Liquor Radio brings energetic indie-folk to Mercury Lounge 04.15

Posted on:

New York’s Liquor Radio tastefully blends indie-rock with dashes of Americana to create a sound that’s quite their own. Their sound is energetic yet controlled; the band’s rhythm section is somewhat dialed back, with melancholy violin and piano leading many of their songs. Further, Liquor Radio indulges in intricate vocal harmonies, rounding out an intriguing and assertive sound. Liquor Radio is playing Mercury Lounge on April 15th, with Juliet Garrett. Bambara celebrates release of noisy third LP at ALPHAVILLE 04.13

Posted on:

The first instinct when hearing Bambara is to label it as a noise-rock outfit, but pretty soon there comes a hesitation. The New York transplants, originally from Georgia, bring a sort of Western rhythm into the affair. The howling guitars start sounding like an ominous wind ripping across the new frontier, the groaning vocals become an impassioned southern drawl. That may be overstating certain influences, but it is true that the core of Bambara’s sound is a mutation of guitar music, manifesting in near-forgotten influences (desert rock?) and otherworldly contortions of guitar noise. That remains just as true on the band’s third album, Shadow on Everything, released last week. It’s a dark, effects-heavy piece of post-punk that draws apt comparisons to the deep, tense and troubled music of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. On April 13th, a week after that release, Bambara will celebrate the album live performing with added accompaniment from strings and saxophone at ALPHAVILLE. Slow Cooked Offers Alt-Soul At A Simmer

Posted on:

New Orleans is only about an 8 hour drive from Austin, but its cultural influence seems to wash up on our shores regularly. Slow Cooked is gets its name and derives its influence from the ‘slow cooked’ gumbo of Louisiana of which its methodology can also be applied to soul music.  Multiple ingredients and distinct soulful sounds swirl around band leader, Alex Hartley, who orchestrates the sextet with the patience and experience of a tenured soul man. Vocalist, Ida Khojandpour, brings Slow Cooked tracks to life through her versatile singing prowess.  Slow Cooked claims a variety of influences which evidences their trajectory towards alt-soul.  Listed influences include Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Vulfpeck, Thelonious Monk, Tom Waits, Radiohead, Bruno Mars, Charles Mingus, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, and Radiohead. Indulge your senses by catching the newly formed Slow Cooked, as they begin to raise the heat in Austin.

On May 4, Movie Was Bad/Mascula, the double EP from Sixteen Jackies, is set for release via Philly’s own Born Losers Records. The band’s new single and the second installment in the VHS series; “VHS #2 (Masks)" projects an eerie atmosphere, with each installment pulling "from a different classic horror film for inspiration (while not being too overt) and this one in particular pulls its images from Texas Chainsaw Massacre." Looking back on the range of possibilities one’s upbringing projects on his/her/their future, a villain takes note, backed by a looming albeit energetic, musical menace. Indie-rock quartet Valley Queen share new single “Chasing the Muse”

Posted on:

On a Friday night, I decided to walk into one of the nosiest and busiest bars in my hometown, opened up my laptop and began listening to Valley Queen’s NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert series. Through the annoying drunk bar guests and awful overhead music, Natalie Carol’s hypnotic voice and beautiful harmonies demanded my attention. Raw, ingenious talent ignites from the guitar, through her soul, and out her mouth to create a natural and humbling sound that is reminiscent of Stevie Nicks, Florence Welch, and Josephine Vander Gucht.

Roll Call Family Records has official welcomed Valley Queen to their family earlier this year, as their debut album will be released soon. But until then, we have the pleasure of listening to their single “Chasing The Muse.” Valley Queen is currently touring the west coast with Liza Anne, so make sure to catch them while you can. Colatura release track “Afraid”; play Rose Gold on 04.12

Posted on:

In the spring of 2017, Colatura vocalist/guitarist Digo Degorio convinced vocalist/guitarist Jennica Best to quit her job and start a band with him. With the help of drummer Rich DeGregorio, the band built up a following by playing shows around the city. Now they have a debut EP ready to release on April 13th. The EP, titled Spring Drew Blood, introduces the world to Colatura’s eclectic style, which takes from ’60s garage rock to ’90s grunge and post-punk. Tracks on the album examine the concept of self-worth, made clear in song titles such as "Is Love Enough?" and "Afraid". You can stream the latter track below. Listen for Degorio’s dreamy guitars which can turn crunchy on a dime, and for Best’s opera-tinged vocals.

Colatura will perform at a release show for Spring Drew Blood at Rose Gold on April 12th; get the EP there before it goes live online the next day. – Will Sisskind

New Track: “Hit or Miss” – Ceramic Animal

Posted on:

Ceramic Animal recently shared a new single, “Hit or Miss,” featured on their forthcoming sophomore album. A strolling, twang-inflected ditty is warmed-over with the addition of keys. Re-routing misguided ambitions, while aspiring to retain companionship, the song hovers between hope and a melancholy distance. You can find the dapper quartet at Union Transfer on Thursday, May 17, supporting local boogie-woogie rock ‘n’ rollers Low Cut Connie. (Photo by Dylan O’Connor)
