As Philly’s DIY music community continues to be pumping on all cylinders, our too-often-neglected indie hip-hop artists still struggle to find their place in this burgeoning music scene. It can be a daunting task to draw crowds for hip-hop events, especially with bills that lack marquee names, who come with plenty of radio play behind them. Tonight at Kung Fu Necktie, you’ll find a stacked homegrown lineup of wordsmiths, who are far from household names. Leading the charge will be the no frills, all-heart flow of Rhetoric Wallace. The young, up-and-comer has been flying under the radar, but he’s been using this time wisely refining his craft. In the days where marketing hype and social media beefs/friends playing too large of a part in defining your success, take the time search out artists who are pounding the pavement for the right reasons. Rhetoric Wallace will be banding together this evening with likeminded brethren Torito, Teef, Darko The Super, and Johann Sebastian. Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St., 8pm, $5, 21+ – Q.D. Tran
