NJ Songwriter on the rise: Bitter’s Kiss

Posted on:

Under the apt moniker Bitter’s Kiss, New Jersey-based singer/songwriter Chloe Baker shares sweetly serious pop songs with her March-released eponymous debut record. With her gentle voice, the teenaged musician tells stories of longing and pain but also sheer joy in tracks that smoothly blend drum clasps and slightly fuzzy guitars. Although all of the eight songs are both pleasant and provocative, album highlight “No One Will” (streaming below) particularly intrigues with its ambiguous nature; is the yearning here hurtful or somehow helpful? The answer doesn’t really matter; Baker’s wisely ambiguous songwriting lets the listener interpret freely. – Zach Weg

After releasing their self-titled debut EP in 2013, Brooklyn pop-rock group Rocket & the Ghost just shared a new two track single. Featuring anthemic mid tempo ballad ‘Albuquerque’ and driving single ‘Come In From the Outside’ (streaming) the record melds Arcade Fire-like kinetics and Muse-esque grandeur into its own uplifting yet somewhat ominous energy. The band will be performing at the Highline Ballroom on 05.15 with Polaris. – Zach Weg

Turbo Fruits: Q&A about the creative process

Posted on:

Turbo Fruits‘ new album ‘No Control’ sees the Nashville quartet tackle more "adult" themes like relationships, break-ups and losses, conveying a full range of not-so-fun emotion without ever giving up their signature, punchy rock’n’roll sound. While on tour with Eternal Summers and Surfer Blood, front man Jonas Stein answered a few questions about the creative process of being in a band – check out the Q&A on our sister blog Delicious Audio.

Electronic NYC artist on the rise: Galcher Lustwerk

Posted on:

Emerging in 2012 as a prominent member of BK’s experimental electronic label/collective, White Material, producer/deejay Galcher Lustwerk (who made our recent list of Best Emerging NYC Artists) specializes in a trance-like mix of ambient and house music. On this year’s sleeper, “In the Place” (streaming) he sings/raps in a smoky voice that is nevertheless smooth as silk. Galcher will be releasing futures about to release new material on his new label Lustwerk Music.

NJ Songwriter on the rise: Matt Romagna

Posted on:

New Jersey-hailing singer/songwriter/producer Matt Romagna, who played Pianos on Saturday 05.09, delivers sunny folk with his first EP ‘We Will Be Alright‘ (2014). In the rolling, handclap-backed title track, the musician tells the story of travelers persevering on a literally rocky road while the airy “When My Ship Comes Sailing In” has him relating his own determination over unspooling guitars. The singer/songwriter genre may connote heartbreak and misery but Matt Romagna refreshingly opts for joyfulness. Listen to the upbeat EP single "We Will Be Alright" below. – Zach Weg

Brooklyn rapper Chelsea Reject releases ‘CMPLX’ at Mercury on Monday (5.11)

Posted on:

St. Lucia-rooted, Brooklyn-based rapper Chelsea Reject shoots verbal bullets with a deft blend of introspection and consciousness. On songs such as the keys-sparkled “Gotta Shine” (streaming), the twenty-one-year-old musician (born Chelsea Alexander) starts with an identifiable story of integrity-seeking but then, with a single “you,” widens her quick flow to touch on subjects such as impoverishment, oppression, and national tragedy. With the horn-sloped “Go,” Reject ponders her purpose in a money-rounded world, effectively speaking for fellow strivers. One gets the sense, when listening to her smoothly assured voice, though, that the artist isn’t trying to make grand statements as much as relate her views. She does so thrillingly. Chelsea Reject performs on Monday 5.11 at The Mercury Lounge as part of the release for her ‘CMPLX’ album. – Zach Weg

Statiqbloom brings industrial evil to Palisades tonight (08.05)

Posted on:

Do you ever miss those days when quality electronic bands pretended to be evil? Think Ministry, Prodigy or Nine Inch Nails… When we are not too stressed out, we actually do! Brooklyn band Statiqbloom (brainchild of Fade Kainer) is here to fill in this gap with two gritty EPs that sound as if they were forged in hell – a musically very competent hell. Single "Atrophy of Three" (straming below), from 2014’s split release with Russian band Zex Model, is a mind-bending tune for deranged humans and cyborgs programmed for dancing. If that sounds appealing to you, catch Statiqbloom live tonight (May 8) at Palisades.

The Danbees play Pianos tomorrow (05.08)

Posted on:

When a band is labeled by a magazine "The coolest young rock band in Brooklyn" (in this case, the band is The Danbees and the magazine VNDL) you’ve gotta give them a listen – although the term "cool" applied to "band" sounds a little vague. Last year The Danbees released a full length entitled "I’m in Control" of rather energetic alt rock ranging from the Strokes influenced to the bluesy, which gives us the impression of a band with potential but still in search of a defined identity. Our favorite track is vaguely R.E.M.-esque "Love is on the Rise," streaming below. They will be playing live at Pianos tomorrow (May 8).
