Recalling a dream, a youthful jangle permeates in "Nosebleed," the latest single from Borzoi Boy. Instrumentally aided by Vincent Joseph Knauf, the song coasts in a bedroom-pop search. An internal monologue spills out in light-level melody. You can catch Borzoi Boy at Hole Foods this Friday, February 16 with Yung Sham, Cooking, and David Attias.
Weekend Warrior, February 9 – 11
This Sunday, The Sound Hole stretches the standard sonic boundaries. Taiwan Housing Project tears into noise-laced, sorcery-stemming punk angst, peppered in free-jazz notes. That chaotic hybrid churns along the rails, casting a post-apocalyptic storm, while teetering on the edge of destruction that naturally rights itself. Jason Killinger (Spacin’, Birds of Maya) locks into down and dirty riff-tastic rock, turning down strange alleys of ambiance that orchestrate an odd, endless, space boogie. Kevin Nickles (Taiwan Housing Project, Ecstatic Vision) and Daniel Provenzano (Spacin’, Purling Hiss), a.k.a. The Writhing Squares, tie together this lineup. There’s a heavy, burrowing, instrumental drive that moves with an insatiable exploratory appetite into deep space, incorporating an array of instrumentation that’s progressive with a primal core. Louisville, Kentucky’s Tropical Trash fits nicely into this assembly of eclectic, experimenting music makers. – Michael Colavita

Noise rock group Kármán Voh release pulsing new EP “If Only Apart”
Boston experimental group Kármán Voh have released If Only Apart, the fuzzy, pulsing follow up to October’s Ill Loam. If Only Apart displays the cavernous nuances of post-rock and shoegaze, wherein each song envelops its listener in a haze of warm distortion, steady rhythms, and abstract, yet melodic vocal concepts. It’s difficult not to draw comparisons to My Bloody Valentine, or even contemporaries like Deerhunter, but at their core, Kármán Voh draw from a darker, more deeply personal space than their influences. Dive into If Only Apart below. -Charley Ruddell
New The Guests Album Available for Streaming & Purchase
Popular Music, the new album from The Guests, is now available for streaming and purchase. The serious presence of baritone vocals is folded into loose, progressing, new-wave grooves. Blending ominous warnings with jangly wanderings, these songs engage with pensive lyricism, while retaining an intense danceability. The Guests will holding their record release celebration this evening at Voltage Lounge, with DJs Nightwitch, Strykk-9, and Shari Vari.
BAERD release challenging new single “If All Goes As Planned”
Following the release of “Out Of The” in late 2017, Boston folk collective BAERD have returned with a sonically ambitious new single titled “If All Goes As Planned”. BAERD, fronted by singer/guitarist Isaiah Baerd, have a penchant for composing progressive, and often times challenging neo-folk music, evocative of modern new wave folk bands like Fleet Foxes and Sufjan Stevens. “If All Goes As Planned” plays out as more of a score than a song, jumping between mixed meters and instrumental swells accompanying Baerd’s whimsical growl. Both “Out Of The” and “If All Goes As Planned” are featured singles from BAERD’s forthcoming full length album Crete, due to arrive this Summer. Check out “If All Goes As Planned” below. -Charley Ruddell
Deli NYC Premiere: Alexia Bomtempo’s video for “I Thought About You”
In 2016, we named Alexia Bomtempo one of NYC’s top emerging artists. Late last year, Bomtempo released her third studio album, called Chasing Storms and Stars, and we are happy to premiere the first music video for the track "I Thought About You". The stripped-down song features Alexia’s frank vocal delivery and Brazilian-inspired beats fused with American soul. In the video, Bomtempo’s fluxing expressions — some projected over her blank face, some shown raw — convey the power behind her simple but beautiful music and lyrics. And to add more emphasis to the simplicity of the whole package, the video makes expert use of black and white. See it for yourself — and take a listen to "I Thought About You" — below. Alexia Bontempo will perform live at The 55 Bar on February 13. – Will Sisskind
Song Premiere: Josefina “Starry Dome”
We are proud to premiere the title track, “Starry Dome”, from the debut album from Josefina.
