Edan Archer hits a tattoo parlor in new music video “Bad Imitation Of Something Good”

Posted on:

Folks- you’re in for a wild ride in Edan Archer’s new music video, "Bad Imitation Of Something Good." The song is a light-hearted folk/rock song with crunchy guitar riffs and a double-clap drum rhythm, but it’s the video that really shines. Though filmed entirely on an iPhone, according to the press release, this visual is far more stunning than you might imagine. Archer hits a diner, an arcade and a tattoo parlor (don’t worry, all the tattoos in the video are temporary). "You want a good woman by your side / who puts her toothpaste cap on tight" sings Archer in the chorus, and honestly, it makes me want to hit the town with her even more. Edan Archer plays the Rhinestone Cabaret on 8/28. -Geena Kloeppel

Weekend Warrior, August 17 – 19

Hardcore and noise converge in the music of Great Weights. The band’s self-titled EP is jarring – a raw release of inhibited emotion. There’s a heaviness that pushes back in agitated expression. That ability to expose personal vulnerability and make it work as a source of strength creates a powerful universal dynamic. The stakes are high as unimpeded observations and analysis are on full display, as the music stews in calm yet formidable swells, or blitzes ahead with an uncontainable tenacity.  This Saturday, the band represents part of the slate, which also includes Soul GloDemodex , and Rainbow Crimes [a new project from Leah Basarab (Ex. By. V.), Alex Smith (Solarized), Katy Otto (Callowhill, Trophy Wife)] at Children’s Community School of West Philadelphia, which will be host The Trans Equity Project Fund-rager. The Trans Equity Project offers peer-based support for trans individuals, sexual health and HIV prevention counseling, mentorship with transitioning, legal advocacy, and much more. It’s a rager for a good cause so come join! – Michael Colavita

The Marías share video for new single “Cariño,” new EP due out in September

Posted on:

Let The Marías seduce you with their latest single, "Cariño." On the video for the track, the indie-pop quintet wanders in a frolicking manner with the same improvisational flair of a classic French New Wave film. The song’s smoky, yet alluring arrangements are the perfect soundtrack for velvety leader singer María to put forth her inner yé-yé as she rides a Vespa across a barren paradise. María may sing "Cariño" in her native language (it translates to sweetheart in Spanish), but there’s no need for a translator to enjoy the band’s limber guitar strums and swooning brass melody.

"Cariño" is the first single off of The Marías’ forthcoming EP, Superclean Volume II, which is due out sometime in September. Catch them at the Lodge Room Highland Park on September 29. Juan Rodríguez

The Deli Philly’s Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Goodbye Max

Posted on:

Saying “goodbye” can often be a difficult act, and on Goodbye Max’s self-titled debut album (which is available on cassette via Fox Food Records), the Philly singer-songwriter beautifully and elegantly captures those conflicted feels. Unpacking an “old box” of memories, he leaves you drowning in a pool of emotions, before surfacing for that much-needed gasp of life. Goodbye Max’s desire this year is to find other musicians to collaborate with. So take a listen below, check out what this project is about HERE, and get in touch with him ASAP!

The Dead Shakers release eerie “Medfield” video & play O’Brien’s Pub (8.29)

Posted on:

Filmed only in available daylight in the abandoned Medfield State Hospital, the “Medfield” video (streaming below) from Burlington psych-rockers The Dead Shakers is as surreal as the track itself. Primary songwriter and frontman Kevin Bloom is seen alone in alternating settings, almost always standing completely still — as if he has become part of his surroundings. It is only during the songs climactic ending that he begins to gain a sort of agency and energy, walking down a path right towards the viewer. The track comes from The Dead Shakers’ debut LP All Circles Vanish, which took Bloom three years to create. It is a hugely collaborative effort, featuring a rotating cast of over a dozen creators. Catch The Dead Shakers playing live in Allston at O’Brien’s Pub on August 29. – Lilly Milman

Half Stack release single “Dually” & announce LP ‘Quitting Time’

Posted on:

The enigmatic Oakland five-piece Half Stack have released the first single off of their forthcoming LP Quitting Time. The freak-folk track “Dually” is textured with psychedelic influences that draw out and distort the vocals into a pleasantly unique incarnation of West Coast country. The repetition of the line “Is it real at all?” invites listeners to drift into Half Stack’s dream world, and we are happy to do it. Quitting Time will be released in full on October 19 via Processional Cross. – Lilly Milman

New Track: “No Surprise” – Trilobytes

Posted on:

Pairing lyrical lines with opposing viewpoints, “No Surprise,” the latest single from Trilobytes, covers multiple angles. Building from a somewhat menacing guitar riff and then marching on, the track’s subject appears to consider the possibilities without locking into a particular path. Sitting in the middle of dueling outlooks, a resignation of optimism appears to win out, but not before a brooding, instrumental foray.

A Conversation with Jordan Reyes of American Damage

Posted on:

Jordan Reyes returned to Chicago earlier this year with the hopes of launching a record label that would help him tell the story of and tell a story through experimental music. The result is American Damage and we recently had the opportunity to ask Jordan a few question about the label, his music, and the future of both.

You can read the full interview here and you can pre-order his new album, “Afraid of Death”, here.

American Damage will be releasing “Your Future Is Metal” from Ono on August 25th. They will be also be releasing “Predation Risk" from Crepuscular (aka Minneapolis’ Tina Dahl) and “Jo” from Chelsea Bridge (aka Mallory Linehan from Mkot Pt and Looms) on September 21st.

Spritzer premieres video for “Jean & Helene”

Posted on:

NYC’s Spritzer, the side project of Friend Roulette’s Matthew Flory Meade, is a band of skilled musicians who, refreshingly, don’t take themselves too seriously. The songs from their debut album, Love. Lies. Decay. have inflections of early-aughts indie reminiscent of Arcade Fire, but also sophisticated late ’80s/early ’90s pop like Prefab Sprout and The The. Songs like "Jean & Helene," whose video premiered a few days ago, are a rollicking ride, with relentless uptempo drums, reverb-laden vocals, and swirling synth lines that lend an air of the mystical to the already dream-like tunes. This is definitely a new NYC band to keep an ear on. – Ethan Ames
