Safari Room have pounded the musical pavement throughout 2019, releasing singles and live sessions, playing shows throughout the city, and working on new material. In June, they plan to trek through the Midwest to perform a handful of shows. But for now, Safari Room will stay in Nashville to play The Basement on May 31st. Hari the Band joins the bill; they too have kept busy throughout the year, planning to release an EP in June. Stay tuned for news about that. New Son Step LP Available for Streaming & Purchase
Son Step‘s new LP, Fossilillies, recently dropped via Grind Select. A dichotomy of calculated and free-flow, synth-soaked instrumentation converges, allowing the well-honed vocals to flourish. Within a psych-pop vessel, one is engaged on a journey of personal discovery, which retains a bright, backend buoyancy, while exploring place & purpose. Indie rockers Mars Motel debut single from upcoming LP, play Pianos 05.30
Mars Motel blends vibrant indie-rock guitar riffs with the ambient atmospheres of dream pop to create a sound that is both edgy and emotional, light and heavy, dangerously infectious, and ultimately fun. The choruses of the group’s latest single “Coming Up For Air” are super-charged with energy and show off the band’s late ‘90s and early ‘00s influences. The poise and intensity of the group’s music feels like a crossover between The Verve and Young the Giant, classy and perfectly suited for festivals. The band will be releasing its debut album Passenger X later this year and has a scheduled performance at Pianos on May 30th. Check out the single is streaming below. – Rene Cobar
NE-HI “XYZ”
NE-Hi dropped a new EP called “XYZ" earlier this month. This is the anthemic indie rock of Jason Balla, Alex Otake, James Weir, and Mikey Wells.
The EP’s opening tracks “Exit Stations” is the perfect example how the band can create soaring, stadium ready, rock while keeping it grounded and garage or basement ready.
The Cerny Brothers play 3rd & Linsley on 05.26 to support new LP
At the beginning of May, Robert and Scott Cerny — who play music as The Cerny Brothers — released their newest LP Looking For The Good Land, a disc full of heartland rock that will strike the heartstrings of any Springsteen, Tom Petty, or Neil Young fan. Their music video for "American Whore" even pays a bit of tribute to Springsteen’s "Born In The U.S.A."; the critical lyrics and driving refrain, along with the American flag backdrop, help pay into the likeness. The Cerny Brothers will take the stage at 3rd & Linsley on May 26th for a special Memorial Day weekend performance; it’s part of a series of dates in support of Looking For The Good Land. Take a listen to "American Whore" below. – Will Sisskind
Electro-pop trio Obil debut with engaging single “Your Name”
By the time you hear the vocals of Obil frontman Miguel Martinez in the band’s debut single “Your Name” (streaming), you have already been engulfed by the track’s sonic atmosphere. Faint electric guitar notes flutter around in a whirlwind of synth parts, all to the rhythm of an exquisitely groovy drum beat. The bass on the track seems to melt in the ears of the listener as the song progresses. Martinez’s smooth vocals resemble those of Kings of Convenience lead singer Erlend Øye, both sharing an alluring composure. The group has released the single just in time for the summer, a catchy song that signals good things to come from the band. – Rene Cobar

New Cocordion LP Available for Streaming & Purchase
Tv.Ant.Race, the new album from the trio Cocordion, is out now via Tigarita Tapes. A tranquil sea of sound is injected with snippets of noise. The album hovers between a peaceful, pensive state and points of friction. The majority of the LP flows in a smooth cruising nature; however, moments of discord shakeup the system.

Fence offers listeners a rich slacker punk in latest split EP (with Aqui)
The music of New Jersey’s Fence is the sonic equivalent to a perfectly cooked medium-rare steak: it is seasoned enough to have an intense flavor to it and raw enough to feel tender. The soft plucking of guitar strings that open up their track “Quidditch” (streaming, from their 2018 split EP with Aqui) doesn’t prepare you for the punk beat-driven feast of screaming solos and vocals that dominate the song. Still, the surprises are welcome, and the feeling of comradery in the harmonies and well-arranged instrumentation underscore the passion that seeps through the band’s music. Fence has been covering the music of Neutral Milk Hotel as of late, and their take on it in their new EP is worth a listen for fans of the psych-folk group. Check out "Quidditch" below. – Rene Cobar
