Misty Boyce teams up with Doe Paoro for single “The Clearing”
Misty Boyce has a new collaboration out with Doe Paoro in the form of "The Clearing". The new single pairs Misty’s dark indie dream pop with Doe’s haunting voice, resulting in a track that burns with its emotion. "The Clearing" previews what’s to come on Boyce’s upcoming album genesis, a product of her thoughts over the last two years. Stemming from disaster, "The Clearing" and the songs on genesis cover a rebirth from trauma, as well as what it’s like to ruminate on that trauma day after day. They illuminate Boyce’s view on the female experience, as well as the freedoms and lack thereof associated with it. Take a listen to "The Clearing" below, and check out genesis when it comes out on September 25th. – Will Sisskind

Gillian elevates above the norm in new single “High”
Regarding the modern indie-pop aesthetic, Boston’s Gillian perfects it: classy-creeping piano leads, pumping beats, and the singer-songwriter’s honeyed melodies slowly cascading over them. However, the theme of her latest single “High” goes beyond the standard, it digs a bit deeper, tackling a subject that is scarcely discussed in the youth’s pro-recreational mildew: sobriety. Gillian vents, via infectious hooks and exquisite harmonies, frustrations about a partner struggling to remain sober and how that struggle becomes an illness turning love languid, disappointment vivid. The music video for the track, directed by Nolan Knight, captures the exact atmosphere and heartbreak the song so radiates. Gillian is not only a bright beacon of indie-pop and its current influence on the mainstream but also an artist digging deeper, as artists do. Stream the music video for “High” below. – Rene Cobar
Rich Jones “Coffee”
Rich Jones has teamed up with David Ashley to release a new single called "Coffee". This is the third single from Jones since the release of is 2018 album The Shoulder You Lean On.
PREMIERE: Tall Juan further explores global sounds on “Irene,” new album out 5.11
The music of Queens-based musician Tall Juan frequently eludes genre-descriptors, ever the joyful amalgamation of sounds contemporary and classic, performed in a manner that’s wholly unique. His new single “Irene” is representative of this wide-breadth of influences; a freak-folk instrumental provides the backbone for a modern interpretation of Caetano Veloso’s 1969 track, wherein Juan Zaballa’s vox leaps and bounds with energy reminiscent of his previous garage-rock efforts, albeit this time decidedly more acoustic. Such an approach is demonstrative of Zaballa’s ethos for his forthcoming LP Atlantico, a collage of differing sounds and languages that ultimately pays tribute to the influence of African music in South America. Give it a listen below, ahead of Atlantico’s release next week on May 11th. Photo by Matthew James-Wilson
Jack Symes looks to the heavens in new video “Cool God”
If there were ever a time to question the wholly unjust nature of our universe, it would be the last two months — thankfully, New York songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jack Symes provides a pleasant downtempo indie meditation on the unfairness of our current pandemic via new video “Cool God.” Over mellow muted chords and easygoing percussion, Symes’ nasally vox questions the decision-making process of our Creator, asking at the track’s beginning, “do you ever look down below at your children in sorrow, and think ‘what have you done?’” Symes continues to parse recommendations to the Great I Am, including but not limited to having a smoke and sharing a “cold one” with the various angels and saints. It’s through this irreverent narration that Symes hits on a note many of us our likely thinking — something to the extent of “Jesus Christ, could we get a break for once?” — albeit communicated in laid-back manner that may provide a necessary, chill reprieve from the hyper-seriousness of the present. Watch it below.
ONO “Red Summer”
The latest album from Experimental Gospel Noise Band ONO, Red Summer, is out today, May 1st, via American Dreams.
The album tackles the heavy subjects of race and violence, and looks at current tensions, the violence of the "Red Summer" of 1919, and the origins of it all way back in 1619. This album is not intended to be a full history lesson, but a starting point to prompt the listener to dig deeper into America’s shameful history.
The album’s second single is called "Tar Baby" and can be streamed below.
