From the NYC’s online music submissions: Let’s Be Loveless

Posted on:

Anyone who remembers the ups and downs of The Jesus and Mary Chain must give Brooklyn’s Let’s Be Loveless a listen. The band is as fun as they are emotional, as intimate as they are arena rock. This is shoegaze for people who can’t stand still (in this regard, listen to "Video Song" – streaming below).

Creating a swirling whirlwind under Abby Camaya’s otherwise softly idyllic vocals, the band sounds large and entirely cozy at the same time. Tracks like the pleading ‘Wake Up,’ from their latest self-titled EP, will scarily make you think Abby’s talking directly to you… but you’ve already woken up. This group has plenty of energy to spare. See them as new shows are soon to be announced in September. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

This Weekend: Captured Tracks celebrates 5 years with show at The Well

Posted on:

New York label Captured Tracks celebrates its 5th anniversary with a two day festival this weekend at The Well in Bushwick.

The Saturday show is headlined by breakout stars DIIV, who have redefined the standard for feel good guitar-bass interplay. Floating, reverberated vocals add to the joyous vibe that makes you want to dance and dream at the same time. Of equal importance on this night will surely be the romantic pop and classic hooks of MINKS. Their most recent release “Margot” is about as perfect a summer fall in love song one could possibly hope for. It’s the synth pop we loved in the 80’s with a truly engaging front vocalist and a chorus that tugs hard at your heart. Heavenly Beat, Chris Cohen and Blouse round out day 1.

Sunday’s show kicks off the first of the month with three homegrown acts whose prominence continues to rise. Widowspeak rightly places clear emphasis on Molly Hamilton’s somnolent vocals and centralized presence. Guitarist Robert Earl Thomas keeps everything from getting too dreamy and sleepy, by ripping guitar lines with forceful clarity. Beach Fossils continue to grow and expand their sound in unpredictable ways. The signature piercing guitar sound remains, but is now driven along by a more powerful percussive element. Wild Nothing, Soft Metals, Alex Calder and a “Special Guest” round out this second night.Dave Cromwell

NYC bands on the rise: Miko & The Musket

Posted on:

Miko & The Musket have the sound of a big band with something to prove. From Jazz-infused high octane harmonies, to Paul Simon-inspired tales of life across America, the band packs plenty of ammunition, and are set to convince everyone in their path of the virtues of how well folk can go with R&B when you have the right musicians behind it.

A remarkably young seven piece from New York, the band has a wide range of instrumentation covered. It shows it in new single ‘On Your Mark’ (streaming) where singer/main songwriter Miko de Leon pulls out all the stops with crazed harmonies, gnarled guitar lines, and some world-weary advice on how best to finish the race. Now the band’s getting ready to go out on tour in preparation for the release of their upcoming self-titled EP next month. So they should be bringing their exhaustingly enthusiastic show back to New York soon. In the meantime, check out ‘On Your Mark’ below. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

From the Open Blog: an ode to postpunk – TerribalAnamal’s new video

Posted on:

TeribalAnamal is a Brooklyn-based, art damaged trio that’s been playing around NYC since 2012. Their music and vision references the legendary days of early post punk (late 70s), when semi-insane and heavily drugged up bands like Throbbing Gristle, Pere Ubu and Devo redefined rock’s aesthetics through a series of claustrophobic, tense and provocative records, realized through a DIY approach to music borrowed from punk bands. They do a pretty good job at it in this video/song combo entitled "Mourning Dove." In their Open Blog entry they say: "Check out our EP on iTunes and Spotify if you want to, or if you don’t want to that’s cool too. There’s tons of rad music out there, especially around NYC, so we totally understand if this escapes your radar or it’s not your thing or whatever. Live long and prosper. Muah." – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here). The Deli’s NYC Open Blog is powered by The Music Building.

NYC Artists on the rise: Sophie Auster plays Rockwood on 09.18

Posted on:

Sophie Auster is not the kind of singer likely to come up too often. Like a cross between Fiona Apple’s righteous rage and Gillian Welch’s homespun folk yarns, her bittersweet alto’s deft sense of delivery is a shot to the skull, wrapped up in some of the most alluring, seductive torch songs you’re liable to find in the city. ‘Square Moon,’ heard on latest EP ‘Red Weather,’ packs a punch as she learns all about the trials of spending time in Paris. But she’s just as likely to deliver searing reflections on past loves (title track ‘Red Weather’), or to expose secret desires in the excellent video for ‘Run, Run, Run’ (also streaming below). See her live on September 18 at Rockwood. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

From the NYC’s submissions: Brooklyn Sugar Co. – live at Rockwood 2 on 09.13

Posted on:

For a band calling themselves Brooklyn Sugar Company, this group sounds like they belong in another place, in another time. Bearing the kind of blues-influenced ditties better associated with Chicago or New Orleans, and a sound that could have come from arena stadiums filled up in the ramblin’ 1970’s, the band is bringing back much needed attention to heartland roots rock, in a town not known for roots rock bands. Their latest self-titled LP takes a tour around sounds similar to Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Rick Springfield… bands of yesteryear that were just waiting to come back to life, and bringing it all to our backyard. See them when they play at Rockwood Music Hall on September 13. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

NYC bands on the rise: Hey Anna plays Bowery Electric on 09.07

Posted on:

As the summer winds down, there’s nothing like a good, clean, catchy indie pop tune to drag you back into enjoying the last sun and fun of the season. That’s what Hey Anna does. Hailing from NJ and Brooklyn, the band released in May a very solid EP titled "Pompette". Their catchy hooks are delivered by soothing female vocals, while an upbeat, edgy electric sound keeps thing moving in unexpected ways. Check out the song titled “Dance Until Three” below – you can get it here through a name-your-price system, together with the other songs on the EP, all are equally solid – and see them live when they play Bowery Electric on September 7th.  – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

Sticklips’ Johanna Warren announces solo debut LP “Fates”

Posted on:

Johanna Warren is having a busy year: she’s been on the road as a singer with Iron & Wine, recorded with Natalie Merchant and Elvis Perkins, and is about to self-release her debut solo record, "Fates," a collection of nine songs recorded over the course of three days in a haunted attic in upstate New York. For the last six years Warren has fronted the band Sticklips, an experimental project drawing on the eclectic influences of its shifting personnel. The 24-year-old songwriter’s debut solo album is stripped to the bone yet full and spacious, entirely acoustic yet lush with eery ambience. Influenced heavily by the early recordings of Elliott Smith, Warren strove to create an intimate sonic universe with very sparse arrangements, relying solely on the strength of her songwriting. – (photo credit: Gretchen Heinel) – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here). A Hip Hop Brass Band: The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble

Posted on:

Hailing from the Chi, but now also calling Brooklyn home, The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble is an eight-piece (not counting drums and bass!) outfit that conjures mesmerizing jams channeling funk, afrobeat, and jazz. Their compositions boast virtuosic structure, texture, and groove where the elements weave in and out of each other in an engrossing maelstrom of sound. It’s the type of music that makes you forget your body. From the first stab, your arms, hips, and gluteus maximus cease contact with your brain only to propel you from the venue an hour later drenched in sweat with an indelible smile plastered to your face. They return from Europe on September 20th for a show at the Knit in Brooklyn. Wear your "trancing shoes." – BrokeMC
