Huh perform thoughtful and rowdy rock at Alphaville on 06.14

Posted on:

The most striking thing you might notice about Huh’s music is how it blends its meticulousness with its witty and relatively catchy songwriting. Many of the songs found on the Whatever You Want EP deal with being fed up with the bullshit of the world and forging whatever path they want: men sharing poetry they think is darker than anything you could understand; being with any man they want without worrying about what others think; condemning their youth if it means usurping their own privilege… The four songs, while brief, say a lot about what’s on this four-piece’s mind. But the band never becomes entirely weighed down by their own messages; the precise and mechanical drumming from Ryann Slauson pushes each song forward while Tia Vincent-Clark’s distinctly rebellious vocals punctuate every song’s message with cathartic triumph. New Jonny Clousson EP Available for Streaming & Download

Posted on:

Jonny Clousson, of North Carolina’s Almost People, recently shared a pair of tracks. The Two Cents EP gradually builds melodically in an uphill climb. A conversational, stream-of-consciousness lyricism opens an avenue into the emotive, internal monologue. Casual, contagious energy and sing-along-inspiring hooks make you want to stay there. Instead of getting caught up in the past or the future, slow it down, listen, and enjoy the moment.

Chicago Funk Mafia

Posted on:

Chicago Funk Mafia released their latest album, Boötis, last week. This is the five piece funk project consisting of Mike Mongoven (Guitar), Max Mauer (Piano/Vocals), Dustin Borlack (Drums), James Wenzel (Bass), and Myrrick Liontonia (Vocals).

The album title and cover are a play on the constellation Boötes and you can tell that it also inspired some intergalactic funk on this project. My favorite track is the laidback, poolside ready, tune “Summer Song” below.

You can catch Chicago Funk Mafia at the Merchant Street Music Festival in Kankakee on July 27th.

Champagne Superchillin’ release stylish new video, perform at Alphaville on 06.23

Posted on:

Opening with strings that instantly hook listeners is a bold move for a band’s lead single. But everything about Champagne Superchillin’ screams boldness, from the sensual and soothing vocals sung entirely in French to the title of their newest single which translates into “love of fate”. “Amor Fati” is a cool, cinematic song and the first single of the band’s upcoming album Beach Deep. It utilizes the sum of the band’s parts to create something that is effortless in its charisma; the bass line instantly finds a swaying groove as a psychedelic mist coats the guitars. The single is evocative and instills old-school pop styles without relying on nostalgia to create a brilliant introduction to the band. However, the track also blends darker tones to create something that is simultaneously mesmeric and uneasy. The strings cut back in twice, transforming the song into a bewitching soundtrack for nocturnal creatures. You can watch the music video for “Amor Fati” below and catch Champagne Superchillin’ performing at Alphaville on June 23. -Tucker Pennington

New Track: “this.is.water.” – Nuna & the Wayward Spirit

Posted on:

Nuna & the Wayward Spirit are releasing a new single on the first of every month, accumulating to the RISE.LIKE.RAIN EP. “this.is.water.” serves as the first installment. Keys create an awaking atmosphere before the burst of instrumentation breaks through. Steadily matriculating in controlled steps, the track searches for solutions amid the balancing act of life. Remaining calm in the face of change, there’s a controlled, contemplative essence, as the internal evolution threatens to tear you apart. (Photo by Frank Lettieri Jr.)

Silver Twins unveil new single “Bruce Lee,” play Hotel Cafe on 6.27

Posted on:

Alex Marín was something of a nomad before he finally settled in Los Angeles. He soon met with William Gardner, and alongside drummer Grant Van Amburgh, assembled the definitive version of his latest project, Silver Twins. And their first single, "Bruce Lee" is a stellar summation of that period, a pulsing indie rocker with anthemic flourishes. Marín is the lovelorn chaser who’s pining for affection, though judging by the song’s killer, shout-worthy hook, he quells that urge with a joyous intensity.

Listen to "Bruce Lee" below. And make sure to catch the trio perform at Hotel Cafe on June 27. Juan Rodríguez

Soulful pop singer Kat Cunning to play House of Yes on 06.13

Posted on:

New York native, queer singer-songwriter Kat Cunning is no stranger to the stage. After earning a BFA in dance, performing on Broadway with Cirque du Soleil, and recently landing a recurring role on HBO, Kat has transitioned to the third aspect of the triple threat, and found a home in singing. In her new single, “Wild Poppies,” loosely based on The Wizard of Oz, she explores the idea of “a version of The Wizard of Oz where Dorothy doesn’t come home.” Cunning’s sultry, velvet voice perfectly intensifies the tragic lyrics “The courage to / See through you’d have kept me blind / We’re face to face / And I’ve pulled the curtain wide.” The passion of Lorde mixed with the pop feel of Billie Eilish results in a caramel-smooth stripped-down pop ballad of love, pain, and coming to terms with the truth of a relationship. She returned to her home of New York after finishing a sold-out national tour with singer-songwriter LP, and you can catch her live at House of Yes tonight (June 13th). – Lily Crandall, photo by Ben Trivett

The Nightowls Debut Music Video For “#selfieQueen”

Posted on:

Bursting onto the scene in 2014 with a debut album, the Nightowls have had a ubiquitous presence in the Austin scene for the last four years, consistently playing shows for a loyal and growing group of fans. The soul and R&B connoisseurs dropped their latest album, We Are The Nightowls, on April 27th but we are debuting their new music video "#selfiequeen", which happens to be as magenetic as their raucous live shows. Lead singer of the ten-piece, Ryan Harkrider, explains the video: "We wrote #selfiequeen in response to this funny trend we’ve noticed at our live shows where fans will turn their backs to us and get their phone out to take selfie with the band in the background. It’s an odd scene from our perspective and we just wanted song that welcomed this and could turn it into something we could all enjoy together." The Nightowl’s latest album was two years in the making and, a video like "#selfiequeen", which was shot live at EAR studios by Jeff Ray, is a perfect window into the charismatic live performances that have made the band popular. Check out the upcoming tour dates for the Nightowls on their website, www.wearethenightowls.com
