Star Club bring a true “Nightmare” to life

Posted on:

Back when the weather and spirits alike were a bit brighter, we shared the first music video from art-wavers Star Club called "Saturday Night," along with a deeper look into the makes of the band and their late summer album Sixth Avenue Motel. We’re now pleased to share the latest to come from the album, a music video for the smoothly loungy track "Nightmare."

Monochrome and wonderfully shot, the video for "Nightmare" creatively evokes the horror of how nightmares can feel so much like reality. In it, vocalist/guitarist Nate Lown is somewhat the cool, cornfield narrator hanging back as bassist Marcus Pizotchi is kidnapped and taken to a desolate location where some procedures are performed on him. If you’ve ever dreamt of some sort of Taken-meets-Saw situation the thought of this actually happening is terrifying, but at least Star Club make it look moody and cool.

See Star Club perform "Nightmare" and other songs off of Sixth Avenue Motel tomorrow headlining the Turn Turn Turn with a debut set from Martha Stax (members of Star Club, Rare Diagram, Ancient Elk and more), Wave Action and Oort. Also, send some birthday love to Pizotchi.

Visual Vices: Sex Park – “Rhyme or Reason”

Posted on:

Post-punk duo Sex Park have remained relatively under the radar with how much they project themselves into the spotlight, but that by no means intimates they aren’t deserving of the limelight. In just the two years they’ve existed the darkwave faction are quickly positioning themselves highly amongst their local contemporaries. With formerly their self-titled debut to offer insight into their creations, they’re back at it again with a new video as another teaser to a new album.

"Rhyme or Reason" is the second track to come off their early 2018 full length Atrium. The album was originally scheduled for summer of this year but instead the pair, made of Daniel Blumenthal on guitar and vocals and Paul Burkhart heading synths and drum machines, released one track from it titled "Dignity." To take the buzz a step further, Sex Park released the Dignity – Remixes, which consists of Lust Era, Nathan Stewart and Memory Clap Acid doing their renditions of the track.

"Rhyme or Reason" is where it’s at, though, especially its video. Its aesthetics are mistily on brand with the musical style typically proffers; images of static feedback, flowers and other indecipherable bits mirroring in mesmerizing scene sequences. The video is very easy to get lost in, as it seems will be the rest of Atrium.

Watch the visuals for "Rhyme or Reason" below, and be sure to catch Sex Park’s next show at Dante’s on 12.22 with Shadowhouse, The Secret Light and White Rooms.

Bad in Bed mirror their ache through classic cinema on “Stay”

Posted on:

Bad in Bed delve into the mournful depths of a troubling romance on "Stay." Led by Mary Kobayahi’s wholesome vocals, the three-piece follow her loving sentiment with a tender love ballad that lifts up the listener’s spirit with a cheerful effervescence. But the band takes it up a notch and concretize their presentational message on their latest video for "Stay," an ode to classic cinema that offers tiny pockets of imagery offset by performance shots. It’s an approach that fortifies Kobayashi’s  openly honest lyrics.

"Stay" is the first single off of Bad in Bed’s debut full-length album, ‘The Looks Department.’ It is currently available via their official bandcamp. Juan Rodríguez

Weekend Warrior, November 24 – 26

Posted on:

This Sunday, a congregation heads to the First Unitarian Church, celebrating the bounty of beautiful music that local imprint Lame-O Records has curated in its first 5 years. Jake Ewald’s Slaughter Beach, Dog creates a sense of melodic ease, whilst working through the humbling hurdles of day-to-day living, via thoughtful perspectives. Cutting directly to the core of emotions with songwriting spun out of sincerity, Shannen Moser establishes an inviting folk proximity, drawing one in with blankets of relatable harmonies that ache and simultaneously provide room to breathe and process. Fuzzily rekindling mementos of the past with a clean-slated set of eyes, Cherry is freshly familiar, while No Thank You brings the tangle of guttural pensions to the surface, demonstrating a cathartic grit. They’ll also be pre-partying in the Side Chapel with a pop-up acoustic show that will feature "Lame-O and friends". Congrats to Eric Osman and the Lame-O family! – Michael Colavita

Booming bass beats set the stage for A Matter Of Time, the new EP from Sean Valy x BASA of the YK Collective. Contemplating the right moves on the path to success, the emcees express their fears yet manage to push forward with their inner confidence shining through. Circling back to a 90’s sonic foundation, the duo allows the simplicity of the beats to serve as a springboard. That dramatic roll with the bouncing narrative is personal and powerful.

Hnry Flwr drops new video for “As Above, So Below”

Posted on:

Hnry Flwr is back with a new video for his track "As Above, So Below." With his signature spidery makeup framing his poker-face vocal delivery, Hnry Flwr traverses multiple outdoor landscapes before cutting to footage of deer, altars and other heavily allegorical imagery that the song’s title may imply. The result is a dark, challenging clip that’s well worth multiple watches. Check out the video streaming below.-Olivia Sisinni

Jean Daddy – “Let’s Ride Boys!”

Posted on:

Toronto’s rock n’ roll enigma Jean Daddy have released a brand new record. They are one of the more unique bands in the area right now with their most recent release prior to this record being a comic book. They are known for their charisma on stage and these fellas can really bring it. As Jean Daddy says they “put the rock in raucous.” Very accurate statement with their dirty garage guitars, driving rhythms and frantic vocals. Their release party goes down Friday November 24 at the Baby G along with Vypers and BBQ Pope. Let’s Ride Boys! – Kris Gies

Haunting new dream folk project Panteon drops video for “White Jaguar”

Posted on:

Panteon (aka Yvonne Ambree) writes soft, haunting indie folk tunes that  linger long after the music stops. Her new EP, Travel Log 1, (out January 19th) documents her world travels through music. In anticipation of the release, the Brooklyn-based artist has dropped a video for single "White Jaguar." The video showcases dream-like visuals that compliment the haziness of Panteon’s music, and keeping in theme with the EP, the song was developed after a visit to Columbia’s Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta–offering an impressionistic view of the indigenous KOGI peoples. Stream White Jaguar below, and check out Panteon at Rockwood Music Hall 1/28.-Olivia Sisinni
