From The Deli NYC’s music submissions: Inland Traveler plays Rockwood on 10.02

Posted on:

Inland Traveler is that cozy bed and breakfast you pull over to and stay at for an evening. With their comforting blend of Appalachian harmony and gospel truths, the folk trio has a firm sense of family invested in their home recordings, and it shows in their latest single ‘November Moon‘. A song giving timely advice a home amid banjos and singer Katie Locke’s cooing alto. Check it out below and see the band when they play with Andrew James at Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2 on Wednesday, October 2nd. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Noisy NYC bands on the rise: Pampers tour with The Men

Posted on:

The four dedicated rockers that make up Brooklyn’s latest, noisiest buzz band, the rising artpunk band Pampers, have slipped into their diapers and been hard at work. Their self-titled debut LP is due out on October 29th via In The Red Records and the band has released 3 new tracks for stream, premiered by Brooklyn Vegan, in support of the upcoming release which was produced by Ben Greenburg of The Men. The aggressive and whirling guitar riffs combined with the rustic, fuzzy vocals take you back to the early days of punk, but their postmodern influences keep them current. The guys are set to open for The Men on their upcoming tour which kicks off in Rochester on 10/13. Listen to "Purple Brain" below via the band’s Bandcamp page! – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

From The Deli NYC’s online music submissions: Kassini

Posted on:

A listen to Kassini is like stepping into another world, where trap doors exist around every corner, and you never can be quite sure where one false move might take you. A hazy bridge existing somewhere between ethereal soundtrack and epic power pop, this is a record that demands it be played front to back. As conceptual a journey as anything you’re likely to take in sound and space this year, check it out below and see the band when they announce more shows later this year. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

NYC Artists on the rise: Christine Hoberg tours Europe

Posted on:

From the (virtual) a cappella gem ‘All That Hate‘ to the demanding vocal chant in ‘I, I, I, I…,’ Christine Hoberg has never been one to back down from a vocal challenge. But her new track brings us to another place entirely.

‘You Can’t See Me’ is an irrepressible electro pop song. In an unlikely collaboration with Milwaukee alt-dance troupe Kiings x, the results are unlike any place she’s taken us to so far. With stomping beats and a downtempo attitude, the collaboration reveals even crazier heights for Hoberg, and a grounded sense of pop for Kiings X.

The Brooklyn artist promises a new album later this year (‘World WIthin’), and we are excited to see how a lot of the material she’s been playing live will translate to the new record. Check out ‘You Can’t See Me’ below. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Weekly Feature: Ghost Pal plays Pianos on 10.03

Posted on:

Chamber popsters Ghost Pal may not be particularly spooky, but they certainly recall the ghosts of artists from across the board. Beatles-esque psychedelic accents, pop sensibility reminiscent of The Beach Boys, plus doses of R&B make it clear that Ghost Pal isn’t afraid to be blend unexpected ingredients. What ties their sound together is, ironically, that change is ever-present. Their lineup, fronted by Oliver Ignatius, is always fluctuating in size. The band’s "open door policy" just adds to their willingness to get weird… See them live at Pianos on October 3 – Links: Corrine Baggish’s Q&A with Ghost Pal.

The Everymen unveil new single from upcoming LP + play Matchless on 10.03

Posted on:

Upbeat NJ indie-rockers The Everymen, who landed on the cover of the Aquarian a few weeks ago (pictured) and are just coming off of a lively appearance at the memorable Hopscotch Festival, continue to surprise us with a new single featuring a cameo by New Pornographers’ AC Newman, who kills it on the tack’s dual vocals.

The rocking new song titled “A Girl Named Lou Pt. 2” takes the form of a celebratory anthem for being rejected by a lover, and sounds like a 5-minute rock and roll jam, but with a more complex structure. The first 0:47 seconds have actually been given their own song title, “Bl’ast Off” as tribute to the infamous hardcore band – it will serve as track one of the 8-member band’s sophomore LP, which is scheduled for the Spring of 2014. The intro track will be followed by “A Girl Named Lou Pt. 2,” streaming below. Check them out on 10/3 at Bar Matchless in Brooklyn. – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

Mind bending NYC sounds: dance duo Vostok

Posted on:

By thematically mixing elements of the Soviet and U.S. space-race with an overt Krautrock style, NYC band Vostok manage to take the listener to that ambiguous place where discovery is on the horizon rather than stuck in the tragedy-laden past. In a way, by couching the whole thing in retro German sound-scapes, Vostok invoke the cultural middle ground from a time when post-Nazi Germans had little voice and badly needed to re-invent themselves. With their spaced-out debut EP, “Intercosmos,” the band leaves the emotional weight to the listener’s imagination, suggesting that alternate histories are within reach if we simply change our own present. Forget trying to be “smart”… be transcendent for a change and catch Vostok this Saturday (09/20) at the Boiler Gallery in Williamsburg, where they perform a live soundtrack to artist Ati Maier’s mind-bending video installation of the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. A DIY-meets-Pink Floyd moment, if there ever was one.-Brian Chidester

TAUK releases album “Homunculus” + tours East Coast

Posted on:

Releasing their full-length album “Homunculus” under the guidance of Grammy-winning producer Robert Carrranza (Mars Volta, Jack Johnson) earlier this year, New York City’s TAUK prepares for a series of showcases in the coming days. The band produces sophisticated instrumental music without apparent effort – it could be described as post rock with heavier jam and funk influences.

Opening track “Dead Signal” (streaming below) evolves from mellotron wind whooshes to dominant guitar riffing over a rock solid bass and drums backbeat. Guitar phrasing and chord progressions echo the great fusion and jamband artists like Allan Holdsworth and The Allman Brothers Band. While keyboard textures throughout the album bring to mind the classic work of Brian Auger with his Oblivion Express. Returning to their home city after an extensive tour through the midwest and southern states (after earlier select opening dates supporting Robert Randolph and the Family Band this summer), the band will play Music Hall of Williamsburg on September 28th with Dopapod and Chromatropic. – Dave Cromwell

Clementine & the Galaxy release new video + play Pianos tonight (09.20)

Posted on:

“Lazer Gunz” is the name of the new single by Clementine & the Galaxy (a live video of the song here). On it, guitarist and composer Mike MacAllister pushes the dramatic energy to its extreme, which singer Julie Hardy more than keeps up with, through a fierce vocal performance that perfectly melds neon with emo. If it all feels kitsch at times, “Lazer Gunz” is also unforgettably melodic, a trademark of the band’s core strength. Too bad there aren’t any robot films out there that eschew political paranoia for sweet, old school romance. It beats war. Catch Clementine at Pianos this Friday, September 20th at 11pm. – Brian Chidester

Noteworthy NYC Electronica: Infinity Shred

Posted on:

The Miami Sound has come to NYC. “Miami Vice,” that is. First Yacht Rock, and now this. Turns out EVERYTHING is psychedelic if you wear the proper lenses, which, for those of us who like to go on magical mystery tours, is once more a reminder of the infinitude of the universe. With that in mind, consider Infinity Shred’s feature-length LP “Sanctuary,” a synth-prog pastiche that proves the ephemeral’s refusal to ephemerate. And also that white pixie dust is not bound to leave the atmosphere anytime soon. – Brian Chidester
