Fits Debut Album at Alphaville 11.17

Posted on:

Fits stay true to their name with their especially short songs, each one bursting into the limelight with compelling and near-addicting guitar riffs. It’d be too easy for a band to get lost in the music, but Fits know just when to end a song early enough to cause a craving for more. Fits’ penchant for brevity (as well as quirky humor) keeps the themes of their upcoming LP “All Belief is Paradise,” themes of queer identity in the shadow of grief and disillusioned meditations on childhood, from being too overwhelming. Instead, the music is refreshingly sincere. Celebrate the LP’s release with Fits at Alphaville on 11.17.  —Amanda Ogea

We added this song to The Deli’s playlist of Best songs by emerging NYC artists – check it out!

New Music Video: “Sun Drop” – Vita and the Woolf

Posted on:

Via Out Of Town Films, Vita and the Woolf released a new video for “Sun Drop”. Filmed at South Philly’s Bok building, the footage jumps between the hauntingly elegant dance of Lauren Williams and Hillary Pearson (choreographed by Antonia Z Brown) and Jennifer Pague’s rooftop contemplations. The imagery captures a lasting duality of beauty and despair. Vita and the Woolf are slated to headline at Johnny Brenda’s on Friday, October 2 with Ellen Siberian Tiger and Soul Cannon. Blonde Maze returns with a new single and EP

Posted on:

New York’s electric pop artist, Blonde Maze is the project of self-produced Amanda Steckler whose sound is anchored on a dreamy blend of woven piano, electronic marimbas and layered vocal harmonies. Her newest single ‘Thunder’ is a translucent dive into melodic bliss that needs only a repeat button. Her 2015 debut EP ‘Oceans’ was very well received, going to #18 on Spotify’s ‘US Viral’ chart, and receiving attention from MTV’s ‘Radar’, and BBC Radio 1 among other channels. She is currently armed with a new and improved material, and another EP slated for 2018 release. – Vernon McGhee

Eric Anders denounces the current state of affairs on “This Fire Has Burned too Long”

Posted on:

It’s hard to not look away from all increasing absurdity of our current political landscape. And theoretically, there’s not a lot that can be said within a song to possibly address such a vast concept, but it’s also a good start. Singer-songwriter Eric Anders’s latest single, "This Fire Has Burned too Long," is a fiery, yet calm statement with a rustic Americana sound that inspires a feeling of reflective melancholy. It’s a fitting anthem for our trying times, one that keeps a tinge of optimism even when it unapologetically calls out the sheer lack of tact that plagues our social discourse.

"This Fire Has Burned too Long" can be found on Anders’s latest full-length, Eleven Nine, which was released earlier this year via his official bandcamp page. Juan Rodríguez

Fried Dough – “Fried-Day the 13th” at Smiling Buddha

Posted on:

Here’s something a little different…Fried Dough. Great name for this electronic-psych package. This four piece band blends all their favorite things…animals, music and horses…into a thumpin’ 10 minute epic package known as “French Cinema”. The beginning sounds like it should be the opening credits for an 80’s action movie. You just gotta listen to it and get lost. It’s like if Daft Punk were a jam band. Hearing them live with real instruments would be awesome. Fried Dough play this “Fried-Day” October 13th at the Smiling Buddha. – Kris Gies

Ryne Estwing from On and On has released a new single, “Timing/Carry On”, from his side project Louis. The tracks are darkly beautiful and filled hushed vocals and layered electronics and instrumentation. They were recorded in Minneapolis with a collection of musicians including DOSH, Jeremy Ylvisaker, and Mike Lewis. We are definitely looking forward to more from these sessions.

New Hotel Neon Remix Album Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

Today is the final day that proceeds from Hotel Neon‘s Context: Remixed will be donated to Direct Relief, which supports disaster assistance in Mexico, Texas, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean. Cleansing waves of reassuringly peaceful power push forward, as a sonic vortex circles the periphery. One’s mind gradually quiets down, reaching a meditative state. Focus in, and allow the conflicting layers to wash away.

New Video: “100%” (Sonic Youth Cover) – Cap’n Jazz & Hop Along

Posted on:

As part of the the A.V. Undercover series, a reunited Cap’n Jazz recently collaborated with Philly hometown heroes Hop Along at the House of Vans in Chicago. Covering Sonic Youth’s "100%," the tandem launches into a feedback-fueled, bass-thumping inferno of rhythm and noise. That juxtaposing blend of groove and jarring intensity creates a heavy yet fun dynamic. Dare you to play it just once.

Cape Francis snags the cover of Spotify’s Fresh Finds + Tops Deli Emerging Artists Chart

Posted on:

If an artist suddenly climbs our "NYC New Bands With Buzz" charts (look around on this page, you’ll find it), there’s always a reason. It happened this month to Brooklyn based dreamy songwriter Cape Francis, whose record release show we recently previewed in this very blog. In this circumstance, what pushed the project of Kevin Olken Henthorn to the top of that list is the fact that he made the cover of Spotify’s popular weekly playlist Fresh Finds (the playlist gets erased and updated weekly, so you won’t find Cape Francis in this week’s list of tracks). Congrats Kevin!

Cape Francis is scheduled to perform tonight in the East Village at Berlin and on November 10 at Bushwick’s C’Mon Everybody.

Grooms hosts Brooklyn Bazaar Release Show on 10.25

Posted on:

Returning with a fifth album set to further the band’s exploration of ambience and shoegazey guitar effects, Grooms brings the music to Brooklyn Bazaar on October 25. Lead singles from Exit Index showcase swelling synths amidst the moody wash of sound without straying from Grooms’ usual noisy fare. The band’s brigade of fuzz and other-worldly effects is ideal for live shows where the onslaught of guitar and drums crashes into you with the force of a brick wall. One of the few brick walls you should be excited to crash into. – Cameron Carr

New Track: “Fingernail Clipping of the Moon” – Johnny Showcase

Posted on:

You may or may not recognize David Sweeny as the charismatic sex machine that is Johnny Showcase. The multi-faceted performer is now teaming up with fellow Pig Iron Theatre Co. alum Sarah McCarron & Yuval Boim, and utilizing his various talents to make the South Philly-based indie film D.I.Y., a non-traditional rom-com where a queer-identified couple decides to plan an alternative wedding, clashing against the marriage industrial complex. “In a world where institutions are constantly changing, how do we define for ourselves what it means to commit to our most intimate relationships?”

Sweeny will be pulling double duty in the production’s lead role and as the film’s Music Director, and he just shared a breezy, new Johnny Showcase ditty, called “Fingernail Clipping of the Moon”. The lighthearted, ukulele-driven number will appear on the movie’s soundtrack, which will feature contributions from a variety of local musicians. The D.I.Y. folks are also currently involved in Seed&Spark’s Hometown Hero competition (which ends this Friday), and they could use your help to win a chance to work with the lauded Duplass Brothers. So give the gang some hometown love, and FOLLOW them HERE!
