Weekend Warrior, September 14 – 16

Posted on:

The freak-folk collective of On the Water whimsically taps into one’s imagination. Ornate, tightly-bound instrumentation and refined harmonies create a nuanced sonic fabric – one that flourishes in its intricate attention to detail and simultaneously remains attached to its guttural, ground-swelling reality. The band accesses personal circumstances, while hedging toward an alternative fantasy. Tonight, On the Water will celebrate the arrival of their latest EP Failing Upwards, with a release show at West Philly’s The Mothership. They’ll also be supported by the tumultuously eerie punk of Northern Liberties, the glam-psych, space invasion of STARWOOD, and the funky dance-punk of Van Goose. – Michael Colavita

Belle Mare announces new EP “Liars” out on 10.19

Posted on:

Ambient pop duo Belle Mare has announced a new EP, Liars, set for release on October 19. In the two charming preview singles, Liars and Spain, members Amelia Bushell and Thomas Servidone unveil a possibly catchier approach to a sound they have been developing since 2013, when their haunting debut EP was named NYC Record of the Month in this very blog. Layering their characteristically dreamy sound with a bouncier tempo, the duo’s new style showcases a bubblier side, while still preserving its ethereal quality. New Mothers LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Render Another Ugly Method is the new album from Georgia transplants Mothers, and is out now via ANTI- Records. Whether subtlety set adrift or racing toward an undeclared destination, the band occupies a semi-chaotic, heady space that follows Kristine Leschper’s vocal lead. There’s an unpredictability to the release, as the band shifts between a chilly serenity and frenetic flashes of energy. Supported by Mega Bog, Mothers will be headlining Johnny Brenda’s on Saturday, November 3.

Detective Logan’s electro-pop is full of surprises + live at Berlin on 09.19

Posted on:

Detective Logan’s stylish synth-pop glides along at an innocuous pace, begging for comparisons to be made about similar artists that could be found on DFA. But it’s through this play on pastiche retro sounds where “Cool People” begins to warp the upbeat dance motifs and the subtly dark undertones begin to creep through. Mechanical synths lock into place over a stomping rhythm that would most likely crush a dance floor as the hook shrilly proclaims “I can feel there’s something strange” and “lonely hearts don’t break,” in a tone that sounds like its crystallizing the words the moment they’re sung. You can catch Detective Logan premiere “Cool People” at Berlin on September 19 and stream the single’s video below. –Tucker Pennington

New Track: “Ain’t Sh*t” – Bri Steves

Posted on:

As we await the debut album from Bri Steves, which is due out via Atlantic Records, her latest single “Ain’t Sh*t,” produced by BNYX stokes the fire. Suspenseful keys merge into a heavy, bass-forward beat, meshing with the rising artist’s confident, aggressive delivery. Unwavering while holding her ground, the local emcee easily separates herself from the pack. Steves is slated to appear at Wells Fargo Center on Friday, October 26, as part of Powerhouse 2018.

New single and basketball-filled video for “Wrong” from pronoun

Posted on:

The streak of singles from pronoun — the solo indie pop project of Alyse Vellturo — continues with "wrong", a track with a catchy riff and a lyric addressing loneliness and ended relationships. Along with the new song comes a video of Vellturo playing basketball against a team of suit-and-tie clad drones, all of whom eventually become her teammates dressed in pink. Those drones — played by her fellow artists on the Sleep Well label such as Cape Francis, Charles Fauna, and Sulene — symbolize Vellturo turning her feelings from lonely to positive and self-affirming through the power of fun and freedom. Watch the video for "wrong" below. – Will Sisskind

Good Witch want to liberate themselves on “Shake You Loose”

Posted on:

Good Witch just want to have some fun, unbound to any constraints, on "Shake You Loose." The garage rock duo of Rose Shawhan and Raymond Richards’s latest single is about avoiding responsibility, to admit to yourself that sometimes it’s okay to do things that may seem a little dangerous. Bolstered with a prominent bass throb, Shawan bellows with a fiery passion, but not without also considering the track’s stomping thrust. It’s a simple, yet distinctive rock song which hits more forcefully with each repeated listen.

"Shake You Loose" is the first single off of Good Witch’s forthcoming EP, Double Life, which comes out on November 2. – Juan Rodríguez
