If there’s a turn of phrase we kind of detest here at The Deli is "taking the scene by storm." It’s one of those generic prefab sentences that ring insincere. But then again, sometimes, some bands do that – kind of rare, but it happens, right? And sometimes, on a hot day like today, being lazy is kind of inevitable. So… yes! Brooklyn’s Bodega are taking the NYC scene by storm with their blend of post-punk and pop and their super-fun live shows. That, and their somewhat familiar name, are the main reasons why they are on the cover of the new, spring 2018 issue of The Deli!
The issue, our 54th NYC one, is now up online and you can read it here.
It’s an issue linked to the biggest event for musicians we’ve ever organized, which will host a Stompbox Exhibit, a Synth Expo and a Vintage Guitar Exchange in a Bushwick art gallery called Absurd Conclave – hope to see you there!
Katie Bennett, a.k.a. Free Cake For Every Creature, just shared “Around You,” the first single off her forthcoming LP The Bluest Star, due out August 3 via Double Double Whammy. The song opens at a jogging pace, showcasing exertion but with a relaxed backdrop. That heartwarming earnestness reflects on the joyous, fluttery feelings of an unforgettable crush/love. You can share in the feels with Bennett & friends at Everybody Hits on Friday, August 3, where they’ll be supported by Told Slant and Slow Ref.
Drinker’s “Follow” is the train-riding, solo-walking, last-hour-of-a-long-flight soundtrack you have been waiting for. It has a transportative element, a mellow, continual feel of slowly traveling to an eventual goal. Producer and composer Ariel Loh achieves this by layering singer-songwriter Aaron Mendelsohn’s soothing vocals over looping electronic beats and synth pads you can get lost in. It’s a yearning, earnest, repeating plea by Mendelsohn: “If I can make you follow / I think that we might find our way.” “Follow” is the first single from their forthcoming album, and if this track is any way a preview of things to come, Drinker is definitely one to keep an ear on. – Lily Crandall
"Lance" is a fun song. So is "Green." But if you actually listen to their new record Adama from top to bottom, you’ll see that Ambrose is interested in a lot of different emotions- and their music has become an exploration of sorts. "Lance" is an upbeat trippy rock song, whereas "Circle" puts you in a haze and then flings you into wild and groovy guitar solos. Perhaps Nashville folks get down to Ambrose the way Berliners get funky with techno. Anyhow- I’m having a solo-rave to this album in my apartment. -Geena Kloeppel
Rarely does a song feel like a dream to me, but I definitely had to play "Water Bearer" twice to make sure I hadn’t been transported to another world somewhere in the middle. The tone of Michelle Mandico’s voice is soothing yet alert at the same time- it asks to be heard, but not in an intrusive way. With a subtle arrangement and a gorgeous video punctuated by natural scenery and some choreographed sections, "Water Bearer" is a wonderful artistic statement and we at the Deli can’t wait for Mandico’s full-length, which releases July 6th. Catch her live at City Winery on 6/25. –Geena Kloeppel
Claude (F.K.A. Clau Veux) is the etherial dream-pop of Claudia Ferme. She released her latest EP, “Enactor”, back on May 25th via Just For You Records in Indianapolis.
Below is the video her EP’s title track, “Enactor”, which was directed by CJ Lamborn.
I don’t really know to much about Florasim, i.e. who she is, but here new EP, "Emotional Honesty 2.0", has really caught my attention. Only four songs, one of which is only 40 seconds, this EP beautiful blends electronic music, samples, and lush vocals.
At the very least this EP makes me want to find out more about Florasim.
Brown Rainbow‘s new single, “SR 2K18 sorry,” is an unexpected, pleasant surprise. The song self-disparages as a low-key melody finds its place. Coming to grips/recognizing one’s shortcomings, the recording kinda bums you out but in a familiar, self-loathing way. Slow-burning honesty hits overdrive as a fiery guitar jam arises, before returning to its mellow beginnings. Welcome the hypnotic haze as it washes over you.
Robert Tilden ponders an imaginary escape on "Take Me Away." The glistening standalone track under his moniker BOYO, which features psych-pop local musician Dent May, sounds like a lost, starry-eyed sixties chart-topper. Like most of his recent full-length debut, Me, Again, it also mirrors feelings of isolation and depression, as his swelling guitar arpeggios unravel with an acquiescent calm. As for recording with May, he was both grateful and awestruck by the experience, an opportunity that came his way after they both met at a music festival they were both playing together.
"Take Me Away" is out now via Danger Collective. Juan Rodríguez
Rachel Angel’s Not Enough EP, released in April of this year on Human Noise Records, is full of folky lo-fi recordings, calm tracks that play like warm cups of tea and morning sun. The EP’s three songs (it also includes a demo version of the title track) aren’t necessarily subdued, but Angel’s focus is on subtler, internal emotional tension. Her new video for “Not Enough,” directed by Olivia Mertz, fits perfectly into that aesthetic with a grainy VHS style quality, following Angel through a day that’s charming, if marked by brief discomforts. There are autumn leaves, bagels, and some reading in the park, all of which Angel’s music seems meant to soundtrack. Watch the video for “Not Enough” below. – Cameron Carr
