The Dreamboats are throwin’ it back to the good ol’ days. The Happy Days perhaps. When life was about root beer floats, writing love letters and selling lemonade (a few of the band’s interests). They put on an old school rock n’ roll show full of dancing and nostalgia. The Dreamboats recently released a music video for the track “Run Away”. As much of a throwback as it is, it still has the volume cranked right up. They will be hosting a special rockabilly night at the Horseshoe Tavern on Saturday September 8th along with The Surfrajettes and The Greasemarks. Don’t forget your brylcreem! – Kris Gies
Last Month Spocket released their first single, “What Was”, in three years. The track, the first from their upcoming EP, is a sprawling blend of jazz and Psych Rock. It features Konstantine Stebily, Carl Kennedy, Pondstar, Alex Blomarz, Josh Torrey, Luke Angle, and Paul Van Altena.
You can catch Spocket on September 28th at Bourbon on Division (2050 W. Division) opening for New Orleans band Papa Grows Funk.
Ethan Helfrich (aka Rest You Sleeping Giant) released a new EP this week called “Leaving Shore”. This project was inspired by an island in Japan called Enoshima, and is beautifully minimal. Ethan created the ambient sounds on this EP by utilizing several pedals, a looper, and a guitar.
“Leaving Shore” follows Ethan most recent LP, Celestial Orchestra, which was released back in April.
Among the tracks on Kissing Is A Crime’s self-titled LP, released by Don Giovani in 2017, “Noise At Night” stands out among the jangly, punk-tinged guitar pop for it’s dark minimalism. The verses are driven by bass and a simple drum beat while lead vocalist Matt Molnar steps back to allow bassist/vocalist Beatrice Rothbaum to take the reins. Kissing Is A Crime’s new video for the single matches the mood of the track perfectly, with director Assal Ghawami providing a dark affair intentionally reminiscent of work by Luis Buñuel and David Lynch. Among the surrealist, frequently black and white imagery Ghawami fits a cameo by Sunflower Bean’s Julia Cumming, who’s been known to join the band from time to time in recordings and live performances. Dear Deli Readers,
This is a big one! We are very excited to announce the lineup for The Deli Philly’s 10th Anniversary Bash on Saturday, October 6th at PhilaMOCA. Yup – that’s right; for nearly a decade now, our branch of The Deli has been proudly exposing you to the wonderful, homegrown talent that has fostered this kick-ass music community of ours. It’s been an honor and a privilege to document this slice of musical history and share it with you, and we hope to continue on this journey with you for many years to come.
Headlining this momentous occasion will be glam quartet Sixteen Jackies, who also recently released our June Record of the Month. If you’ve never experienced them live, you are certainly in for a treat, and if you have, then we’ll see you there. They’ll also be joined by the anthemic songwriting of American Trappist, the brainchild of former River City Extension frontman Joe Michelini. And feel free to submit yourself to the ladies of Madalean Gauze, who will be bringing their naughty brand of post-punk/psych-rock hijinx to the mausoleum’s hallowed halls. Yeah – it’s on. Looking forward to sharing this very special evening with you! More deets about the celebration HERE.
Much love,
Q.D. Tran & The Deli Staff
Buddy Leezle & Vinny Vindetta recently shared a collection of unreleased material, La Casa Azul. Sitting back in the beat, a relaxed, cool and calculated aggression pushes ahead in a smooth, striding manner. Produced by the combination of Sadhugold, Ralphie Reese, Professor 950, and Vindetta, the tag team of talent provides us a new soundtrack for late-night contemplations.
Ivy Dye is preparing to release their latest EP, “Diminish”, on September 21st via 1212 Records. This is the Alt Rock band’s first release since 2016’s LP, Regality.
Ivy Dye is the work of Chris Adams, Bryan Dalle Molle, and Connor Boyle. You can hear the EP’s first single, “Skin You Knees”, below.
Produced by Keith Abrams (of Pine Barons/Tremellow), the self-titled debut album from Stoops has arrived. Refreshing, melodic rock reinforced with infectious harmonies, the recordings ride a steady wave of upbeat energy with an endearing lyrical edge. A loose, gradually-building, anthemic quality resounds as these songs wedge themselves in your mind. You can find the band opening for The Nude Party on Monday, October 1 at Johnny Brenda’s.
A ringing bell beckons Anna St. Louis on "The Bells." We’re never exactly sure what the call entails, or what is about to transpire in Louis’s darkly sinister present, but there’s always the expectation that something crucial, even dangerous, is about to happen. Much like a western score, the Kansas City-bred, Angeles singer-songwriter’s sweet, yet parched vocals describe an expansive, natural setting alongside a thrumming bass line and a heedful fiddle. With the assistance of Kevin Morby and Kyle Thomas of King Tuff, Louis’s calm, moody suite leaves an indelible impact due to its seductive nature.
"The Bells" is the latest single off of Anna St. Louis’s forthcoming LP, If Only There Was a River, which is out on October 12 via Woodsist/Mare Records. She’s playing a hometown album release show at Permanent Records in Highland Park on October 20. – Juan Rodríguez
