Two of Philadelphia’s finest jazz orchestras of all-time are sharing the stage tonight at The Blockley. First up is the West Philadelphia Orchestra , a diverse group of some of the city’s finest musicians known for their unique combination of Eastern European folk music, free jazz and dance music. Headlining the evening’s bill is the legendary Sun Ra Arkestra, under the guidance of Marshall Allen in the wake of Sun Ra’s passing in 1993. The Arkestra has made a name for themselves over the past few decades by bringing their tribal, spacey free jazz to an international level performing at large jazz festivals throughout the world. Although each group has different roots in jazz, both excel in taking their traditional forms of music to new and interesting levels, which will inevitably lead to an amazing night of music full of improvised jams.