Josefina Asconapé is a Buenos Aires-born singer/songwriter now based here in Chicago. She blends beautifully lush vocals with a unique take on Alt-Country and Folk production.
You can help Josefina celebrate the record release (and her birthday!) with a free show at The Whistler tomorrow night, Feb. 10th, with Andrew Pelletier of Minor Characters.
Harry Teardrop premieres dream pop “Chinatown” single
Harry Teardrop makes the kind of hazy, daydream-inducing bedroom pop that you can get lost in. New single “Chinatown” is no exception, but it works the smooth, jazzy undertones to more soothing ends. Teardrop—a.k.a. NYU student Harrison Li—crafts indie music that’s unafraid to be pop and, in this case, unafraid to be ‘80s style romantic. Originally written for Li’s senior prom as a slow dancing song for his band to play, “Chinatown” is a lo-fi ballad with nonchalant cool. Listen below and be sure to catch Harry Teardrop opening for Dolly Spartans on February 11th at Trans-Pecos. –Cameron Carr</p>
New Greg Mendez LP Available for Streaming & Purchase
Greg Mendez just released his first full band album, & Gum Trash, backed by Evan Bernard (The Superweaks), Ian Farmer (Modern Baseball, Slaughter Beach, Dog), and Cody Wren (Decent). Contagious, concise instrumentation attaches to personally-connecting lyrics, tying the listener into the narratives. The recordings welcome you into a new, musical house, which soon feels like a friendly, familiar home. This Sunday, February 11, Boot & Saddle will be hosting Mendez’s record release show, where he’ll be support by Shannen Moser, Neil O’Neil, and Queen Jesus. (Photo by SJ Penchenski)
Holy Pink reach for cosmic transcendence on “Fragrant”
An overwhelming sense of isolation surrounds your every fiber on "Fragrance." The duo of Anna Wallace and Timothy Murray create a spacious atmosphere that’s both eerie and spectral, where a pulsating synthesizer swings to and fro over a muted, languid drone. It’s not until Wallace tries to host the transmission via a vocoder that we understand how "Fragrance" is more than just instrumental ambiance. It never quite goes where you think it’ll take you, as it’s enveloped with a sonic richness that induces one into a state of perpetual meditation.
"Fragrance" is the first reveal off of the duo’s forthcoming record, Meditation Hymns for an Electronic Age, which is due out later this Spring. – Juan Rodríguez
Secret Crush brings fuzz-soaked indie rock to Elsewhere 02.12
While Secret Crush’s music clearly comes with heavy debts to shoegaze, the band’s incorporation of indie rock immediacy gives them an added dimension. With guitars covered in fuzz and dripping reverb, there’s still plenty of the trademark shoegaze wash of sound, but the vocals tend to sit more upfront and there’s a tendency toward riffing that’s rarely seen in the genre. For fans of moody, effects-laden music, Secret Crush offers an excellent gateway to the more experimental corners of the shoegaze world. Get a taste of that sound when the band headlines Elsewhere on February 12th.
Grand Analog – “Mutations” Video, Playin’ The Drake 02.23
Grand Analog band leader Odario Williams describes their sound as “A beautiful mess of rap n’ roll, dub and soul.” Personally I find most new hip hop to be hard to listen to but these guys are a true band who have the skill to play instruments, write smart tunes and lay down a bouncin’ beat when that’s what needs to be done. Their latest video “Mutations” takes you through a day in the life of a 14 year old boy as he searches for manhood. This sounds like a classic hip hop tune. The beat is old school and quite honestly its bang on. The De La Soul influence is obvious as it features Posdnuos. Really diggin’ these fellas. They will be heading to SXSW this year. Go see em before they go at The Drake Underground on February 23rd. – Kris Gies
