday night at Spike Hill we’ll have a really fun AND interesting bill with a lot of talented artists dedicated to bringing roots music in new directions. The very young and talented songwriter Mree – a recent Deli artist of the month – has been gathering a lot of buzz with her ethereal songs and impeccable home made recordings and videos, which got hundreds of thousands of views; don’t miss her show at 9pm. As artsy as Mree, but slightly more upbeat and soulful, The Stationary Set have become a mainstay of the Brooklyn scene and will showcase their artsy soul-pop at 10.30. Julian Fulton and the Zombie Gospel will surely be happy to be sandwiched between these two artists; this band plays rootsy pop with psychedelic tinges – we are very curious to see them live. NZ imports Streets of Laredo (pictured) will keep faith to their mission of charming Newyorkers one by one with their contagious alt country, while Derrick & The Black Sea and Great Elk will open and close the night with their intense songs flirting with Americana and alt rock.

Times, ticket prices and full B.E.A.F. schedule can be found here.

B.E.A.F at Spike Hill: Electro night with Manicanparty, Cultfever, Clementine & the Galaxy, Kiss Slash Crooked Smile, Lips and more.

Posted on:

After two folky bills on Wednesday and Thursday, Spike Hill will host a decidedly electronic, almost entirely lady fronted show on Friday June 07, featuring a lot of bands we are looking forward to seeing in a live setting.

Headlining the night at 12.30 will be Manicanparty (pictured) – a band that has built a meaningful buzz without even having an official EP or LP out – with their angelic electro-pop contaminated by tribal and exotic influences. Right before them at 11.40, Cultfever will enterntain us once again (we booked them a bunch of times!) with their upbeat indie-pop that blends synths, guitars and samples. The third headliner of the night, Clementine & The Galaxy, quite appropriately features a more sci-fi, but still very melodic sound, and Julie Hardy’s angelic voice. Stephanie Brown’s brainchild Lips will hit the stage at 10, and fill the room with their loungy and melancholic – but not necessarily slow – electronic tunes. We can’t wait to see mainstay of the NYC scene Yula Beeri’s new electro project Kiss Slash Crooked Smile – the lady can sing and has a lot of presence, you may remember her in Nanuchka and Star Fucking Hipsterz. KNTRL – on the other hand – cannot count on a talented front lady because… they are two dudes – the only dude fronted band of the night as a matter of fact! They are the rocker act on the bill though, which is a great thing to be if you ask us – stick around for them until 1.15am – it’s a Friday night! Mystery band S&M (you don’t want to miss them) and talented rapper Melissa Czarnik will kick off the night at 7.30 and 8.20 respectively.
