Best of 2013 Poll for Emerging New England Artists: FINAL RESULTS!

Posted on:

Deli Nation,

Our Year End Poll for Emerging New England Artists was – as usual – a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we pulled it off with remarkable flair!

Kudos to indie rock slackers Krill (pictured) for winning it hands down!

Thumbs up to multifaceted blues rock songwriter Sarah Borriello and to pop experimenters And the Kids.

Here is how it all went down: first, we let the local bands submit their music (for free) and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of 15+ New England scene experts (our jury) and asked them to nominate three more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are a geek interested in all the subtelties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music New England produced in the year 2013, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

Found through the Best of NYC Year End poll: oddlogic

Posted on:

There’s something very alluring about NYC’s oddlogic‘s really, REALLY sparse instrumental electronica. Rather than attacking you with an infinity of derivative tricks and predictable four on the floor beats (a fault of too many artists dedicated to this genre), Alex Gohorel plays its cards well, producing tracks that entrance the listener with simple but unexpected rhythmic developments (hear "Trickers, Cascades," streaming below) or use original samples sparingly to construct an intriguing sonic collage, like in "Blunders, Wonders," a track that sounds like The Chemical Brothers without any Big Beat distractions.

It must also be noted oddlogic’s prolificity: the project’s Soundcloud profile gets updated with new material on a monthly basis – that’s what happens when you are a productive person without band mates to deal with…

We found out about this band through our Year End Best of NYC Poll for Emerging Artists, they placed 13th in the Readers’ Poll section.

Fish Doctor becomes Stargazy + plays Pianos on 02.07

Posted on:

Brooklyn’s Stargazy is the new moniker for the artist previously known as Fish Doctor – who placed 2nd in our recent Best of 2013 Readers’ Poll – Indie Pop category. With this band, things are never as happy-go-surfing as they seem at first listen, with even the simple refrain of ‘and you drown in the Atlantic’ (from their latest single streaming below) hinting at a sinister layer of meaning hiding under the sunny melodies. Fun but far from throwaway, full of confidence and frivolity that smells of experience rather than naivety. Head down to the Lower East Side and catch them at Pianos on February 7th. – Francesca Baker

Best of NYC poll – JURORS’ VOTE: Wet, Big Ups, The Can’t Tells

Posted on:

This year 27 NYC "scene experts" (including booking agents from Bowery Presents, Webster Hall, Pianos, Cake Shop etc etc) helped us with our Best of NYC Poll 2013 for Emerging Artists by choosing their 3 favorite up and coming local acts. These jurors are comprised industry people who work with many local bands throughout the year (we’ll publish the list soon), and their vote is the most influencial in determining The Deli’s Best Emerging Artist of the Year.

Their votes this year produced a list of 60+ artists, which means that – as always – most jurors voted for different bands. But some bands appeared more than once in the "ballots": below we compiled a list of the artists who accumulated more points through the jurors vote only. Kudos to quirky Electro-Soul trio WET (pictured and streaming) for getting the top spot, and to Punk Rockers Big Ups and Indie Poppers The Can’t Tells for getting darn close, tied in second place!

After crunching the numbers of all the votes that came in from Jurors, Deli Writers and Readers we’ll publish the final results of The Best of NYC 2013 Poll for Emerging Artists – it should just take a couple of days.

Found through the Best of NYC Year End poll: Maginot and the “other” 90s

Posted on:

The Astoria Pop Rock outfit Maginot‘s debut EP ‘Big Changes,’ which dropped in August, is a concise summary of what the 90s guitar pop was all about. Their melodious hooks and verses are reminiscent of some of REM’s early work and their clean guitar work shows some influence from The Strokes.  Their crisp recordings – in these days of lo-fi epidemy – doesn’t hurt either. Listen below to the rock trio’s song “Know” from the debut release (which you can cop for free) via their Bandcamp page and look out for more to come from Maginot, a band that – according to their own notes – plans to “satisfy the growing demands of an insatiable public!” – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

Found through the Best of NYC Year End poll: the lo-fi soul of I/O – live at SOB’s tonight

Posted on:

The most talented artists know how to make a lot from very little. R’n’B Songwriter I/O – a project we discovered through our Best of NYC Poll for Emerging Artists – seems to enjoy these limitations. Whether wondering where things went wrong in the reflective ‘Wasted My TIme,’ or caught in the throes of passion for popular track ‘You Slay Me,’ I/O is a constant tinkerer with his arsenal of audio toys, using his talents to extract the hidden humanity found just beneath the surface of a robotic playground of beatbox grooves. I/O will be supporting his latest full-length ‘Isolation’ when he plays S.O.B’s tonight (8pm). Join him then to show him he’s not as isolated as he might think. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Best of 2013 Poll for Emerging Portland Artists: FINAL RESULTS!

Posted on:

Deli Nation,

Our Year End Poll for Emerging Portland Artists was – as usual – a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we pulled it of with remarkable flair!

Kudos to nocturnal psych-rockers Genders (pictured) for winning it! Thumbs up to ethereal dream poppers WL and to sugary indie pop maestros Wild Ones.

Here is how it all went down: first, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then we polled a list of 15+ Portland scene expert (our jury, list at the bottom) and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. Then we polled our writers, then we polled our readers. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are a geek interested in all the subtelties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules here (happy reading!). But if all you care about is the awesome new music Portland produced in the year 2013, this list is all you need. Enjoy!

NYC Artists on the rise: Threats keep downtown punk tradition alive

Posted on:

If you’re into dirty underground Rock n’ Roll and aren’t fussed on spilled beer, blown eardrums, and packed bars you’ve never heard of then chances are you’ll like Threats – a band that this year made it in our Best of NYC Poll for Emerging Artists, in the Revival Rock category. Despite having a barely there online presence and an album only available on Vinyl, Threats have a solid following in the downtown scene. Bonded by a love of booze and music, the band is fronted by Jack Ridley (Drowners‘ guitarist), with Drowners lead singer Matt Hitt on bass and Paulo Dell’Olio on drums. The sound is fast and loose, rough warehouse punk revival with subtle surf elements. With great songs, pro musicians and an insane live show these guys are definitely worth a look. Follow the band on Twitter and when and if Threats decide to play a show you might hear about it. Listen to i wanna get high now below. – Bianca Mascheretti

Emanuel and the Fear returned to Mercury + plans new release

Posted on:

Capable of embedding theremin parts in folk songs and creating glam rock songs with Harry Nilsson-esque brass ensembles, NYC’s band Emanuel And The Fear certainly doesn’t lack imagination, painting lush orchestrations that verge on rock-opera. After a European tour this past December, Emanuel Ayvas’s brainchild returned home to perform their first 2014 show at Mercury Lounge last Friday night. This band has gone through many changes both sonically and in terms of lineup, at one point having 11 members in its ranks. Since releasing their first self-titled debut EP in 2009, the sextet has gone on to release 3 records, none of which sounds alike. One trend we do notice is that their music has gotten progressively darker since 2010’s ‘Listen.’ They have a new album in the works, so definitely keep an eye on them. Check out "The janus Mirror" below, title track from their latest EP released last year.
