Five Industrial Acts Bringing the Pain to SXSW 2019

Posted on:

Traffic, big brands and more Californians tend to give Austin locals a negative conception of SXSW, but for music lovers it is a smorgasboard of new bands and under-appreciated genres that are suddenly thrust into tangibility. While Austin has a handful of industrial bands, SXSW 2019 is offering a plethora of global options to choose from, and if gritty gothtronica is your bag, you need to check out these five acts below. The Negative Gain showcase on March 16 at Valhalla on 710 Red River St will be a cornucopia of industrial talent worth investigating as well.

 DSTR (GER)

East-German electronic project DSTR has an all new line up with three veterans of the German electronic music scene. They are back to infuse a fresh new sound straight from the heart of post-Soviet Germany.

Odonis Odonis (CAN)

Odonis Odonis has continued to push their sound further into the depths of post-apocalyptic experimentation. The band is on their fourth LP and venturing into a starker and more dance-floor friendly space.

Gallops (UK)

Gallops has been revitalised, rejuvenated and driven to create music that has stretched their horizons, and is driven by the propulsive charge of electronic music.

Grun Wasser (Chicago)

The music of Grun Wasser is inspired by the juxtaposition of beauty and tragedy in the world. They stands in solidarity with all people who have been disenfranchised by the negligent powers of society.

Goo Monday (AUS)

Goo Munday is a music producer and performer from Sydney Australia. Her music is a hypnotising mix of dark electronic beats, jolting screams and ethereal vocals.

Five Promising Houston Rappers at SXSW 2019

Posted on:

The golden age of Houston rap (Geto Boys, Swishahouse, Screwed Up Click) may be a distant memory, despite some continuing to rep the city (Z-Ro, Paul Wall, Devin the Dude etc), yet there is a new generation (not talking about Travis Scott) that is rising to carry the torch and hold down ‘Screwston’ as a hub of quality rap. Luckily, 160 miles West from H-Town, is the largest music festival in the world, so it’s only right that SXSW gets a glimpse of the next class of powerhouse rappers emerging from the ‘City of Syrup’. Here are five up-and-comer acts that are looking to impress at SXSW 2019.

Megan Thee Stallion

The newly crowned queen of Houston rap, Megan Thee Stallion aka Tina Snow, has incisive lyrics that are as clever as they are provocative. Young, ambitious and undeniably talented, Megan is giving Austin once last glance before she takes over the world.

Tim Woods

Poet, MC, flower-child, or hippy, Tim Woods has gone by a multitude of names. That alone should speak volumes about his versatility and creativity.

Doughbeezy

Doughbeezy a.k.a The South East Beast has been exciting crowds and gaining fans since high school where he got his start doing impromptu concerts at the lunch table. Since recording his first song in 2003 Doughbeezy has continued to progress as a recording artist, live performer, and a successful brand.

Rizzoo Rizzoo

When it comes the infrastructure of the modern Houston sound, The Sauce Factory has played a pivotal part into the way the rest of the nation looks at Texas’ emerging soundscape. One of the X Factors in the collective that has been gaining steam is Rizzoo Rizzoo.

Doeman

Born and raised in Southeast Houston, Doeman’s flows are largely about his experiences as a Mexican-American man. It is no surprise, then, that his lyrics focus less on typical hip-hop subjects such as women and material possessions, and focus more on social statements and current events.

Brion Starr reimagines New York on upcoming LP “Global Identity, 03.21

Posted on:

New York City is a paradoxical place. With familiar landmarks vanishing on the daily, many of the things we conjure when we think about the city are in fact no longer there. This is the city that native Brion Starr inhabits, and his music reflects the disaffected feeling of watching the place you love become unrecognizable before your very eyes. What’s particularly fascinating about Starr’s music is that it draws a lot of influence from one particular New York legend: the underground glam rock scene of the 1970s. The sparkling cacophony of his experimental brand of vintage rock leans more toward Brian Eno than David Bowie, and while watching him perform in sequin jumpsuits its hard not to imagine what those who shaped New York’s past might think of the city today. Perhaps that’s the very question Starr wants us to answer. Wrapping up a tour with The Chills, Starr plans to release his LP Global Identity on March 21st – while you wait, check out “Oh Please”, the first single off the album, below. – Sunny Betz

Weekend Warrior, March 8 – 10

Posted on:

A residue of fuzz hangs in the air as one listens to Loose Tooth; the band toys with tempo, creating a low-key tone with the ability to flip the switch and race downhill at any moment, demolishing whatever lies in its way. There’s a reflective, emotive element, merged with an uncompromising, smashing grunge approach. It retains the heaviness of walking out into a storm, and then finds the temporary reprieve of shelter, taking another surprising turn into crisp, melodic, almost gentle-swaying rock. Then surges forward yet again. The group keeps you on their toes as the musical forecast continuously shifts, exhibiting a fun ferocity. Tonight at Kung Fu Necktie, they’ll be joined by the heady haze of So Totally, the exuberant, infectious, pop-punk pairing of Mike Bell & The Lame-O’s, and the anthemic emo of Ohio’s Maybe Later to round out the lineup into full form. – Michael Colavita

Leikeli47 brings distinctive hip hop sound to SXSW, 03.13

Posted on:

In an industry dominated by big personalities, it takes a lot for a hip hop artists to stand out. Brooklyn based rapper Leikeli47 has taken on this challenge, ironically, by disguising herself behind a mask – one she dons in interviews and during shows, and is rarely seen without. However, you shouldn’t take the mask as a clue of her being shy, since on her latest album Acrylic she proves she is anything but. Her flow is playful and brash, and on tracks like “Tic Boom” and “Girl Blunt” she experiments with unconventional vocal intonation and rhythm in her takedowns of those who might doubt her individuality and self assurance. Leikeli47 is just one of many talented artists who will be playing this year’s SXSW festival – you can catch her set on March 13th at the Hip Hop/Rap Showcase, and stream Acrylic below. -Sunny Betz

New Track: “Free Around You” – The Dove & The Wolf

Posted on:

“Free Around You” is the latest single from The Dove & The Wolf, and it captures a dreamy intimacy of a meeting. The beauty of vocal harmony takes a somewhat dramatic turn as the hard thump of percussion and horn fills the distance. A natural sense of familiarity allows you to drop your guard and embrace the moment. It’s a graceful, loving admission. Conversations, the duo’s forthcoming full-length debut is slated for release on May 3. (Photo by Marcus Maddox)

A Deli Premiere: New single “Breed” off Waterstrider’s new EP

Posted on:

After a year of tribulations, Nate Salman of Waterstrider, poured heavy energies into his newest EP, The Way Out, on 30th Century Records. The result is a warlockian, mesmerizing blend of songs that have the surreal quality of our beloved Enya but with a Julien Ehrlich falsetto and dark, poppy synths. The single “Breed” is melancholy but hopeful. Lines like “Farewell to secrets/I’ll never keep them” are sung with a pure earnestness and are serenaded by keys with an airy, forestlike quality. This experimental, futuristic collection brings Waterstrider into a new realm. –Michelle Kicherer, Associate Editor
