New Music Video: “Polyfoam” – Empath

Posted on:

Empath allow their freak flag to fly with some freeform dancing under misty lights in the new video for their latest single, "Polyfoam". The track is featured on the band’s upcoming 7-inch, Environments, due out July 23 via Get Better Records. The release is inspired by a series of Irv Teibel field recordings from the 60s/70s. It’s the follow-up to the group’s breakout EP Liberating Guilt And Fear, which they are currently on tour in support of. Right now, Empath’s next scheduled Philly performance is set for Wednesday, October 10 at the First Unitarian Church, where they’ll be opening for Swearin’. (Photo by Hillary Jones)

Roanoke plays ‘Where I Roam’ record release show at the Basement 6/23

Posted on:

Roanoke is a delightful folk collective with a luscious new music video out called "Silent Films." The video incorporates double-exposed clips of the band and nostalgic scenes of highways and countrysides. "Imagine what we’d see in our own silent films" is sung in exquisite two-part harmony by Taylor Dupuis and Joey Beesley, two voices blending like lovers falling into each others’ arms. Simply mesmerizing. Catch the group’s release show for their new record Where I Roam next week at the Basement, 6/23. –Geena Kloeppel

The Stray Birds “Nothing To Say About It Now” turns resignation into catharsis

Posted on:

"Love has nothing to say about it now" sing Maya de Vitry and Oliver Craven in unison, until de Vitry’s voice vanishes into the distance with a repeated "nothing to say about it now…" The new Stray Birds’ (de Vitry, Craven and Charlie Muench) single "Nothing To Say About It Now" creeps up from behind and pulls at your heartstrings unexpectedly. Somewhere between a crystal clear electric guitar that repeats the main vocal melody and a subtle acoustic guitar that drifts into the ether, this song completely stole my breath away. I’m surely not the only one eager to hear the band’s new album Let It Pass, out 9/7. –Geena Kloeppel

Weekend Warrior, June 15 – 17

Posted on:

Subdued, coarse-around-the-edges, melodic strolls statically sticking in one’s head, there’s a reverberating simplicity in the music of Permanent Body. It comforts in catchy, personal monologues that stretch and escalates into heavier, heady destinations. Tonight, at the First Unitarian Church, they’ll be joined by the raw release of emotion that erupts in fierce, aggressive, contagious catharsis, otherwise known as Mannequin Pussy. Brutal, chaotic noise expressively spills out in sugary pop-inflected glory. On the billing, you will also find the uproarious, stirring intensity of Chicago’s Slow Mass and the surging, reunited fuzz of Ovlov, who will be closing out the proceedings, with their new album Tru (Expoding In Sound) on the horizon. Man’s Body

Posted on:

Man’s Body is the trio of Greg Franco, J. Niimi, and Marco Obaya. They release a video for the lead single, “Man’s Body Theme”, from their forthcoming album, Put Your Family In It, which is due out on July 13th. The video was directed by Wes Tabayoyong and shot at Uptown in Westmont.

When I first pressed play on this one I wasn’t sure if it was a joke or just not my thing. However, found myself hooked by the chorus and the sincerity. It is truly refreshing to see body positivity presented in this way. After the third viewing, I simply can’t get this song out of my head.

You can help Man’s Body celebrate the release of their album at Debonair Social Club on July 13th with Two Trouser Betty and Hex Kittens.

New False Tracks EP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Recorded and mixed by Jeff Zeigler at Uniform Recording, Down There, the new EP from False Tracks, recently surfaced. Joy and agitation converge. Weaving in and out of tempos, while curating a range of intensity that never loses its personal edge, the songs leave their mark quickly. It tears through the dimly lit streets of Philly in a sneaky, smooth way.

Fresh Buzz: Triathalon plays Brooklyn Steel on June 18th

Posted on:

In this new age of bedroom pop and DIY everything, Georgia’s band Triathalon, who recently resettled in NYC, offers a sound all its own, blending elements as varied as soul, pop, jazz, and electro. Attempting to label their music proves challenging – and that’s part of the plan, since they state that they "work towards a sound that can’t easily be defined.” Thriathalon’s first two EP sounded like rather unfocused takes on anything within the indie realm, from dream pop to slacker rock. Third LP Online, released earlier in 2018, sounds like music made by a different band altogether: the production is more mature, the sound more focused, and a newfound passion for soul seems to have shuffled the band’s sonic cards. “Hard to Move” is reminiscent of a lo-fi, synthed version of Michael Jackson’s “Blame it on the Boogie,” while “3” is backed with a thumping bass verse that cleverly transitions to a jazz-inspired keyboard interlude. This is a band with lots of potential, check them out live on June 18th at  Brooklyn Steel. – Lily Crandall

New Track: “Let it Ring” – Pritty Gritty.

Posted on:

“Let It Ring,” the debut single from the trio of Pritty Gritty., was recorded at Miner Street Recording, and co-produced by Julia Rainer and Jackie Milestone, as a collaboration between Weathervane Music and Girls Rock Philly. Interlacing vocal harmonies and the gentle, unwinding instrumentation cultivate a reflection inward. The song has a youthful twee-pop sound, but the message can be applied universally. Prioritizing one’s self-interest over the needs of others is a tough balancing act, but recalibrating every once in a while is a necessary exercise.

Wasting Time – Brand New Pop Punk “Tales from the Morgue”, Sneaky Dee’s 07.06

Posted on:

Wasting Time are a pop-punk band from Toronto specializing in mean-spirited jokes and acting like twelve year olds. Twelve was a fun age. They released a new record in May called “Tales from the Morgue”. Track 2 is titled “Hang Out At The Beach (Slapfish Tacos)” and I knew I would like that tune immediately. Hanging by the beach and driving an El Camino is all I ever really want to do so they these fellas basically nailed it. They play Sneaky Dee’s on July 6th opening for LETDOWN along with Gold Route and Closer to Zero. – Kris Gies
