New Track: “Time of Need” – Pill Friends
Hearing about the passing of Pill Friends‘ Ryan Wilson was quite a shock to us all here at The Deli. We were instant admirers of his biting, sardonic yet painstakingly truthful tunes, with both Blessed Suffering and Fade Into Nothing being chosen as our Record of Month for October 2013 and June 2014. However, more positive news recently appeared on Pill Friend’s Facebook page about the posthumous release of Let’s Be Nice, "a compilation of ryan/pill friends b-sides, covers and demos," which should be coming out soon. You can now stream the album’s heart-wrenching lead single, "Time of Need," below. <3
High Waisted share new music, tour US and play Rough Trade on 11/4
With the release of two new singles while embarked on an extensive U.S. tour, Brooklyn’s High Waisted look to expand their reach. Moving beyond the garage and surf rock beginnings, this newer material appears to take on a broader scope. “Free Throw” is an anxious chugger that expresses internal self-doubt. “Wish I couldn’t remember – the mistake I made. I’ll be better on my own.” Although recorded in NY, the Nashville touch on mixing and mastering adds a subtle level of country-pop sheen. “Firebomb” stomps harder with more prominent drums, crunchy rock guitars and Jessica’s sassy snarl lead vocals matched against dreamier background voices. Both tracks come paired with two others from current tour mates The Coax, available now on vinyl and digital from Little Dickman Records. Their current US tour has them playing nearly every night until early November before the band returns home on November 4th at Rough Trade. – Dave Cromwell
Debut Caracara LP Available for Streaming & Purchase
Square Peg Round Hole‘s Carlos Pacheco-Perez and Sean Gill have join forces with W.C. Lindsay‘s Will Lindsay and George Legatos to form Caracara. Moving from delicate, baroque compositions to more epic, post-rock crescendos and peaks, while still traversing the shadowier, more sensitive terrains of alt-rock/pop, the quartet’s diverse collection of tunes can all be found on the group’s debut LP Summer Megalith, which is now available via Flower Girl Records, the indie label of Sorority Noise’s Cam Boucher. Caracara will also be celebrating the album’s arrival this Wednesday, September 27 at Philly DIY space Everybody Hits with locals So Totally, Sixteen Jackies, and Atlanta’s World Greatest Dad. The Crowleys – “LA Sunset” New Single
Space-Pysch rockers The Crowleys have released a brand new single “LA Sunset”. The intro feels like you might be driving into a summer sunset as the jangly reverb guitars float along. They fade away and slowly hammer into a very groovy beat. This must be after the sunset and we’re hitting the streets lookin for a good time. It’s almost mixin’ in some disco which is a wicked combo alongside their usual garage vibes. Very cool tune with some interesting dynamics. The Crowleys just played the Night Owl Festival supporting Shannon & the Clams, next up for them is DIY festival Hollowfest in Lanark from September 29th to October 2nd. – Kris Gies
Eric Copeland releases “Goofballs” on DFA Records
Eric Copeland (also a member of Black Dice) just dropped his latest record, “Goofballs,” today. Copeland’s exploration of the dance genre is dazzling on “Goofballs.” “Neckbone” is a standout deconstruction and homage to the techno genre. “Close Encounters” cycles through tones, moods, genres, and rhythms but never falters. The names may be silly but the tracks bang. The same rebellious, curious spirit that characterizes Black Dice’s noise-influenced take on experimental rock shines through on “Goofballs.” And even more remarkable is how the record remains imminently melodic and danceable. –juan leon
No Regular Play perform (LIVE) at Baby’s All Right 09.30
What immediately comes through in a cursory survey of No Regular Play’s catalogue is a love for the jazz and hip-hop influences the DJ/production duo proudly claim. A Tribe Called Quest and Miles Davis can clearly be heard as influences, in deconstructed form, throughout the group’s single “Hear You Sing.” In fact, Rudists’ remix of “Hear You Sing” brings the connection to the forefront of the track. The results are undeniable. No Regular Play’s melding of nu-disco, house, R&B, and jazz creates something soulful and fresh. No Regular Play will be performing a live set at Baby’s All Right on September 30. -juan leon

Ian Chang Releases Debut Album at Baby’s All Right, 09.27
Ian Chang redefines what it means to be a drummer. Embarking on a solo-project aside from his work with Son Lux and Landlady, Chang focuses on bridging the gap between man and machine. He uses his drum-kit to manipulate music samples in order to weave music more dense and sensuous than perhaps otherwise possible, relying on crystalline polyrhythms to build and release tension. Experience Ian Chang at work when he releases his debut album “Spiritual Leader” at Baby’s All Right on 09.27. –Amanda Ogea
Weekend Warrior, September 22 – 24
Summertime has come and gone, and fall is upon us. However, those in need of some music therapy can hone in on one place, and make a two-day appointment. This Friday and Saturday, World Café Live hosts the succinctly named Philly Music & Arts Fest. Among the plethora of local artists canvassing both levels, the spellbinding free-floating melodies of Kississippi, the experimental existential-searching of Eric Slick, the serenading surges of Abi Reimold, the cruising, cosmic psych-pop of Ceramic Animal, and the infectious, rumbling emotives of Cayetana. The quintet of Tiny Hueman kicks off the affair on Saturday afternoon with the endearing open-book of Dominic continuing down the line. Familiarity meets futuristic in the groove-spiraling, psych folk of Pine Barons. Exploring personal depths with a robust energetic push, Sports instantly adheres. And the episodic, comforting narratives of Slaughter Beach, Dog and the candidly soulful hip-hop, hybrid observations of Ivy Sole serves as a snapshot of a lineup that offers a solid sampling of the litany of artistic excellence within our city. – Michael Colavita
