SXSW Presents: SassyBlack

Posted on:

SassyBlack is everything. The songstress and producer is well-educated and classically trained with roots in jazz and soul, though she is in no way confined to them elementally. Formally of the Seattle group THEEsatisfaction and having worked closely with experimental hip-hop duo Shabazz Palaces and traveled the world, SassyBlack (whose real name is Catherine Harris-White) has no shortage of experience to contribute to the psychedelic electronic r&b she makes.

Her voice smooth like soulfully funky butter, it’s reminiscent of Ella Fitzgerald, Janelle Monae, Erykah Badu and J*Davey with a Herbie Hancock twist to her production, adding a modern and intellectual spin to her performances. SassyBlack grew up with a family devoted to music, their time spent together having dance parties and playing music history trivia. She still engages her love for pop culture and music history, having recorded three volumes so far of her Pop (& R&B) Treasury cover EPs.

Whether it’s an original track or a tribute to a deep cut, everything SassyBlack touches is gold, and worthy of numerous replays.

SXSW Presents: Special Explosion

Posted on:

It’s been nearly a decade since dreamo (that’s dream-pop and emo, in case you were wondering) act Special Explosion erupted onto the scene, and we couldn’t be more happy to have them after all these years. They take out the whininess typically associated with emo music. Instead, they keep all of that emotion and channel it through tender indie rock with lucid atmospheres and textures.

Even during a time when the world around them, in a musical and real life sense, was unreliable and confusing, Special Explosion maintained their collective head, supported by their four pairs of shoulders. With many releases behind them, their late 2017 album To Infinity can be considered debut, as far as full-length records are concerned. It provides 10 tracks worth of their adept instrumentation, recalling earlier days of Death Cab for Cutie and Sufjan Stevens but always sounding like their own.

They’re the kind of band you see and fall in love with, over and over again, and that’s part of what makes them so special.

STREAM Mobilities’ ‘Time Hasn’t Swallow Us Yet,’ Out Now

Posted on:

If you couldn’t already tell by their name, Mobilities is a band about free movement; fluidity in their instrumentation, production and genre influences is part of what makes Mobilities such an enjoyable and dynamic group. Their self-titled EP was one of the first tastes of their particular flavor they shared with the world, but their debut full-length Time Hasn’t Swallowed Us Yet goes even further to showcase their spirited musicianship.

Most of the songs on Time Hasn’t Swallowed Us Yet were written by lead vocalist/guitarist Eric McCauley and bassist/vox Brett Sparrey (though each member had a hand in writing their own parts) and recorded over about a five month span at Toadhouse Studios. Musically, you can hear the influence bands like Queens of the Stone Age, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, and local phenoms Portugal. The Man have had on them, blurring lines between what’s considered alternative, experimental rock, indie, garage and punk. But, Mobiliities takes their songs in their own direction lyrically and sonically. The album is thematically based on social issues, touching on political and philosophical issues as well. It’s a journey from start to finish, and one that is worth taking with the band.

Catch Mobilities, along with Eugene’s Childspeak and The Von Howlers, for the Time Hasn’t Swallowed Us Yet album release show 2.24 at Kelly’s Olympian. Dive into the album in its entirety below. You won’t be disappointed.

Cherry Blaster – Alt Synth Pop play Handlebar 02.24

Posted on:

Eerie synthpop with an alternative tinge is what I gather from Cherry Blaster. The tune “Modern Dance” kicks off with some very deep bassy synth that would rattle your brain when listened to at a loud decibel. It would be the best way to hear it. The song is composed very uniquely with interestingly different parts that flow together in somewhat unusual ways. Cherry Blaster will be performing at Handlebar on February 24th with ZOO OWL and Bad Passion. – Kris Gies

Alt-rock trio FOXTRAX plays SXSW on 3/12 and 3/14

Posted on:

FOXTRAX is waking up the alt rock scene with their tight, nuanced arrangements and excellent songwriting chops. The trio embraces their music’s dark undertones but isn’t afraid to make light of a rainy day- or in this case, a "Grey Morning." Churning out consistently excellent vocal performances, guitar lines and all around vibes, this band is one of the most solid and compelling that I’ve heard for a while in the alt-rock genre. Be sure to check them out when FOXTRAX heads to SXSW, playing showcases at the Convention Center on 3/12 and Javelina on 3/14. –Geena Kloeppel

Buzz Alert: Bohan Phoenix’s Chinese-Brooklynite hip hop

Posted on:

Bohan Phoenix raps like he’s born and raised in Brooklyn.  His style is so close to the Beast Coast vibe, that he could be a Flatbush Zombie bitten by a Chengdu werewolf.  He flexes flows between English and Mandarin with such ease, sometimes it’s hard to tell; you think he’s just flowing some fresh new slang you’re not hip to.  His beat selection is Sichuan.  His flow is sharp as a Jian.  His swag is Flatbush AF.  His Jala EP is rolling into your collection like a cloud of Kush smoke.  You’ll be rapping in Mandarin before you know it. See him live at Zone One at Elsewhere on 03.09.

