New Track: “Breathe Out” – Curtis Cooper

Posted on:

Philly’s own Curtis Cooper has a new album coming out on June 3, titled Graceful, and you can now listen to its lead single, "Breathe Out," below. The song lyrically depicts how tension and anxiety tend to build and weigh us down. That compounding effect is countered by the bright, jangly guitar and percussive patterns. Then, the warm, vocal harmony relieves in an airy, uplifting manner as the recording opens up. That ability to create complex, vivid imagery and sound, while retaining a personal connection easily grabs one’s attention and makes Cooper’s next release something to look forward to.

Le Butcherettes and L7 Bring Feminine Power to Mohawk

Posted on:

As ritual chants broke over the crowd’s heads, a throng of people were mesmerized by the presence of the incendiary individuals on stage. Le Butcherettes, lead by Teri Gender Bender, start to play and people begin to fidget with anxiety in anticipation of dancing. Careless poetic verses float through the audience as the band exemplifies their true expression through body movements, equally magnetizing as hypnotic. Many fans waved their phones in the air for instagram stories and social media photos while many others stood stupified by their brilliance.

L7 didn’t let up the torrent of force as they purveyed aggressive riffs that demanded movement and headbanging from listeners. People from the Austin music scene blended with white-collar dads in a pseudo-moshpit which served as a testament to the strength of the relatability of L7’s music. Nostalgia and blissful enjoyment spread around the venue like a virus, giving a sense of enjoyment and well-being to everyone present.

Little Slugger’s “You’re on Your Own” is an American roadtrip

Posted on:

Brooklyn-by-way-of-Burlington’s Little Slugger exists at the intersection of indie rock, rockabilly, and surf rock, creating music from a DIY show in Westworld. Their recent single “You’re on Your Own,” the debut track from forthcoming LP I Want To Live Here Forever, is full of unexpected musical twists, from the introduction of vocalist Sam Bevet’s drawling, baritone vocals, to a metamorphosis from high gain synths to jangling guitars, to a sliding, Surfaris-inspired shredding breakdown. And while the listenability of “You’re on Your Own” derives in part from this unpredictability, these varied instrumental components coalesce over the track’s nearly four minute run time to create Americana that’s weird in the best way, the sonic equivalent of the Further bus chugging down Interstate 80 and incorporating all Statesian influences it happens upon along the way. Hop aboard, and stream the single below. Connor Beckett McInerney, Photo by Meera Jagroop

New Music Video: “Body Says” – Void Vision

Posted on:

A new video for Void Vision‘s "Body Says" has arrived. The lead single, featured on Shari Vari’s forthcoming album The Other, is due out later this year via Mannequin Records. Directed by Hanna Hamilton & Floor Eleven, a quartet of white-coated, vampire-esque individuals are onlookers to a bit of tantalizing entertainment. A hypnotic, danceable darkness consumes as a whole lotta freakiness falls under the spell of the music.

"A claustrophobic ode to physical and mental confines. Dark voguing, undulating bodies, DIY surgery and the increasing sensory stimulation compels the demonic watchers to become ravenous and bloodthirsty."

The Weird Years offer a new brand of folk music with their self-titled EP

Posted on:

The few tracks that have been released by the newly formed Brooklyn quartet The Weird Years showcase a unique hybrid of folk music. Employing slowly strummed guitars and vocal harmonies, the group initially shroud their sound with simplicity, dwelling on themes revolving around the march of time and the paradoxical feelings that come with being alone. It’s only after prolonged listening that their DNA unravels, revealing a double helix that equally relishes in a slow-burning ambiance. It’s an arresting combination which makes their EP deserving to be unpacked patiently. -Tucker Pennington

Akinyemi pays tribute to the past, embraces the future, performs at Elsewhere 05.25

Posted on:

The elegant hip-hop beats that dominated the tracks of 50 Cent’s 2003 breakout album Get Rich or Die Tryin’ feel like a relic of olden days. The splendor of those beats was in their concentration of funky bass lines, R&B buffs, and kickdrums that popped alongside the velvety verses that laid on the track. It is the smoothly-layered words of NYC’s Akinyemi—alongside his tribute to those beats—that make the artist a standout in the current crowded hip hop market. In his song "Fleece" (streaming) the young MC suggests protection from the elements: he references the frigidness of greed, the heat of competition, the winds of change. Akinyemi says, "the weather isn’t bigger," and the more you listen to his track, the more you feel inclined to believe him. The Queens Village rapper is ready to bring his message to Zone One, Elsewhere on May 25th, loud and clear. – Rene Cobar

A Deli Premiere: Red Steppes’ “Madera” & June 7th Show

Posted on:

Noise Pop nailed another solid show next month at Cafe du Nord. A power trio of a line up: Red Steppes, Sis, and Range of Light Wilderness. Red Steppes presents a surreal folk with vocal stylings like a less high-pitched Joni Mitchell infused with just the right touch of gentle keys and synths (god bless you, Native Cat, another gem). To be quite frank, it’s beautiful. We’re proud to premier the video for “Madera” here. Stay tuned for much more on Sis and Range of Light Wilderness. – Michelle Kicherer, Associate Editor

New Track: “Like Medicine” – Mickey Cake

The quartet of Mickey Cake recently shared a new single, “Like Medicine,” via Bandit Susan Record Label. The song is rather comforting composition with its casual, strolling pace. The vocals provide a serene effect, while also making a plea/request. What you find is a sweet, little ditty to help cure your mid-week blues. Mickey Cake will be holding an in-store performance this Saturday, May 18 at Main Street Music.
