New Track: “Red Light Green Light.” – Kilamanzego

Posted on:

“Red Light Green Light.,” the new single from Kilamanzego, frenetically veers into new directions. It sets a dramatic scope, and then heads into a playful 8-bit, bass-bumping groove, inserting a twisted spin on Tierra Whack’s “Toe Jam”. Why try to pin it down when all its unexpected nuances are so masterfully brought together. Kilamanzego will be warping minds this Saturday, July28 at PhilaMOCA, alongside fellow experimental Philly sound sculptors NAH, Ada Babar, and Palm‘s Kasra Kurt, as part of the All Mutable Summer Jam. PYNKIE brings gloomy twee pop to Baby’s All Right on 08.13

Posted on:

It can be easy to take the music of Lindsey Rae Radice, also known as PYNKIE, on face value. Just glancing at the SoundCloud page for half a second can give you a lighthearted and sweet impression of this New Jersey indie pop artist. There are cutesy emoticons and descriptors, smiley old photographs and an album cover that features a picture of a baby with a guitar drawn into his/her hands. It’s after your first listen of the album neoteny do you get a clearer idea of the kind of depth she is offering and the importance of this aesthetic. The warm guitar tones and soft drumming create lullaby-like atmospheres, quaint tunes like “Dog in the Sun” are full of sun-gleaming vocals and genuine affection in the lyrics. But there are turns when Radice points this bright outlook inward and lets the radiance fade. Her music is full of bewilderment, anxiously trying to maintain childlike exuberance as the grown-up world continues to push “maturity” through you. It leads to moments like the outro to “~Ghost~”, where the gorgeous acoustic arrangements become ghostly, alien sounds that, after so many upbeat songs, assume an uncomfortable aura. Stream PYNKIE’s album below and catch her performing at Baby’s All Right on August 13. -Tucker Pennington

Posted on:

The Deli Toronto is pleased to premiere the new music video from indie-rockers Bo Welland. Shawn Kosmo of Here Kitty Kitty Productions worked as the videographer for this basement rockin’ video. It was nice of the drummer to take off his hoodie and expose the deadly old Stars jersey. “Crack Change” is the title track from their upcoming EP. The new EP shows off the band exploring deeper sonic landscapes which can be heard in this track with the varying moods and dynamics. Bo Welland plays Friday August 3rd at the Horseshoe Tavern along with The Kitch and Liam Martini. – Kris Gies

Ruby Haunt share hypnotic new single “Darling,” play Moroccan Lounge residency in August

Posted on:

Ruby Haunt embark on a deep, yet nuanced exploration of their lives on "Darling." The wintry and reflective track, written by the songwriting duo of Wyatt Ininns and Victor Pakpour, slowly unfurls as it patiently reveals its plaintive guitars and hushed synth lines. The duo doesn’t expect to find any solutions, where instead, they draw out a languid mood piece that gives insight into their inward-looking observations.

"Darling" is the latest single off of Ruby Haunt’s forthcoming LP, Blue Hour, which is set to be released sometime in September. The duo is also playing a residency at the Moroccan Lounge in August, where proceeds will go to benefit Inner-City Arts. Juan Rodríguez

Miracle Condition “III”

Posted on:

Miracle Condition has returned from a four year hiatus and released their first album, III, since 2010. This is fuzzy Psych Rock of Mark Shippy and Pat Samson (formerly of U.S. Maple) with Matt Carson. The album was actually recorded back in 2012 at Electrical Audio Studio.

It is unclear why it took six years to release this album, but we are really glad it is in our ears right now.

New Track: “Can I Receive the Contact?” – The Spirit Of The Beehive

Posted on:

“Can I Receive the Contact?” is the lead single from The Spirit Of The Beehive’s forthcoming album Hypnic Jerks, due out September 14 via Tiny Engines. Keys lift in an emerging manner, before the band’s raw, lo-fi, experimental energy takes hold. It feels like witnessing a dream-state that is part floating fantasy, before shifting with urgency as the song’s inquisitive title is continuously repeated. The band is set to go out on an October-long tour with Pile, and will be making a stop home on Wednesday, October 18 at the First Unitarian Church. (Photo by Emily Burtner)

New Greg Mendez Single Release Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:

Philly singer-songwriter Greg Mendez just dropped a single release, containing a pair of new tracks. In “Purity (Walk On),” which was recorded for Adam Chimera’s "One Take Box" video series, self-aware, haunting harmonies address those individuals who one associates with, but don’t have your best interests at heart. The song has a folky, lo-fi isolation that’s caught in a pleasant sadness. Intermingling electronic percussion, bass, and keys to encompass a warm, minimalist groove, “Killer 57” seems like a retroactive, confessional apology, shining light on a memory in a nostalgic manner. Mendez is scheduled to appear at The Pharmacy on Friday, August 10, as part of a billing that also includes Sun Organ, No Better, and Lava Gulls. (Photo by Veronica Isley)

The-Drum (Jeremiah Meece and Brandon Higgenbotham) suddenly returned from a four year hiatus earlier this month with a “new” EP called “ Aura Bath”. It’s a collection of tracks they’ve aging throughout their hiatus, but sound just as fresh and relevant today.

Now they have dropped their fifth mixtape, “The Transformation of Things”. It is so great to have The-Drum back!

Darkwing plunge into relationship anxiety + play at Alphaville on 07.28

Posted on:

The crux of horror-punk’s ability to be taken seriously is that it takes menacing imagery that may have lost its potency and makes it sound horrifying and threatening – without altering the B-movie inspiration. Darkwing seems to have learned this important lesson on their latest single “Ignorant Ghost”, an anxious and ethereal grunge anthem. Vocals slathered in echo drone on about a relationship souring as pummeling drums implode. Leather jackets and smoking weed in bed are more in tune with stoner rock ideals, but the imagery of ghosting–ditching a relationship without a response and transforming into a literal specter–is amusing at first and haunting after repeated listens. The distressed energy of the songs is stretched ad infinitum during the instrumental bridge, where the guitar and bass interplay between Sharif Mekawy and Richard Rodgers feels like industrial machinery reaching its breaking point. Darkwing’s take on relationship death could have quickly become a joke song with a title like “Ignorant Ghost”, but it’s the atmosphere and sounds the band crafts surrounding these motifs that make it a unique blend of horror punk and grunge angst. You can stream the single below and catch the band playing at Alphaville on July 28. -Tucker Pennington

New QThree Album Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Pitch Black, the fresh batch of tracks from QThree, a.k.a. Eardrum, is out now via his local imprint Baked Recordings. Menacing, late-night beats cast a dark, dramatic tone; the importance of the moment weighs heavy as the ambiance quakes. Surveying the landscape, the boom-bap warps around the words, tunneling in a vortex that lays back but still brings the heat. The stars come out once the sun goes down.
