Foxtales Impresses with single “Save ya”

Posted on:

Foxtales released a new single “Save Ya” this past Friday. Songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Jonathan Fox, wrote the song while he was making sense of a broken heart. Given that Fox is naturally drawn towards a more upbeat style, “Save Ya” is full of glossy pop melodies interwoven with heavier lyrics dealing with the guilt and grief that comes after a difficult breakup.

The song captures how difficult it can be to process the end of a relationship. When discussing his creative process in writing “Save Ya,” Fox explained “The more I recognized the creative walls I’d put up, and looked to move past them, the less obstructed the story itself seemed to be in getting out. And then it started flowing out." The lyrics have a natural progression as they follow the song’s narrative, and the simple but impactful rhyme scheme flows easily alongside the beat.

The sadder lyrics don’t weigh down the songs uplifting soundscape. Fox bandages his heartbreak with layers of synth and dance music. It’s encouraging to listen to. Fox especially shines on the indie-pop inspired backdrop. The fast-paced layering of electropop loops and subtle bass drops make you want to dance. It’s the sort of song that’s gratifying to listen to when you need a pick-me-up.

WIVES’ “Hit Me Up” is disorienting beauty, play Rough Trade 10/3

Posted on:

“Hit Me Up,” the most recent single by Queens based post-punk outfit WIVES, luridly stumbles into the spotlight at full force; its phosphorescent riffs and glammy vox (by vocalist/guitarist Jay Beach) are rife with a swaggering, confident showmanship that belies it’s status as a single from the band’s upcoming debut So Removed. Better yet is how WIVES are able to seamlessly transition from discordant, strung-out fuzz to a harmonious crescendo on the track’s chorus, in which shimmering, pedal-heavy guitar lines collide with massive percussive builds. It’s a disorienting-ly beautiful track that sets a high standard for the rest of the record, which drops October 4th via City Slang. Until then, stream it below, and catch WIVES at Rough Trade on October 3rd. -Connor Beckett McInerney

Tyler Coyne debuts lively single “What’s Yours & What’s Mine”

Boston’s Tyler Coyne offers listeners a refreshing brand of pop music that is frothy with funky guitars, electronic embellishments, and Coyne’s country-cordial vocals. In the singer-songwriter’s latest single "What’s Yours & What’s Mine" these elements are put on full display and blend for an upbeat track that is bound to stay with you. Coyne’s style embraces current mainstream pop trends while challenging them at the same time: the New England native offers pop music that is embroidered with electronic elements but still keeps folk/country as its main fabric. Daisy the Great ends US tour, releases single “I’m Fine”

Posted on:

After releasing their full-length album “I’m Not Getting Any Taller” at the beginning of this year, Brooklyn’s Daisy the Great spent time taking that material out on the road. Having just completed a tour through the midwest and southern states, the artist made a new single “I’m Fine” available. The song (streaming below) serves up a slice of whimsy via Kelley Nicole Dugan and Mina Walker’s ethereal dual-harmony, in perfect folk-pop style. With a bubbly bass guitar establishing a catchy progression, bouncy percussions and electric-piano provide the sparse instrumentation for a lively word-play about the need to occasionally just let it be. Playfully rhyming the words “hello,” “yellow,” jello,” and caramello” exemplifies the impish, good-natured approach to an overall feeling of ennui: “I’m fine I’m fine – Just let me lie sometimes.” Lyrics about boredom notwithstanding, the vocal delivery and overall mood is light and airy, placing emphasis on the obvious chemistry these two singers share. The track is now available via all the streaming services. – Dave Cromwell

New Night Sins Album Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Portrait in Silver is the new album from Night Sins, a.k.a. Kyle Kimball (of Nothing), and is available via Louisville, KY’s Funeral Party. The album was produced, mixed and mastered by Nick Bassett (Whirr/Nothing). The recordings stealthily stride through the darkness in a ghostly, synth-forward manner, admittedly more akin to Depeche Mode’s Violator than The Sisters of Mercy’s Floodland. Night Sins will be bringing the retro dance party into the shadows this evening at Johnny Brenda’s, with support from Carnivorous Bells, Forever Chasing Honey Bees, and Drowse.
