NYC Buzz Alert: Devyn Rose releases ‘Stellar’ EP

Posted on:

Claiming as her two biggest influences “Bone Thugs N Harmony & Whitney Houston,” Hatian artist Devyn Rose is going deep into shoegazing ballet shoes. There’s a definite 90’s synth lushness to her tracks reminiscent of early Bobby Brown and Roxette, but her delivery is snappy and crisp. A model, dancer, and multi-instrumentalist with a #1 Billboard hit under her belt, Miss Rose has a lot going for her. Her silky voice and provocative lyrics make for an aural assault that speaks to the new generation of braniac b-boys and b-girls, and her new video for “Cops x The Jury” (streaming) is a call to arms fit for the most raucous club dance floor. – BrokeMc

Loving You unveils collaborative video for “Wasted Love”

Posted on:

Alison Clancy is a Brooklynite who just can’t help but churn out art, and in this case we are not only referring to music – she fronts two bands: HUFF THIS! and Loving You. A dancer by trade (at the Metropolitan Opera), Alison is also involved in visual arts, and not just simply as a model/dancer. Recently she worked on a cross-continental collaboration with several artists from Brooklyn and Copenhagen to realize the video of Loving You’s song ‘Wasted Love’ (streaming) which was used in the theatrical Street Ballet ‘NINE BY SEVEN’, directed and produced by Danish conceptual artist Marco Evaristti. Tomorrow Friday 07.24 the duo will be bringing their edgy, cello and vocals (and dance) propelled music to 1172 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights Brooklyn.

Empress Of: interview about Gear and Creative Process – Debut LP ‘ME out in September

Posted on:

The two preview singles from Empress Of‘s upcoming album ‘Me’ (‘Kitty Kat,’ streaming below, and ‘Water Water’) reveal how the project of Brooklyn’s songwriter and electronic producer Lorely Rodriguez is evolving from its dream pop beginnings towards a more experimental and mature sound, closer to the avant-electro sensibility of artists like Bjork and Gang Gang Dance. Since Lorely produces her own music, we thought it would be interesting to ask her a few questions about her favorite gear and creative process… we did just that in our sister blog Delicious Audio – link below.

The Letter Yellow lands residency at The Living Room + unveils new single ‘Any Time of Day’

Posted on:

Syncopation. We wonder how many Brooklyn musicians are aware of what that means or sounds like, since it’s a musical figure that’s nothing short of anathema in many genres popular in the neighborhood like garage rock, punk and derivatives. The Letter Yellow‘s latest single ‘Any Time of Day’ (premiering below) is a song about waiting, which is what syncopation is all about. It opens with a groovy, syncopated bass line that immediately conveys sophisticated musicianship and some kind of jazzy influences – which actually aren’t developed in the remainder of the song. A minimal guitar and drum arrangement carries Randy Bergida’s smoky tenor towards a portentous chorus, filled with synthetic brass fanfare and subtle guitar noises. The trio landed a residency at The Living Room, a venue dear to The Deli, which recently moved from Ludlow Street to Metropolitan Ave. in Williamsburg. See them any Monday from July 27 to August 17.

Karl Kling unveils video for ‘I Will Wait’

Posted on:

Take a care free stroll though electro-pop-land with Portland’s own Karl Kling. His latest single, ‘I Will Wait’ released on Crazy Heart Records, comes paired with an official video that perfectly blends the bouncy, synth-pop music with arthouse aesthetics. We can’t help but feel reminded of the glory days of the ’80s and movies featuring the Brat Pack. Karl’s music is chock full of poppy hooks and catchy beats that are sure to make any able body dance like no one is watching. Be sure to keep up to date as he may be playing a venue near you soon! – Nathaniel Clubine

LA’s Dirty Dishes move to Brooklyn

Posted on:

The Deli NYC welcomes LA’s Dirty Dishes to the "lot" of land we call our "covered area." The noise rock duo settled in Brooklyn a few weeks ago, after releasing their latest full length ‘Guilty‘ on Exploding in Sound Records earlier in 2015. Active since 2010, this is a band that will certainly find a lot of supporters in their new borough’s DIY circuit, brimming with lovers of dissonance, fuzz and loud live performances. NYC seems a rather appropriate home for Dirty Dishes, since their sound is obviously following on the footsteps of Sonic Youth and other pioneers of the noise rock movement – in this regard, check out single ‘Red Roulette,’ streaming, and album opener ‘Thank You Come Again.’ This being said, the duo has always cultivated also a mellower, at times almost ambient side, which inspired songs like ‘Androginous Love Song‘ and ‘Dan Cortez‘ among others. The band just ended a US tour, we are looking forward to their first home show in NYC!

