There are a bunch of fine releases from local area artists this week, but I’ve been really digging my teeth into Liberation! from The Walkmen’s Peter Matthew Bauer. The collection of songs is predominantly autobiographical, touching “on such subjects as growing up in a Hindu Yoga cult, Scientology, the city of Philadelphia, the God Shiva, the city of Varanasi, Richard Dawkins and Jorge Luis Borges, and was heavily influenced by the work of Roberto Bolano & Elvis Presley.” Obviously, there has been a lot to take in with every listen, amidst beautifully hypnotic melodies. Liberation! is out today, and is available via Mexican Summer. Bauer will be celebrating its release tonight at Johnny Brenda’s supported by A.M. Mills, the new project from Drew Mills (ex-Blood Feathers), and Royal Shoals. Johnny Brenda’s, 1250 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – H.M. Kauffman
