New Nothing LP Available for Streaming & Announce Record Release Block Party

Posted on:

Ahead of its August 24 release date, Dance On The Blacktop (Relapse Records) the new album  from Nothing is available for streaming via NPR’s First Listen. The searing-soothing dichotomy the shoegazers channels the tug and pull between the hope that we can turn it around and the dreariness that we witnesses daily. One can brace for the bleakness of  the storm, and remember that the potential of positivity lies in its aftermath. On Saturday, August 25, a day of music, fun and food for all ages will be had , with a rad record release block party that will be taking place at the blocks of Livingston and E. Lehigh in Port Richmond. This serves as a precursor to Belly Of The Beats – a fundraiser for The Pennsylvania Prison Society, presented by WXPN and R5 Productions on Saturday, October 6 at Union Transfer, which also includes Swirlies, Big Bite, and Smut.

BIRDS bring their psych rock to Sunnyvale on 10.03

Posted on:

What exactly do BIRDS mean when they title their album Everything All At Once? It could be considered a one-size-fits-all genre tag, a wide net to summarize all their influences without using the nondescript term “indie”. However, we’d rather think of it as a means of describing what they offer on each song; there’s no token emotional song or designated hit single. Instead, the band opt to craft every song with psychedelic breeziness that merges with subtle earnestness in a way that these songs could fit either a summer or winter playlist without feeling out of place. BIRDS’ brand of weirdo psych-pop is reminiscent of what the Elephant 6 collective were doing in the 90’s, but their focus on more subdued songwriting allow for each song to expand in meaning and depth in a naturalistic and enthralling way. You can stream their music below and catch them playing live at Sunnyvale on October 3. –Tucker Pennington

“No More Dancing” is a sweetly melancholic Americana tune by Five Islands

Posted on:

"No more dancing in the evening / you are free, no longer mine" is one of many bittersweet images in Five Islands’ new single "No More Dancing." A fiddle skillfully weaves in between lyrics like a third singer or a memory, threading the different sections of the song together. The whole thing makes you wanna sit back, reminisce and let out a little sigh. Be sure to catch Five Islands when they play the Local on 8/19. -Geena Kloeppel

Debut Bodyguard EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Power Animal bandmates Megan Gouda and Matt Hampson further their creative collaboration as Bodyguard. The duo’s debut EP, Allow Yourself The Frame, merges electro-r&b in a crisp, futuristic-leaning manner. Vocals sync in serene unity, and at other points, offset in staggered directions, creating a theatrical dynamic. Ethereal harmonies, which hone in on specific points, are countered by the adventurous, beat-driven leaps, landing in unexplored territory.

New Track: “Big Crime” (Madam Data Remix) – Moor Mother x Mental Jewelry

Posted on:

“Big Crime,” the closing song from Moor Mother x Mental Jewelry‘s EP Crime Waves, has been remixed by fellow Philly sound sculptor Madam Data. The solemn, foreboding tone is enhanced by the rapid-fire, glitchy noise elements. The clarity of Moor Mother’s vocals plays off the electronic shards/threads that fray the edges, adding a sense of uncertainty, as if caught in the moment. You can find Madam Data this Friday, August 17 on an All Mutable showcase at the Tundra Dome that also includes Embarker, Garvin Kelly, and Cleo Miao x Trngs.

Gold Star share effusive new single “Dani’s in Love”

Posted on:

Marlon Rabenreither is in love. It’s a simple, yet powerful feeling that motivates the singer-songwriter who goes by the moniker Gold Star. A heartfelt tribute to his girlfriend, who helped him during a period of personal strife, the driving power-pop track cruises by with a heartland rock sound. Rabenreither’s gushy reverence is contagious, and he proves that there’s nothing wrong with laying your heart bare with such purity and soul.

"Dani’s in Love" is the first single off of Gold Star’s forthcoming LP, Uppers and Downers, which comes out on September 7 via Autumn Tone Records. Juan Rodríguez

Lush Buffalo – Grunge Destruction in “Munson” Music Video

Posted on:

Toronto grungers Lush Buffalo released a brand new music video earlier this summer for their latest single “Munson”. This track is catchy and leans more towards the alt-rock side of their grunge sound. They’re just lightly accepting a little pop punk influence which is cool and helps add a bit of an extra earworm. They cause serious destruction in this video and you can witness similar distruction live at Monarch Tavern on August 22nd when Lush Buffalo performs with The Take, Day Trip and Blue Dream. – Kris Gies

Native Sun talk about Pedals on Delicious Audio + play El Cortez on 08.16

Posted on:

Brooklyn Native Sun‘s fast paced and heavy handed mix of garage and psych rock has earned a space in the soundtrack to our summer 2018 trips. Their recent EP "Songs Born from Love and Hate" features many flavors of fuzzed-out guitars, so we thought it might be interesting to ask the band a few questions about their pedals and  gear – check out the link below, and see them live at NYC’s El Cortez on August 16.
