In the late ’80s, when bands like the Happy Mondays and the Stone Roses were all the rage, Manchester, UK was the kingdom of alternative pop. The wild parties propelled by that scene triggered the nickname "Madchester," which was soon adopted to describe that era’s music, which blended funk drumming and psych arrangement with an overall pop sensibility. In new single "Sex Crystal" (video streaming below), NYC via Australia electronic one-man-act Fascinator seems to find inspiration in that sound, something not many Big Apple-based artists have attempted. The formula still works, at least on semi-veterans of the scene like us.
The single will be included in the long awaited sophomore LP ‘Water Sign,’ out Friday 11 May via Spinning Top (Tame Impala, GUM, POND) /Caroline. Fascinator will support the release with a tour that will see him perform at Warsaw on May 30th.
New Track: “Little Man” – Yeenar
Philly four-piece Yeenar recently shared a new single, called “Little Man”. Unfolding from a tight guitar pattern, the song gathers steam as backend elements flesh out a momentous rush. Riding a wave that escalates and ebbs, as points of wisdom, in regards to youth activity and friendship, are offered. Get outside, and enjoy the company of others, or convene this evening at Ortlieb’s, where the band will be sharing a billing with Effusion 35 and Young Pilgrims.
Post Rock trio Tigue releases “Strange Paradise” EP at Elsewhere on 04.27
Those who were bewitched by Tortoise’s post-rock masterpiece TNT owe it to themselves to get familiar with Brooklyn’s Tigue. The Brooklyn trio produces hypnotizing, circular instrumentals that slowly evolve in some kind of "internal" way – like in single "Triangle," whose video was unveiled last week. The harmonic content of the song doesn’t change (i.e. there is no chorus), but the continued changes in textures and instrumental parts, together with a literally unsettling time signature, keep the track interesting, and the bodies moving. The band will celebrate the release of their new EP ‘Strange Paradise’ at Elsewhere on April 27th.
Ravyn Lenae “4 Leaf Clover”
Ravyn Lenae has released a video for her song “4 Leaf Clover”. The song features Steve Lacy (The Internet) and is taken from her recently released EP, "Crush".
Lenae will be performing at Pitchfork Music Festival on Sunday, July 22nd.
New Dani in Public EP Available for Streaming & Download
There’s a cool, composed yet emotionally-exposed feeling in Leverage, the new EP from Dani in Public. Seeing things like a fly on the wall, a calm-under-pressure vulnerability smoothly slides these scenes into view. Those engaging, multi-dimensional shots reel you in, and the lo-fi, trance-inducing beats make it easy to cruise through these stream-of-consciousness scenarios.
Tiny Stills celebrate self-love on video for “La La,” new LP on 6/1
Kailynn West shows infectious contentment on "La La." West, who leads power-pop four piece Tiny Stills, shares a message that is simple to adhere to, yet always difficult to put into practice: be yourself. On the hummable "La La" – a play on words which attributes a carefree attitude to any negative influences – she means to drown out all the outside noise. Her renewed enjoyment beams with every candid gesture on the band’s performance-based video, where they all put forth a spirited dynamic that’s lead by her crunchy, guitar-driven pop.
"La La" is the latest single off of Tiny Stills’ forthcoming LP, Laughing Into the Void, which comes out on June 1. The band will also be celebrating a hometown album release show on May 31 at The Hi Hat. Juan Rodríguez
Songwriter Shlomo Franklin releases new EP on 05.16 at Rockwood Stage 2
Indie-folk singer-songwriter Shlomo Franklin releases his new EP "Don’t Love Anybody" on May 16th at Rockwood’s Stage 2. Franklin, one of the most active members of the NYC local music scene, tapped once again into his influences of Neil Young and Johnny Cash to produce the record’s title track. Released earlier this April, the song highlights Franklin’s rugged vocals and acoustic guitar, with other instruments — keys, bass, strings, drums — joining in as the desperation in Franklin’s voice swells throughout the song. As a love song filled with pining, Franklin makes sure to get the instrumentation and deliver the emotion just right, and he does, making such a delivery of raw fervor and honesty seem easy. Listen to "Don’t Love Anybody" below, and head to Rockwood on May 16th to pick up a copy of Franklin’s full EP. – Will Sisskind
Head – Brand New Kick Ass Rock n’ Roll
Head is a brand new 3 piece rock n roll band from Toronto. They have recently released their first single “Runaway” and it absolutely rips. We’re talkin’ straight up rock n roll. Produced by Ian Blurton; the vocals remind me a little bit of Iggy and the music would be right up his alley too. I can picture an old muscle car firin’ down a gravel road with this song cranked up and smoke bellowing from the windows. Head plays The Red Light (Dundas/Dufferin) on Saturday April 28th with Shallow Waves. – Kris Gies
SF’s The Fixins Release Debut EP + play The Plough and Stars (5.4.)