Wilsen steps it up with new single ‘Garden’ + plays Mercury on 08.07

Posted on:

Like a true lover, Wilsen‘s music might not catch your ear at first; but, if you give it a chance, it will court it, charm it and slowly conquer it – the ear, that is. That’s what happened to us in 2013, when the Brooklyn-based English songwriter released her debut album ‘Sirens’ – we named the album NYC Record of the Month and a few month later, after witnessing her live, put her on the cover of our fall/CMJ issue together with her band. Notwithstanding the fact that her music was already great, Wilsen’s new single ‘Garden" is stepping things up another notch, adding to her stellar songwriting talent a tasteful and luscious forward thinking electronic production. See her live at Mercury Lounge on August 7.

Tonight! Secret The Deli NYC / Sofar Sounds show

Posted on:

This upcoming Thursday, July 23, we’ll debut a new collaboration with the NYC branch of that rapidly expanding movement of "secret" DIY shows called Sofar Sounds. Since the show is secret, we won’t be able to tell you who is playing, but we can guarantee you:

1. Great music
2. A good time in a cool space
3. An audience attentive and social at once.

Oh, and if by any chance you are interested in meeting the staff of our NYC blog, somebody from The Deli will be there for sure (just ask the Sofar Sounds organizers and they’ll point you in the right direction).

To attend Sofar Sounds gigs you can either apply for free here and hope to be picked (due to high demand, Sofar Sound randomly chooses the attendees for each show) or you can jump the queue and guarantee your spot buying tickets – this event is sold out though, so maybe next time!

P.S. Ok, ok we’ll give you a hint: the female duo in the picture will be one of the performing acts.

The Britanys play Baby’s All Right tonight (07.17) with Las Rosas and Tall Juan

Posted on:

It’s always a good sign when a band maintains a good pace as far as releases are concerned. Brooklyn’s garage rockers The Britanys (a band whose singer might win the award for the ‘most nasal sounding vocals in the universe’) released their sophomore EP back in October 2014 and in June 2015 already had a new track for their fans, entitled ‘It’s What it Is’ (streaming below). The Ramones guitars, the attitude os Sex Pistols and Doo-Wop influences (a genre that lately we seem to find everywhere) blend effortlessly in the new single, which you’ll surely be able to experience in a live setting tonight (July 17th) during the band’s live show at Baby’s All Right with other local likemanded bands Tall Juan and Las Rosas, opening for Mexico’s garage rock hearos Rey Pila.

Indie pop-punks I Love Monsters regroup after four years + play Mercury on 08.18

Posted on:

New York City’s pop-punk indie fusion outfit I Love Monsters can be described as a blend of Blink-182-esque pop-punk and indie rock. Under their catchy, youthful sounding vocals, there’s a certain instrumental mastery evident in their rather complex compositions. The four-piece’s latest release is 2011’s ‘Two Words‘ which was produced by Andrew Maury (RAC, Ra Ra Riot) and recorded at Zavaro Studios. While they’re still making a name for themselves at home, their songs have been featured on major HBO and MTV shows like Entourage and Teen Mom. Listen to the wailing guitar riffs and upbeat tempo of the new EP’s intro track "Car Crash" below, and – if so inclined – see them live at Mercury on August 18, it’s their first in four years! – Michael Haskoor (@Tweetskoor)

Holy Ghost! Interview about synths and the Creative Process

Posted on:

Active since the beginning of the decade, NYC born and bred synth pop duo Holy Ghost has been able not only to remain relevant in an ever changing musical scene, but also to deliver new memorable singles with every new release. Their songs showcase two accomplished songwriters, something quite rare among electronic musicians. Their latest record ‘Work for Hire’ is a collection of remixes of songs by bands ranging from Phoenix to Blood Orange. Our sister blog Delicious Audio interviewed one half of the project Nick Millhiser about their creative process and what seems to be their main font of inspiration: synths. Check out their latest single "Okay," streaming below.

NYC electro-lounge duo Tripletrain plays Palisades on 07.25

Posted on:

We stumbled upon Brooklyn’s electronic duo Tripletrain while browsing the Palisades listings (they’ll be playing there on 07.25) and were immediately intrigued by their tunes, which have the rather unique feature of blending trippy, R’n’B and loungy influences. In 2014 the band released a very consistent EP entitled ‘Lights of the City,’ that offers a variety of well crafted electronic jams, from the jungly opener ‘Git to Love‘ to the soul sample dominated downtempo ‘All That I can Do.’ Check out below the loungy title track, featuring Chiara Noriko at the (sampled) vocals.
