One week in Philly, one week of sun then right back to unpredictable rainfall – it’s enough to put anyone into a vitamin-D deprived funk, and the only way to counteract one of such magnitude is to double the dosage. Specifically, with the brand of mirror-ball funk and blues that Johnny Showcase has honed during his tenure in the local music scene. Coupling the seduction of 70s-era soul with witty lyricism, Johnny and his band of disco gypsies prove that seriously good music doesn’t have to take itself too seriously. David Sweeny, the man behind the leisure-suited alter ego, and his commitment to the character transform the stage into a cabaret. Also on the bill is New York’s, Mother Feather, which is self-described as “cock-rock” fronted by 100% woman, Ann Courtney. Both bands have powerful characters at their helm – powerful enough to banish any rainy-day funk (unfortunately, their talents don’t extend to the weather itself). Johnny Brenda’s, 1201 N. Frankford Ave., $12-$14, 9pm, 21+ – Shaylin O’Connell
