Spit It Out, the sophomore EP from Alyssa Thomas-led Fairy Godmother, is out today. The album embraces the melancholy of heartbreak, but counters the doldrums with a refreshing, optimistic instrumental backdrop. Exploring feelings with a level sense of clarity allows one to move on. The pain may temporarily weigh you down; there’s a hopeful, resilient breeze that lifts you back up and dusts you off.

Evalyn seeks for redemption in wicked new single “A Pill to Crush”

Posted on:

Exploring a concept as grand as the seven deadly sins may seem like an impossible undertaking. But rather than bottling it up all at once, alluring singer-songwriter Evalyn takes it one pleasurable step at a time. Her third single off of her forthcoming EP, "A Pill to Swallow," considers the sin of wrath over layers upon layers of trancelike, frothy synths and entrancing vocals. She invokes a disorienting spell over a partner who’s been mistreating her good intentions, one that is playful, if ever so slightly nefarious in intent.

Salvation is due out in September 28. Juan Rodríguez

Lindsay Clark: Crystalline

Posted on:

Folk artist Lindsay Clark is releasing a new album, Crystalline, tomorrow September 21st. The album maintains a nice balance between vulnerability and resiliency. Clark’s words are intimate and delicate. Her music is deeply grounded in a strong sense of self that permeates each song. Part of this stems from the religious aspects of her music. Like most folk music, the album deals with questions of faith and spirituality. In Crystalline, these questions are permeated with delightfully vibrant depictions of nature. In “Rosehips” Clark’s calm, steady voice bathes the song in a subtle sensuality. The song invites you to forget yourself within the evocative call of Clarke’s voice, and the vivid portraits she creates. Overall, the album envelops the listener like a warm blanket on a cool fall evening.

Lindsey Clark is playing tonight, September 20th, at the Holocene in honor of her upcoming album. The show will also feature Ezza Rose, Anna Hoone, Jacob Miller, and Malachi Graham.

QWAM bring their heart wrenching punk to El Cortez on 09.28

Posted on:

QWAM, a quartet hailing from New York, call Feed Me, their five-song EP released earlier this year, the first EP they are proud to show their moms – who were probably in their teens when the Sex Pistols’ Never Mind the Bollocks dropped in 1977. Given how good it is, they should be proud to show anybody, even the most cynical of punks out there. At its best, Feed Me is a propulsive ball of rocking energy that will warm your heart before ripping it out. If they are in your area, and they have a show at the El Cortez in Brooklyn on September 28, do yourself a favor and check them out. – Chris Morgan
