New Track: “Give Me Something” – Scantron

Posted on:

A new single, “Make It With You,” has arrived from Scantron, but let’s talk about the flip side. “Give Me Something” has that sweaty riff-fueled buzz. The stomp of the rhythm mingles with the vocals in a cool, catchy manner, injecting a bit of hand clapping for good measure, before hitting overdrive with an infectious snarl. You can catch the band as part the TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb Halloween Murdershow IX, which also includes Sixteen Jackies, this Saturday, October 27 at Underground Arts.

A Deli Premiere: Andrew DiMarzo Trio play “Our Fence” live

Frequenters of the Lilypad in Inman Square, Cambridge are likely to recognize the Boston-based Andrew DiMarzo Trio, who played their ForeverGrow EP release show at the venue back in February. The trio, made up of core members Andrew DiMarzo, Steven Viol, and Herman Ramanado, take a classic soul vocal arrangement and infuse it with a rock-inspired twist to create music that absolutely must be seen played live. Keep an eye out for more Boston-area show announcements from the Andrew DiMarzo Trio, but until then, mark January 13 in your calendar for a show at O’Brien’s Pub that you wouldn’t want to miss.

Suzie True unveil video for “Rat Kid,” new EP out 10/26

Posted on:

Suzie True make ennui look good on "Rat Kid." On the music video for their latest single, lead songwriter Lexi Mccoy prances around with delightful aimlessness inside one of those ghostly, half-empty shopping malls that seem like they’ll exist forever. She lip syncs with gusto over a sweet hook, backed by a hooky earworm that is informed by both sixties Brill Building pop and garage rock fuzz. It’s a sad, yet heartfelt ballad that will leave you humming for days.

"Rat Kid" is featured on Suzie True’s forthcoming EP, Nothing to You, which comes out tomorrow, October 26 via Buzz Records. Juan Rodríguez

New Video: An Allston Pudding Session – AllegrA

Posted on:

Filmed by Matt Hamer, an Allston Pudding Session, featuring AllegrA, was recently posted. Over the course of three new songs, “Spoon or Fork,” “Subtle Ignition,” and “Twisting Of,” the quartet exhibits an intimate vulnerability, with the knack to hit a somewhat volatile, downhill trajectory. Forging a zoomed-in familiarity and then shifting the dynamics, the songs build up the emotive pressure, before releasing it to the ether.

New London Fire invoke the American Folk Tradition on Tired of This Man

Posted on:

New London Fire’s forthcoming record Tired of This Man may at first seem rooted within the zeitgeist of contemporary indie folk, but a closer listening reveals the group’s spiritual connection to the more overtly political Americana of the early 20th Century. “I hope people feel the same kind of kinship with [our] music that they once did with Phil Ochs or Woody Guthrie,” remarks band leader David Debiak (of Sleep Station and Electric Century). “We want to remind people of the importance of unions, of sticking together in protest.”

This connection is most apparent on tracks like “Now I’m Found,” in which Debiak sings about “gazing upon green and sprawling mountains” with nods to Guthrie’s “This Land Is Your Land.” In doing so, Tired of This Man seeks to revive a grounded sense of Americanism, one not bolstered by blind exceptionalism but instead a celebration of America as a sum of its many different and diverse parts, often employing Debiak’s own experiences as testament – contextualized in our current political climate, New London Fire offers a sharp rebuke while invoking the peace loving nature of the American folk tradition.

A Deer A Horse’s “Double Wide” is a testament to emotional endurance

Posted on:

Brooklyn sludge trio A Deer A Horse let listeners read between the lines on their new single, “Double Wide” (streaming). The track is a heavy-leaded five minute foray into a scene with sparse details, yet every meticulously-chosen word creates an atmosphere of oncoming dread, each detail growled by vocalist and bassist Angela Phillips a Chekhovian set piece of extreme importance.

The elements described by Phillips on “Double Wide” – a knot, a shut door, the experience of meeting god – they all compose a tableau of possible final thoughts by a family member of Phillips, who several years ago took his own life. The bleak realness of the track is difficult to confront as a listener, but according to Phillips, the process of writing and performing “Double Wide” allows her relative’s passing to make “more sense, and it becomes a little easier to heal.” A trial by fire of emotional endurance and survival, “Double Wide” is a difficult track to consume, but the raw truth that informs its inception makes it necessary, important listening. –Connor Beckett McInerney (@b_ck_tt), Photo by Kirsten Theon (@daggers_for_eyes)

Eva B. Ross releases sultry new single “Nick’s House”

Posted on:

Bleeding all the colors of jazz is Eva B. Rose, an enriching combination of Sara Barielles and Amy Winehouse. Rose’s new single, “Nick’s House,”  is a sizzling bombshell that will have you believe you are listening to a refurbished rendition of a 1945 jazz singer. The warm, seductive voice of Rose is, first and foremost, raw talent, but was also shaped at the Interlochen Arts and the Standford Jazz Vocal Residency. Along with studying poetry, Rose won an award at UCLA’s Spring Sing for her performance of an original ensemble called “Chicago.”

With honey dripping from her lips as she sings, the deep, sultry sound of “Nick’s House” will make even the strongest of men melt. Kayla Hay

Gracie & the Valley release new singles in November ahead of LP

Posted on:

Gracie & The Valley have a sound like Sara Bareilles; light but cinematic, carefree while holding back a constant dread that threatens to bleed through the sheet music. Their latest single "Serotonin" speaks of chasing dreams and getting lost in the process; their upcoming tracks, which come from their soon-to-come LP Chrysanthemum, dabble in subjects just as heartwrenching. "Doorbell Dixie", which drops 11.02, speaks of nostalgic and unrequited love; "Did I Stutter", which follows on 11.09, chronicles an argument which showcases the vulnerability of love. Chrysanthemum releases on 11.16; Gracie & The Valley will mark the new LP with a show at The Basement. Take another listen to "Serotonin" below. – Will Sisskind

Thanks Light releases new stop-motion music video, “Little Pink Fluffy Clouds”

Posted on:

Austin’s Thanks Light has released a charming new music video for "Little Pink Fluffy Clouds." It’s a colorful and creative compliment to the song’s jangly, indie-rock vibe, with chord structures and tones reminiscent of bands like Wilco, Why? and Pavement. The video is entirely composed of DIY stop-motion animation: figurines and shaving cream dance and swirl around the screen, while fridge-magnet letters and Lite-Brite spell out the song’s lyrics. It’s clear the indie quartet had fun with the video, and the fun is contagious. Check out the video below! – Ethan Ames

New Track: “Living Statues (Setting sun)” – Luminous Fins

Posted on:

The trio of Luminous Fins recently shared a new single, “Living Statues (Setting sun)”. Beginning with a rhythmic-rumbling march and tunneling vocals, the song naturally propels with a somewhat ominous undertone. Rolling forward under the shade of darkness, a suspense-laced heavy comes to the surface as the instruments are explosively unleashed. Navigating through murky waters, the track latches onto an unrelenting psych-surf sound.

New Track: “Sokc” – Sleepy Sound Dept.

Posted on:

“Sokc,” the latest single from Sleepy Sound Dept., almost immediately thumps in a relaxed groove. Hovering over the narration of a daydream, the song blurs the edges, focusing on the individual perspective. Locked into a low-key, compact, instrumental push, the track is a bright flash of optimism. Press play, and let your imagination wander.
