The Tibetan Buddhist believe that “’tulpa’ is a concept in mysticism and the paranormal of a being or object which is created through spiritual or mental powers.” Philly indie rockers, who bare the same name, just think that “it sounds cool.” And judging by the three-piece’s love for the single, “We Did It Again,” from 2003’s Biker Boyz soundtrack, which features the unholy union of Metallica, Ja Rule, and Swizz Beats, and their respect for artists like Palm, Vunderbar, and Mile High Club, we think that it would be fun to grab a few beers and pick their brains about music. You’ll have the opportunity to do so this Friday, July 15 at World Café Live, where Tulpa will be performing at the venue’s fledgling Spotlight Artist Series, alongside Brooklynites Goodfight. But first, you can learn a little more about The Deli Philly’s recent Featured Artist(s) Poll Winners HERE.

Real Clothes summons spiritual trip-hop at Alphaville on 06.19
Real Clothes‘ Nico Fox describes her music as performance art, but that description doesn’t do justice to the music that she creates. Performance art conjures up images of artists in brightly lit museums gesturing in an ostentatious fashion for the audience to look at without much interaction on their part. The twisted and celestial creations crafted by Real Clothes guides listeners through Fox’s headspace, often crumbling or repeating in hypnotic trances. Using trip-hop as a starting point, Fox’s songs quickly branch into experimental hymns that feel truly unique. They are spirituals for the digital age, featuring shuttering drum patterns and glittery synths that surround her voice without preventing it from reaching its mesmerizing peak. And Fox’s performances are often dimly lit with lamps resembling candlelight as she sways from side to side, serenading her audience. It’s spellbinding in quality, fascinating in a somewhat alienating way. Most importantly, Fox’s music grabs listeners and pulls them on a aural journey that is simultaneously weightless and deeply impactful. You can stream “Bruja 魔女: The Screwed Pedant Lies” off the 2016 album Modulation below and see Real Clothes perform live at Alphaville on June 19. – Tucker Pennington
New Music Video: “Mercy Me” – The Trust Fund Kids
As we wait his debut album, Kevin Connor, a.k.a. The Trust Find Kids, just dropped a new video for his new single, “Mercy Me”. Delivered via the nostalgic VHS medium, the footage peppers in points of pop culture, while also providing a playful look into the creative process. The song, which was mixed at Sleepless Sound and mastered by Ian Farmer (formerly of Modern Baseball) at The Metal Shop, captures that bouncy, youthful angst reminiscent of Weezer, whose t-shirt is conveniently adorned. The telepathic communication between Connor and his cat is a humorous scene, with whom many a pet owner can identify with.

VALA’s “I’ve Got Me” is an assertive indie pop fight-song
VALA doesn’t only sound cool as a cucumber, but their visuals are pretty badass too. These three women (Marie Hines, Kristen Rogers and Holley Maher) released an incredibly hooky, self-assertive self-titled record last month. Its lead single, "I’ve Got Me," is about not needing anyone else, just yourself. This is especially refreshing in today’s pool of love songs. VALA is synth-y, reverberous, rhythmic and danceable. It’s been a few decades since the Spice Girls ruled the pop scene, so it’s high time for girl groups to make a comeback. I sure hope it’s VALA. –Geena Kloeppel
Folkicana is a genre now, we’ve all been blessed (thanks to Riley Moore’s “Pancakes and M&Ms”)
Remember Sunday pancakes? Warm mornings on the front porch? Okay, perhaps that’s a pretty stereotypical American childhood summer, so to our readers abroad- welcome to our nostalgia! Riley Moore’s "Pancakes and M&Ms" is a real diamond in the rough when it comes to country/folk songs about growing up. Somehow, Moore has managed to make new an old concept- and it’s not necessarily in the arrangement, which is folksy and nicely executed, but it’s definitely in the lyrics. "Watch the sunrise / smell the pancakes / giving Robert Redford handshakes / never thought that they’d be green with M&M." Simple, yet mesmerizing. I might’ve teared up. Keep your eyes out for Moore’s debut album and release show at the Radio Cafe on June 29th. –Geena Kloeppel

New Track: “A Song For Those Who Miss You All The Time” – Thin Lips
Thin Lips just announced that their new full-length album, Chosen Family, is scheduled for release on July 27 via Lame-O Records. Its first single, “A Song For Those Who Miss You All The Time,” channels the grief from the death of Chrissy and Mikey Tashijan’s younger brother. A conversational recollection is encountered via a dream. Addressing numerous, lingering, unanswered questions, the pain of personal loss remains. There’s a comfort in the smoothness of the emotive vocals and the crisp guitar licks. As we move forward, we still carry the memory of those we love with us. Before heading out on tour with good pals Hop Along, Thin Lips are slated to open for Japandroids on Tuesday, July 24 at Boot & Saddle.
