Goodie (aka Phyllis Lee) is a breath of fresh air in the folk/songwriter scene. For one, the traditional acoustic guitar parts are all replaced with electric, and she’s not afraid to try out slightly avant chord progressions and go all out with supporting drums and bass. There’s a lightness to the songs, partly because the sparsity of the DIY arrangement, but there is genuine power and confidence in Lee’s vocals. "Shopping Cart" is particularly ethereal and lyrically wise, with ghostly background vocals perched atop bass and drums, proving that Goodie is one to watch. -Geena Kloeppel
Post-punk supergroup Savak plays Alphaville 1.18
With the members’ resumes featuring names like Nation of Ulysses, The Make-Up, Holy Fuck, Obits, and The Cops, Savak is an A-team of indie rock odd-balls, but the band’s music speaks for itself. Some moments come sharp with jagged edges and angular turns while others chime with rock ‘n’ roll jangle worthy of R.E.M. Savak’s 2017 album Cut-Ups shows the group flexing its creative muscle and making use of the members’ broad talents for a consistent but adventurous entry in the post-punk genre. The band will play it’s first gig of the year January 18th at Alphaville with The Effects, Patois Counselors, and Big Quiet. – Cameron Carr
“No Dogs Allowed” is the delightful new album from Boston’s Sidney Gish
Since her first release in 2015, Sidney Gish has put out four full length albums, an undeniably impressive feat for a 20 year old undergrad student at Northeastern University. Her latest album, the delightful No Dogs Allowed, is every bit as charming as her previous releases, but with a noticeable edge up on production, a task that Gish undertook single handedly. At its core, No Dogs Allowed rivals the songwriting prowess of any (Sandy) Alex G record, and shines with its endearing, twee characteristics, reminiscent of a signature K Records release. Gish could surely make Calvin Johnson crack a smile. -Charley Ruddell
Chief Perch Aims for the Future of Music
Airtight rhythms ebb and flow with beautiful vocal harmonies that shimmer with interspersed electronic bleeps and bloops. The Austin octet, Chief Perch, have an uncanny ability to tap into the dance-centric melodies that keep our fingers pressing play. Lead singer, Ariel Herrerra, has a Stefani-esque warble mixed with a classic R&B croon, and her charismatic stage presence is equally entrancing as it is hypnotic. Chief Perch has double the typical amount of band members, hence, they emit double the amount of funky fresh beats. Their debut album, Shoulda Would Coulda, was released in October of this past year, and is remarkable in its variety and quality of tracks.
Crosswalk Anarchy release long awaited, mind bending new album “Composite”
Crosswalk Anarchy somehow manage to stuff all of their influences into their music. With elements of out-jazz, angular prog, vibey hip-hop grooves, and new age fusion, the five piece fuse their diverse compositions together with grace and precision. Their newest release, a full length album titled Composite, is a mind bending, genre hopping journey, chocked full of deeply jagged grooves (courtesy of composer Evan Waaramaa) and transcendent highs peaks (driven by talented vocalist Songyi Jeon). Stream the album below. -Charley Ruddell
Pwndeleon offers up retro video game sounds with added funk
Pwndeleon creates a pleasing mix of retro video game aesthetics and conventional EDM beats on 8mb EP. Starfox with a little extra funk is the theme of this release, punctuated every so often by staple dubstep aggression.
Standing out throughout the release is Pwndeleon’s dedication to the tracks. Each track is well-crafted with enticing twists and turns. The tracks can be turned up for party music, or just put on low volume in the background while gaming.

New Track: “California Dreamin” (The Mamas & The Papas Cover) – Japanese Breakfast
In the midst of this deep freeze, one may be eyeing warmer climates. In that vein, Japanese Breakfast recently re-imagined The Mamas & The Papas’ classic “California Dreamin” as part of a SiriusXMU session. This take hauntingly awakens, accompanied by synth, before the beat hits. Then, a sleek groove takes over, and vibrant guitar sets it off as the warmth and reassurance of vocal harmony warms the soul. Japanese Breakfast is scheduled to return to Philly on Sunday, June 3 at Union Transfer.
Pale Lights release video for latest single “Jean, Bring The Flowers”
Brooklyn’s sparkle-indie group Pale Lights ended 2017 on a productive note with the release of their LP The Stars Seemed Brighter, which has gained a good amount of praise since its unveiling. Frontman and songwriter Phil Sutton delivers poetic lyrics over Andy Adler’s mellifluous guitar and Lisa Goldstein’s subtle drums, while Suzanne Nienaber provides the summery harmonies in the background. That sunny feeling comes through in the music video for "Jean, Bring The Flowers" (streaming), a homemade four-minute capture of impromptu backyard jams while relaxing with friends in the sunshine. While you wait for the winter cold to pass, warm your ears and eyes with the video for "Jean, Bring The Flowers" below. – Will Sisskind
New Earth to Violet EP Available for Streaming & Download
Kelly Green, a.k.a. Earth to Violet, recently issued a fresh batch of bedroom-folk. Stranger incisively evaluates in a self-deprecating sincerity. A looming desire to change hovers overhead, as the hearth-crackling keys and percussion makes one feel at home. It’s difficult to move forward when the familiarity of routine and the past serve as a blanket to the cold world outside.
A record we missed in 2017: Lexie (side project of Frankie Cosmos and Warehouse)
Lexie is a collaboration between NYC’s bedroom pop chanteuse Frankie Cosmos and two members of Atlanta’s Indie Rockers Warehouse (Alex Bailey and Doug Bleichner). The trio quietly released this side project’s 8 track debut “Record Time” in June of 2017. The album, recorded with Carlos Hernandez of Ava Luna, lives up to both band’s past achievements, although it’s obviously more skewed towards Greta Kline’s intimate pop format. Those who are in desperate need of new material after enjoying 2016’s sublime "Next Thing" should check it out. – Cameron Carr, photo by Sarah Cass
Wine Lips – “Opera Ghost” Music Video
One of my favorite records of 2017 was from Toronto garage trio Wine Lips. The whole album is great front to back with wild guitar and a thumpin rhythm section that’ll keep ya groovin’. They nail the fuzzy garage tones while keepin’ the tunes catchy enough to appeal to more than just fuzzheads. In their video for “Opera Ghost” the band is competing against each other in a hot dog eating contest which looks a good time. Watch out…it gets messy. Celebrate guitarist/vocalist Cam’s birthday at the Bovine Sex Club on January 13th where Wine Lips will be joined by Séance Sisters and Possum. – Kris Gies
Greenhouse – New Single, Shoegazin’ at Hard Luck Bar 01.13
This Toronto based shoegaze band Greenhouse has just dropped a brand new single. “Acetate” has a peaceful beginning with Sunday afternoon vibes during the 90’s indie rock inspired verse. The band fires up the instrumentation for the chorus but keep the droning vocals that adds a nice contrast to the music. If the Smashing Pumpkins went full shoegaze it might sound like Greenhouse. They play live in Toronto at Hard Luck Bar on January 13th along with Tijuana Taxi and the Spiracles. – Kris Gies
