Electro-pop from New Jersey: Blood Cultures

Posted on:

New Jersey’s cryptic new electronic solo artist, Blood Cultures, has emerged into the local scene with a seductive and well thought-out debut single, titled “Indian Summer.” Although a biography is not provided online, and the one picture available conceals the musician’s face, there’s obviously something humble about this music, that could be described as a complex yet catchy blend of LCD Soundsystem’s fanfare with the ambience of Tycho, complemented by the artist’s own soothing vocals, that sounds like they are coming out from a bedroom’s corner. Listen to “Indian Summer” below via Soundcloud and wait to see what else Blood Cultures has up his sleeve. –Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

Weekly Feature: Julian Fulton – live at DROM on 10.10

Posted on:

Julian Fulton and the Zombie Gospel are kind of what you want to hear out of a rock’n’roll band nowadays. There’s enough vintage energy in their music to make it classifiable as rock n’ roll, but not enough for it to sound derivative and boring. It’s probably the eery optimism lurking within the melodic, psyched out jams. Check them out live at DROM on October 10 with Swear and Shake, Everest Cale and Jesse Denaro. – Links: John McGovern interview with Julian Fulton.

Weekly Feature: Mree

Posted on:

With modest beginnings as a DIY YouTube recording teen, New Jersey’s Mree’s songs and videos made her an (almost) instant internet success story. Her production and pop sensibilities have the potential to expand her audience far beyond the Folk scene. Her new album "Winterwell," released in August, reveals beautifully mixed and thought-out soundscape to accompany every one of her songs. – Links: Paul Jordan Talbot interview with Mree.

From The Deli NYC’s submissions: Glass Elephant

Posted on:

A band laid-back and emotional at the same time, Glass Elephant aims to put these contradictions to rest on their strong debut ‘Atlantic.’ Filled with soft crooning rock that gets lost at sea amidst reverb-drenched guitars, Russ Flynn’s slightly country-tinged baritone, and a couple lullaby woodwinds, the record is a good start to what could be an exciting addition to our borough’s beach-themed psych rock set.

The Brooklyn band is announcing new shows soon (but spent the summer in the studio in a seaside home out on Long Island to record a new EP). Check out ‘Breakwater’ below in the meantime. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Oh Honey plays Deli Rootsy CMJ Stage at Rockwood on 10.16

Posted on:

Oh Honey is the musical collaboration between singer-songwriters Danielle Bouchard and Mitch Collins. Introduced by mutual friends at a Brooklyn bar, the pair quickly realized a shared passion for songwriting, and soon decided to join forces. Bouchard leads their first single ‘Be Okay’ with bubblegum vocals, and is backed by jangly acoustic riffs, poppy drumbeats, syrupy harmonies and punchy choruses. If you were a fan of Owl City or Hello Goodbye, then this feel-good duo is definitely for you. See them live when they play The Deli’s CMJ Rootsy Stage on 10.16 at Rockwood, or on 10.10 at Littlefield. – Brescia Mascheretti

NYC Hip Hop: Mike Larry Draw unveils video for “Get Lite”

Posted on:

Mike Larry Draw directed the video for his new single, “Get Lite.” He boldly opted to step out of the focus and even cast a “young lady” to perform his raps for him as the star. Taken from his newest album, "Profound New Law," it is an upbeat dance jam that showcases his adept delivery and raspy rap style. Imagine Canibus on a younger more idealistic tip; a man with a message yet still unadulterated by labels and management. The album even has a counterpart album called “Profound New Law Commentary,” which showcases several full songs and otherwise provides a preview / commentary on his process and inspirations. He’s a funny guy, an impressive producer, graphic designer, and director. Mike Larry Draw deserves your attention. – BrokeMc

Katie Costello moves to NYC, plays CBGB Fest on 10.10

Posted on:

Returning for a second year in the city where it all began, the CBGB festival expects to feature approximately 500 bands and solo acts appearing from Oct. 9 through 13 at a myriad of bars, nightclubs and other spaces throughout Manhattan and Brooklyn. Along with legendary acts and artists long associated with the iconic brand, a number of emerging artist are scheduled to perform as well.

One such performer is the charmingly quirky Katie Costello, who recently relocated from LA to NYC, scheduled to take the stage at The Living Room on Oct. 10th. Her recent appearance at Cameo Gallery in support of rising UK songstress Lucy Rose had everyone in attendance marveling at Katie’s combination of wit and musical ability. Despite her sarcasm laced banter, Katie is a serious musician whose songs have been featured on CW shows “90210,” “One Tree Hill,” and ABC’s “Private Practice.” Her impressive vocal range and sensitivity on immediately appealing cuts like “I Will Surrender” (streaming) can’t help but win her new fans. The CBGB festival also includes film events as well as panel discussion and music-industry conferences, sharing similarities with Austin’s SXSW and the CMJ festival right here in NY (with which will quite amazingly overlap on 10.13). A full schedule can be found on the festival’s website including information on how to obtain badges to the shows. – Dave Cromwell

Twin Wave plays The Deli’s CMJ show at The Delancey on 10.15

Posted on:

Anyone worried that all the great psych bands have come and gone, need not fear. Twin Wave has come from above to make sure we’re all still having cozy, weird dreams filled with washy guitars, spacey synths, and immersive vocals.

Their popular track ‘Relapse’ (streaming) beats out a hasty trip-hop groove, and still manages to stay meditative and silky smooth at its center. Check it out below and see the band when they play at The Deli’s Electro Stage at The Delancey, upstairs, on Tuesday, October 15th. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Found in the NYC Open Blog: Black River Quartet

Posted on:

NYC based Black River Quartet has built up a reputation for intense and unpredictable live shows, veering between punk, noise, blues and then haunting surf. The band recently completed a live session on Brooklyn based independent radio station, The Indie Darkroom, prompting the show’s host to describe them as "…an absolute brute force of raw and deliberate musical expression…" Sounds intriguing indeed. – (as posted in The Deli’s Open Blog – post your band’s entries, videos, and Mp3s here).
