Every Little Thought, the forthcoming album from Hurry, will be released on February 23 via Lame-O Records. Directed by Brendan McHugh (Everyone Everywhere), the video for “Waiting For You,” which was shot at Philadelphia Horticultural Center, finds the band perusing the plants as well as performing. A pensive plot of isolation, perpetuated by persistent phone use, is both relatable, and hints at a need to change. Hurry is scheduled to perform at Everybody Hits tonight, with Wildhoney, Glitterer, Empath, and Knifeplay.
MISSIONS set forth on an inner adventure on “Stay Gone”
MISSIONS are in search for their inner purpose on "Stay Gone." The Echo Park trio immerse themselves in some musical references that may sound familiar, which range from traditional Mexican folk music to tensely-coiled post-punk, to create a sound that’s truly all their own. "And if I can’t find my way back / I might as well stay gone," sings Christopher Clark with strong conviction, a simple declaration that’s magnified by a victorious chant that makes his absence all the more felt.
"Stay Gone" is the lead-off track off of MISSIONS’ latest self-titled EP, which they recently unveiled with a release show at the Satellite last week. Here’s the video for the track below. Juan Rodríguez
Buzz Alert: Torres’ video of “Skim” makes The Guardian’s Best of 2017 List
Torres‘ musical path could be used as an ideal example of what should happen to a musician who dares to move from Nashville to NYC – something she did in 2015, soon after releasing her sophomore album Sprinter. Her 2017 follow up, Three Futures, reveals a more daring artist with an uber-edgy sound that makes abundant use of synths and guitar pedals. The tracks share a claustrophobic atmosphere that seems like an unavoidable by-product of the transition from the big spaces of Music City to the "coziness" of the Big Apple. The labels took notice (the album was out on legendary 4AD), the critics applauded (Three Futures is one of the top-ranked albums on Metacritic.com with a score of 79) and the fans multiplied. And more recently, the UK newspaper The Guardian included the video for Skin (streaming below) in its Best of 2017 list. Since the release, Torres has been gigging non-stop in the US, Canada and Europe.
Dirty Bird bring their orchestral folk to #WomenCrush at Rockwood 1/31
Dirty Bird’s latest single, "Towers," will catch you off-guard. "Towers" is a juicy, upbeat indie folk tune with a striking, purposeful arrangement and stellar vocal harmonies. Melodically, instrumentally, and vocally, this band is getting everything right. The recording is so delightful that I’m intrigued to hear them bring their music to life on the stage. You can catch them live as part of the #WomenCrush NYC showcase, an organization that provides opportunities for rising female artists in the music industry, at Rockwood Music Hall on January 31st. –Geena Kloeppel
New Music Video: “Lima Beans” – Secret Nudist Friends
Featured on their EP Susan, Secret Nudist Friends recently shared a video for the single, “Lima Beans”. Shot at Tralfamadore, the band invites one to step inside, sit down, and have a beverage. That, coupled with up-close performance footage, captures a hazy, garage-psych atmosphere. Secret Nudist Friends are slated on a billing tonight at Kung Fu Necktie that will include Gender Work, Kelsey Cork & The Swigs, and The Smirks. They will also be presenting their first official music video at Good How Are You #2, a local artist showcase being held next Thursday, January 18 at Tralfamadore.
A Deli Premiere: “Independence Day” by Forest Bees
Sheetal Singh knows what it’s like to fall apart and have to pick up the pieces again. After her previous band—early 2000s San Francisco indie darlings The Stratford 4—fell apart, she returned to school and even started her own family. Now, she’s returned to music in the form of a new project called Forest Bees—an indie electronica act with intensely feminist overtures. Today, The Deli has the privilege of premiering the opening track “Independence Day” (streaming below) off of the forthcoming self-titled debut EP. The track explores Singh’s experience as a wife and as a woman, which are themes that reoccur throughout the rest of the EP. The rest of the record will be released on January 25th at The Hemlock. – Lilly Milman
Debut Night Bloom EP Available for Streaming
Night Bloom begin their new year right with the debut of Luv HZ. The EP is delicately groovy, an homage to lo-fi sensibilities and R&B emotionality. To put it plainly, Night Bloom is chill. The Philly-based duo can effortlessly evoke something akin to laidback SoCal whimsy; however, their music is excitingly fresh and entirely their own. Let the luv wash over you. – Amanda Ogea
Record of the Month: Standing on the Corner – Red Burns
It’s hard to place a firm finger on Standing on the Corner’s latest album, a 60 minute, two-track release entitled Red Burns, but the record – which opens with warm crackling, synth-y harp strums, and omnipotent narration treated with the kind of vocal distortion that sounds as if your cassette’s brown tapes have melted – is wildly innovative, and strangely mesmerizing. The project, headed by Gio Escobar and Jasper Marsalis, a Crown Heights based duo armed with a jazz background and an interest in rap and electronica, is a response to recent political and nationwide events, chronicling them with the distinctive viewpoint of those facing direct oppression, but expressing them through a medium that is widely freeform and experimental. New Track: “Happy New Year” – Mark Lanky
A few days ago, Mark Lanky released a new 3-song EP. Its title track, “Happy New Year,” is an open letter, reaching out to someone disconnected from a previous relationship. Casually moving down the road on the compact bass-n-drum vehicle with the whine of pedal steel filling the gaps, Lanky’s lingering sadness/regret resonates. He’ll be pouring his heart out this evening at Ortlieb’s on a split a billing with Sad Actor.
Milhouse – Toronto Math Rock Duo!
Ah Milhouse…my favorite Simpsons character. Of course a band named after Milhouse would need to have a slight sense of geekiness to them. So here is Milhouse – a two piece math rock duo from Toronto. Edna Krabapple would be proud. They have an EP available now featuring the tune “Blood & Bathrust.” An instrumental jam with slick guitar licks, wild drum techniques and all the mathy time signatures you could ask for. See it all for yourself live on January 28th at Bovine Sex Club. – Kris Gies
The Deli LA Premieres: Herbert Bail Orchestra, “Chains” (Video)
The joy and anguish of growing up is captured beautifully on Herbert Bail Orchestra’s video for their latest single, "Chains." The Anthony Frattolillo-directed video, who is also the main songwriter of the group, follows the story of a young boy as he experiences significant life events with careful nuance, an attentive close-up into its subject matter with a warm sense of empathy. "Chains" is also a natural progression for the ten-piece ensemble, as it employs a gentle roots rock feel that’s finely tailored with an attention to craft and collaboration.
"Chains" can be found on Herbert Bail Orchestra’s second full-length effort, History’s Made at Night. The group will be celebrating the release with an album release show at The Satellite tomorrow, January 11. Juan Rodríguez
Folk-pop duo Loveangelists inspire with uplifting ballads at Neck of the Woods (1/25)
In a DIY scene that often acts as a caricature of angst, anger, and disinterest, indie folk pop duo Loveangelists are fighting back by killing with kindness. The duo, made up of songwriters Nathan Dennen and Lisa Young, specialize in light, melodic ballads about empowerment. They seek to uplift with their music, with lyrics about loving more openly and coming together to make change—a message that comes across through supple harmonies and acoustic riffs. The Oakland duo just kicked off 2018 with a show at Hotel Utah, and are planning on playing more live shows as the year unwinds. Their next booked show at the moment is on January 25th at Neck of the Woods. – Lilly Milman
