Well tempered NYC lo fi: Unicycle Loves You plays Rock Shop on 8.24

Posted on:

Unicycle Loves You  – per the lyrics of their song “Wow Wave Cinema,” streaming below – claims nothing new, just a new name. At least they’re being honest? We think they actually stand out in the crowd. Hailing from the Indie epicenter of Brooklyn, the former Chicago residents tackle the noise pop genre with catchy rhythms and instrumentals that are both grating yet well-tempered. They recently completed their third LP titled "Failure" which they will give out for free (your choice of vinyl or CD with download card) at their upcoming show this Saturday 8/24 at The Rock Shop. – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

The Meaning of LIfe debuts new video

Posted on:

Try as I might, it’s not easy to pin down exactly what’s going on inside singer/songwriter Marta DeLeon’s head. The Meaning of LIfe, the Brooklyn art rock band she fronts, contains such an unexpected mixture of rock’s building blocks, that only a video as bizarrely fun as ”Laura V" would do. From directors Jeremiah McVay and Steven Huber, the band creates a world where people get eaten when dates go wrong, and guitarists run around the beach shouting psychedelic wisdom…. just check it out for yourself to see what I mean. Intensely artful, yet easily accessible, singer Marta DeLeon makes us believe in the experience. And pretty soon, you’ll be chanting ‘like gloves’ along with her too. Taken from their just released debut EP ‘Play Fuego,’ the music is fun, soaring, and surreal all at once.

See them on Sep 27 at Bushwick Shorewave Haus. And check out their new EP ‘Play Fuego’ here. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets).

Lily & The Parlour Tricks releases new single “Belle Gunness”

Posted on:

Starting a band is one of the easiest things in the world – but making it work, keeping at it, and forging material that’s consistently good is gargantuan challenge. This is why a track like Lily & The Parlour Trick‘s "Belle Gunness" (streaming below) should be cause for celebration. We’ve been following Lily’s musical adventures for quite some time – the band actually released an EP at one of our 2011 CMJ shows – and this tense, stomping, electric gospel definitely takes things to the next level through a new found sonic boldness. Wow, at this very moment the thought of Lily & the Parlour Tricks becoming some kind of female version of Nick Cave $ The Bad Seeds – or a darker version of Lucius –  is blowing our minds! And congrats to the band for getting this song placed in a BMW commercial!

Aly Tadros plays Joe’s Pub on 08.21

Posted on:

One of the better traveled artists to live and play in Brooklyn, Aly Tadros has toured throughout Europe, North America and Egypt extensively over the past four years, with her ukelele and steel string in hand. The folk artist has earned comparisons to the likes of Norah Jones for her wistful and breathy voice, but her wanderlust spirit conveys traditions far removed from what you’ll usually find in a singer-songwriter’s record.

Her sophomore LP ‘The Fits‘ is her widest statement yet. From the largess of opener ‘Silence and The Truth,’ to the churning ‘Not a Drop,’ she explores an intersection of classical and acoustic guitar shapes, wrapped under an intimate and honest lyricism. Most recently, she sings the bittersweet ballad ‘Whim’ alongside fellow folkie Ben Balmer. Spanning two countries, the song’s nomadic recording process evokes the personality of an artist never content to stay in one place for too long. Check the video out here and see her when she plays Joe’s Pub this Wednesday, August 21st. – Mike Levine @Goldnuggets).

Steve Shiffman & the Land of No releases new album + plays The Gutter on 09.12

Posted on:

Steve Shiffman’s voice has a natural appeal that really ties the band’s sound together. It is confident without being arrogant, and it sounds introspective without swimming in the murky waters of self-pity. The man – together with the musicians in Steve Shiffman & the Land of No – has released a new video for their song “Clown’s Lament” (see it here), a mellow, hopeful tune from their new album "Mon Dieu," which features a surprising number of songs, and a style somewhat reminiscent of the creative garage-psych of The Flaming Lips from the "Telephatic Surgery" years. Though it does not resemble the aesthetic of the Smashing Pumpkins’ “1979”, the single (streaming below) has the same subtle, addictive coolness to it. See the band live at The Gutter in Greenpoint on September 12. – Jack McGovern

Will Stratton benefit at Spin New York on 08.23

Posted on:

If you’re not familiar with Will Stratton, it’s about time you made his acquaintance. The singer-songwriter/composer has been leaving his mark on Brooklyn with fellow musicians like Sufjan Stevens since his debut (‘What the Night Said’) released back in 2007. Juggling between Nick Drake-like folk and highly organized orchestral compositions, records like ‘Post-Empire’ are filled with worlds of forgotten places just waiting to be explored.

Last year, Stratton was diagnosed with stage III testicular cancer, and through all these challenges, he’s kept up with his beautiful music, and unique portraits of American life on his Tumblr. Come support him at a benefit being hosted in his honor next Friday evening at 8pm (Aug 23) at Spin New York. There’ll be sets from Beat Radio, Kid in the Attic, Trevor Wilson, and yes… Will Stratton himself. It promises to be a fantastic show for a great cause. See you there. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

High Highs have an instantaneous calming quality in their wistful, melanchonic folk-pop. Weekly Feature: Small Multiples

Posted on:

Craig Hartley, singer and synth player, and Eli Friedmann, guitarist, had no idea that a casual college friendship would result in their genre-tripping two-man band Small Multiples, mixing nostalgic and modern. Nor did they anticipate their collective affinity for proggy, but distorted alt-rock, would land them a spot on NPR music even before recording an album. – Read Bianca Seidman’s interview with the band here, and check out their new video for single "Make Up" here – also streaming below.

Parquet Courts release new song from upcoming EP out on 10.08

Posted on:

One of the latest bands to break out of the Brooklyn DIY scene, Parquet Courts had a pretty fabulous 2013 this far – their debut album "Light Up Gold" received a "Best New Music" tag from Pitchfork late last year, which propelled the band’s popularity and sent them touring for much of the current year. Also, the band as of late obviously eat and enjoyed a lot of junk food – as you can see in all their press pictures. To cash in on the current surge of popularity (and therefore invest in more junk food), the band is about to release a new EP in October, entitled "Tally All the Things that you Broke." Check out the preview track "You’ve Got Me Wonderin’ Now," streaming below.

From the NYC Open Blog: Libel, live at The Gutter on 09.13

Posted on:

Libel is a Brooklyn power trio with a post-punk core, glam trimming and a healthy dollop of epic. Libel really should have had its heyday in 1993, when the group could have toured the country with simpatico acts such as Jawbox and Sunny Day Real Estate. It could have earned a moderate but loyal fan base that would be heartbroken at its sudden disintegration (likely after a poor-selling release on a major label). Twenty years later, with its legacy firmly established, the band would reunite for an epic global tour to celebrate the re-release of its debut full-length, which sounded ahead of its time on release but surprisingly pertinent in 2013. Now, we can skip all the painful steps in the story and pretend that album is “Music for Car Commercials” – check out opening track "This Is Love," streaming below. See Libel live at The Gutter on 09.13. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here). The Deli’s NYC Open Blog is powered by The Music Building.

From The Deli NYC’s online music submissions: Son of Dov

Posted on:

After listening through latest EP ‘gone to seed,’ I felt like I actually got to know singer-songwriter Dennis King pretty well. Under his acronym Son of Dov, King has released a short set of acoustic folk tunes meant for the wanderlust in all of us. From the rolling ‘Wheels of your Heart,’ to the lush campfire tone of ‘King of the World,’ Son of Dov is bittersweet in all his travels. Check out the New Jersey artist’s ep before your next road trip. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)