Weekend Warrior, February 23 – 25

Posted on:

Wish You Hadn’t, the debut EP from Corey Flood, is out today via Fire Talk, and tonight, the quartet, featuring Ivy Gray-Klein (Littler), Em Boltz, Noah Jacobson-Carroll, and Juliette Rando, will be celebrating its release at Planet Phitness. An ominous exposure permeates throughout the album. An intriguing textural dynamic is created as the somewhat soft-spoken/sung, isolated internalizations are surrounded by a shadowy, pre-dawn, sonic darkness. That solemn stir of uncertainty still retains accessibility. This evening, they’ll be joined by the dichotomy of chaotic, combustible noise meets clairvoyance of Empath, and balancing the floating ascension of melody with grounded grungey aggression, the trio of Eight hovers. This local lineup is rounded out by the in-your-face, menacing punk of Preen. – Michael Colavita

New Ada Babar LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Uncompromising in its ability to clash yet sound fabulous, Ada Babar‘s Leaked is an imagistic mesh of warped, labyrinthine rhythms, canned sound effects, and heady bedroom production. The intricacies and folds within any particular song on the album are plentiful; each track a tightly wound spring. However, if someone listened closely, they could locate a seat in the center of the action. There’s something peaceful about Babar’s vision, even when hurtling past at a high speed – like a tiny astrologer living inside a hard drive, placidly gazing up into a stream of luminescent data whirring off into the night sky. – Josh Kelly

New Track: “Devoted” – Exmaid

Posted on:

Miranda Taylor (Black Wine, Full of Fancy, Hunchback) unites with the trio of Psychic Teens to form Exmaid. On April 6, the quartet will release its debut LP Fair Sex via SRA Records and Don Giovanni. With its lead single, “Devoted,” Taylor sings of switching gears, as an enthusiastic, battering-ram riff clears an opening of possibility; it’s bright with a brutal edge. And on Saturday, April 21, Long In the Tooth will be hosting the band’s record release show with Dialer.

Burger-A-Go-Go’s back with more non-male love

Posted on:

Burger Records is more than just the SoCal-based label dominated by scruffy ruffians shotgunning beers all the time. A first glance at not only their extensive roster but the typical scene flooding their festivals and gatherings would appear to make that the truest statement about the label. But it isn’t. For the last four years the label has specifically curated an event catering to the promotion of bands, groups and solo artists where one or all of the members are non-male identifying. That event is called Burger-A-Go-Go, and it’s awesome.

Now, using "female-fronted" or any iteration of the sort as a selling point for anything is pretty played out and low-key offensive, but in this case, it works within the context. Femmes haven’t been well celebrated in the realm of music or anything else throughout history nearly enough as they should, but for the next two nights, Burger is doing a little bit to quell that in Portland.

Sentimental garage-pop act Patsy’s Rats will be holding it down on the local front and sharing the stage with a grip of punk, garage and dream pop acts, like The Coathangers, Death Valley Girls, Summer Twins, and much delight from Dengue Fever, who dish out psych-pop with a Cambodian Rock flair, among others.

Tickets for Burger-A-Go-Go will run you anywhere from $20-$35, but it’s well worth it to see a bunch of acts that aren’t what the music industry considers the "standard."

Santa Cruz’s Marty O’Reilly releases folksy ‘Stereoscope’ LP

Posted on:

In Santa Cruz-based Marty O’Reilly’s most recent LP Stereoscope, he takes Americana to another level, blending delicate violin arrangements with bluesy vocals and soulful harmonies to create something startlingly beautiful. The dynamic songwriting of O’Reilly—who is always joined by bandmates Chris Lynch, Ben Berry, and Matt Goff—takes the listener by surprise, as he breaks out of the tropes of his genre that would otherwise restrict such progression. The opening track “Firmament” (streaming below) offers a glimpse into the rest of the album, which is a complicated and well-crafted addition to a genre whose fans constantly think they have finally ‘seen it all.’ Marty O’Reilly and his band are currently on a cross-country tour and will be heading down to SXSW this year. – Lilly Milman

Oakland dreamraver PASTEL GHOST heads to SXSW

Posted on:

Oakland-based artist PASTEL GHOST is a synth-pop artist with a shoegazer’s agenda—a combination not often found in the electronica scene. Operating under a genre that she calls “dreamrave,” her music is ethereal and elusive. Her single “POSSESSION” (streaming below) is just one example of how she layers her slippery vocals over driving synth beats to create a seductive and mysterious sound unlike any other. Effortlessly cool and complex, PASTEL GHOST is definitely one to keep an eye on as she works on recording and releasing a follow-up LP to her debut project, ABYSS. She will be making her way down to SXSW this year, with a showcase on March 15th. – Lilly Milman
