Norwegian Arms Come Out Swinging at JB’s March 17

Philly’s own Norwegian Arms is playing a pretty buzzworthy show tonight at Johnny Brenda’s, where they’ll open for the Baltimore-based, Wham City no-wave breakouts Future Islands. I saw Norwegian Arms at band leader Brendan Mulvihill’s home-base, The Ox, and their freak-folk stylings translated into one frenetic and catchy performance. The intimacy of their recordings is just as super endearing. The aged, home-made sound gives it a fantastic feeling when supporting Mulvihill’s friendly voice that quakes like ancient floorboards. Some of the most enjoyable tracks are the ones released as solo demos on Mulviihill’s blog, which serves as a hub for his many creative endeavors. The tunes recall early Devendra Banhart and K Records cohort, Little Wings, with the addition of some Dodos-esque drumming. Norwegian Arms is set to release a limited pressing of some new recordings wrapped in bio-degradable and extremely eco-friendly packaging (props to Mulvihill & co. for utilizing art to highlight and improve on environmental issues). Dr. Dog‘s Eric Slick will be performing on stage with Norwegian Arms this evening. The show is also rounded out by fellow Phill-ites Club Lyfestile dance squad, who will be doing all they can to get booties-a-shakin’. Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., 9pm, $12, 21+ – Adam G.