The debut EP Rain or Shine by the San Francisco-based jam rock quartet The Fixins proves that they are not just the Bay Area’s fair-weathered friends—they’re here to stay. After playing countless live shows, they’ve finally laid down a recording. Their four-track EP is Americana influenced, with the occasional bluesy swell. It’s smooth and intricate, riffing off classic jam inspirations to create an extremely energetic record. Quite frankly, it’s something you and your dad can listen to together—easily. The release of their EP is kicking off a long string of summer shows for The Fixins, starting with a show at Peri’s Silver Dollar Bar in Fairfax on the 3rd. They will also be at San Francisco’s own The Plough and Stars the next day. – Lilly Milman

Moontower Comedy Festival Provides Star-Studded Laughs
Moontower Comedy Fest Review
It seems like every weekend Austin has some major feature or festival planned. Whether it’s a 5k race or SXSW, it is easy for Austinites to become jaded to the parade of festivities that our city regularly hosts. While ACL, SXSW, and Formula 1 are weekends that jut out of the collective consciousness as major calendar events, there are a slew of quality festivals that don’t get nearly as much recognition. Moontower Comedy Festival is, in my opinion, the most criminally underrated festival on the annual Austin calendar. On a trajectory of steady growth and improvement, Moontower Comedy Fest continues to attract major comedian headliners, but simultaneously puts in the groundwork to fill out it’s undercard with a plethora of talented yet lesser-known comics.
This year Moontower outdid itself with featured comics like Mike Birbiglia, Judah Friedlander, Maria Bamford, Janeane Garofalo, David Cross, Weird Al, and the red-hot Tiffany Haddish all playing at the prestigious and classic Paramount and Stateside theaters. Moontower revolves around 12 venues that host a variety of shows, screenings, and panels – so while there may be a healthy dose of walking involved, there is always something to attend, leaving little down time. While the festival lasts from Wednesday-Saturday night, there are countless events and themes that will leave many attendees having to prioritize which event to see.
With a variety of comics and events jammed into a whirlwind of a weekend, it is an arduous process of selecting the shows that stood a head above the rest, but here three that turned a few heads.
Mike Birbiglia @ Paramount Theater on Thursday Night
Birbiglia seems to be everywhere these days. Appearances on tv shows, standup specials, and feature films are all under Mike’s belt. His standup didn’t seem to get pidgeon-holed into any one category, he dabbled in politics, sex, and married life which all coalesced into an incredible show. (His take on the Boston Marathon bombing, while morbid, almost gave me a cracked rib)
The Comedy Resistance @ Paramount Theater on Friday Night
A group of comics, musicians, and polticians came together to rally against Trump with anecdotes of the election and twisted theories on what’s next. David Cross, Maria Bamford, Judah Friedlander, Julio Torres, Janelle James and many other performers took the stage for a hodgepodge of political insight and humor. Friedlander and Cross stole the show with a deluge of crass but hilarious political bits. Politician, Gina Ortiz Jones, and musician, Ted Leo, offered some variety but the comics dominated the liberal and willing audience.
Tiffany Haddish @ Paramount Theater on Saturday Night
Still unknown to large swaths of the American public, Tiffany Haddish is quickly becoming a national treasure. Her appearances in popular film comedies, hosting Saturday Night Live, and her close friendship with Beyonce have established Tiffany as an undebiable talent that we want to know more about. Closer to a rock star than comedian, Haddish’s performance was electric, provocative, and viscerally hilarious. Admitting that she had to scrap what she had written, because the audience is almost all-white, Haddish improvised and riffed on a variety of subjects. While Tiffany shines brightest when talking about sex, it was a bit about stealing a man’s soul that sent many in the crowd falling into the aisles.
While Moontower Comedy Festival doesn’t assume the same gravity that some of the other events in town have, it does offer a perfect triumvirate of affordable prices, professional staff and logistics, and quality talent that returns with consistency. The festival is a truly unique Austin experience that appeals to an eclectic mix of demographics but all boils down to the simple fact that it has succeeded in making thousands of people laugh.
