Brooklyn’s psych band TEEN, online searches’ public enemy #1 and one of the most creative Brooklyn groups of the moment – which also happens to be fully composed of female musicians – will be celebrating the release of their latest full length "The Way And Color" with a show at Baby’s All Right on May 22. Check out album opener "A Rose for You" (we can’t find a stream, but here’s the Spotify link) to get an idea of how enterteingly weird things can get with these ladies. The video streaming below is for the first single "Not For Long," which belongs to the underexplored "avant-ballad" musical category.

Winkie unveils video for ‘Illuminated’
Gothic dark gaze (or is that doom rock?) is alive and well in New York City. The latest entry into this forever cult genre comes from the band Winkie, who just released their first video ‘Illuminated’ (streaming below). The track is included in their full-length album “One Day We Pretended To Be Ghosts." Filmed by friends from the band Prima Primo (who recently performed at New Museum in New York), the video features alternating images of muted primary colors (red and blue) and stark black and white. Painted fingernails hold keyboards, while dark, murky images detail hands on guitars, in a constant slow motion atmosphere that reflects the song’s droney nature. With female vocals over a descending bass progression, thumping tom toms and clacking rimshot percussion, the track is sonically reminiscent of The Cure’s darkest period (“Pornography” era), although the super distorted vocals make the lyrics completely undiscernable. The band is working on the release of a new video for another track (“Arrows") later this month. – Dave Cromwell
Weekly Feature: Zula plays strings of NYC shows in June/July
With the release of their debut LP ‘This Hopeful,’ out on Inflated Records (Speedy Ortiz, Ava Luna)Psych Pop quartet Zula has become a band to be reckoned with. With songs about Upper West Side doormen and riding the subway, Zula’s surreal lyrical imagery could only be influenced by their hometown of New York City. The band has a string of local gigs scheduled in the next couple of months (see here for the full list), including one of The Deli’s Northside showcases at Spike Hill on June 14.

Psych Rockers Clouder releases new album ‘Sister Raygun’ + single ‘Phantom Girl’
Brooklyn’s grungy psych rockers Clouder make us feel like we’re getting high in our friend’s garage again, just like the good old days. Packed with fuzzy guitar riffs, strong vocals and an aggressive psych rock attitude, new single "Phantom Girl" may leave you confused at first, but its insane dark tension will get the most troubled of our readers aim at the play button again… It’s the second single from the band’s sophomore album ‘Sister Raygun’ which just dropped on March 4th via Fleeting Youth Records. A Deli premiere: Folding Legs’ video for ‘Glorious’ + live at Rough Trade on 05.16
We blogged about Brooklyn’s indie pop quartet Folding Legs last week, and after that they asked us if we were interested in premiering their new video. Well, it turns out we were! Lots of character here both in the song and the video, which shows an urban pistol duel between a Brooklyn hipster (the hero) and a Tea Party cowboy (the villain) for a beautiful girl, which out of metaphor is America. At least that’s how we see it – and yes we have been reading too much about politics lately. See Folding Legs at Rought Trade tomorrow May 16.
Elaphant celebrates EP release at Mercury on June 3rd
Elaphant, a band self-described as delivering music for the masses, have already shown they can work you into a dreamy haze with tracks like ‘End to Begin‘ and ‘Torn Limbs.’ Now they prove they can also rock the snot out of you, in latest track ‘Invader.’
NYC based singer/songwriter Andrew James pulled together a collective for this latest venture to showcase some of his most aggressive music yet. It’s a raw and emotionally searing experience, and as you’ll hear… plenty loud too. Listen to ‘Invader’ below, and see the group when they release their EP at Mercury Lounge on Tuesday, June 3rd at 8pm with Fancy Colors. – Mike Levine (@Goldnuggets)

Little Daylight signs to Capitol, plays Summer Stage, announces debut album
It’s official, electronic music (together with 90s rock) is taking over the NYC scene. In the last few weeks we blogged about an ever increasing number of local electro bands coming out of nowhere, getting tens of thousands of plays online and instant "buzz" status. Brooklyn’s electro pop trio Little Daylight, though, is not just an internet sensation: the band has a solid live show and released a super catchy debut EP in 2013, which includes gone-viral single ‘Overdose.’ That tune is a little too poppy for us dirty indie ex-kids, so we’ll stream instead the more dreamy track ‘Glitter and Gold.’ The band just signed with Capitol Records and is scheduled to release their debut album in the summer. You can see them live at Central Park’s Summer Stage on May 20th.

Sharkmuffin unveils new video for ‘Foul Play’ + plays Shea Stadium on 06.05
There’s something quite enjoyable about most lo-fi videos that mix creepy and cheesy elements, but some songs work better than others with them. The video for ‘Foul Play’ by that force of nature that is NYC’s Sharkmuffin is a fine example in this regard. The song alone, with its incendiary references to the psychedelic ’60s, would make pretty much any moving image look like a hallucination, and the video simply exacerbates that effect to a point of no return. It was premiered by She Shreds, a magazine dedicated to women guitarist and bassists – Sharkmuffin will play the mag’s party on June 5th at Shea Stadium.
Shall we call it Ind-Hip Hop? From Brooklyn, via Memphis: Cities Aviv
From Tes1’s X2 in 2003 to Kanye West’s Yeesus last year, electro-clash post-hip-hop is known for alternative deliveries and cacophonous sonics. Recent Memphis transplant Cities Aviv, has brought to NYC a brash and formidable album with ‘Come to Life.’ It’s something about his innovative cutting of lo-fi samples and the hard street style raps drenched in reverb; it’s 50 cent with Morrissey, Dilla with Kool Keith, Boards of Canada with Biggie, and yet something completely different. That in itself is an accomplishment in a genre where biting style is as endemic as claiming to have engendered it. Cities Aviv is letting the music speak for itself, and if you can sort through the jittering percussion and psychedelic vocal-processing, you might find yourself chanting along.

Seen Live: Mother
In February we blogged about mysterious new Brooklyn band, Mother. Their first addictive single "Easy," a dark, percussive alt-soul mid tempo gem, gained over 86k plays on Soundcloud in 10 days, followed in March 2014 by their second, even slower single "Victim", premiered via Stereogum (and streaming below). Shortly after the band played their first ever show to a sold out crowd at Pianos. Last Thursday Mother played the Neon Gold showcase at The Westway – which again sold out within days – and this time your favorite Deli writer managed to get in.
You never know what to expect from an electronic band that went viral on the web, simply because anybody these days can create great songs at home and be absolutely inept on stage. But this show exceeded our expectations. Front man Penn Badgley’s voice shone through the set with a captivating, soulful quality and the polished super-band behind him, featuring Jimmy Giannopoulos (Lolawolf, Reputante), Darren Will (Rathborne) and Simon Oscroft (No), proved their musical prowess as they perfectly captured and went above and beyond the distinctive, edgy sound of their first two singles. The set was packed with catchy, experimental, moody songs that bode well for a full length that should see the light at some point this year.
Mother will announce their summer tour schedule shortly, keep an eye out because tickets to these shows won’t last. – Brescia Mascheretti
