Black Belt Eagle Scout opens up with ‘Mother of My Children’ debut

The name Katherine Paul may or may not ring any bells. As a musician, Paul has contributed to other Portland acts like Genders and Forest Park, but Paul’s recent output as Black Belt Eagle Scout is of particular noteworthiness.

She doesn’t necessarily fancy herself a songwriter, but what she’s poured into the songs on her sophomore album Mother of My Children speaks otherwiseto her abilities. Queer and indigenous as part of the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community of just outside Anacortes, Washington, Paul was already equipped with intriguing stories and experienes to tell. Once she was hit with a couple losses, Paul had even more emotional material.

“It’s about my best friend. We dated for a really long time, and I thought she was gonna be the mother of my children, quite literally," Paul told Seattle’s The Stranger. "And so this past year, I just realized that was never going to happen… I had to let go.”

This, paired with the loss of a dear friend and mentor, bred Mother of My Children. Its songs are cathartic and put together with a particular beautiful sadness. Paul played every instrument herself, from the free Casio that gave"Keyboard" its tunes, to every participating unit that created the loud crashing of "Just Lie Down."

Everything about Mother of My Children is tender and vulnerable, while still possessing a captivating energy. Stream it below.

Quarter in the Bag – Playin’ Friday Night at This Aint Hollywood

Posted on:

This Hamilton trio has had a busy summer playing the Festival of Friends and Dundas Cactus Festival among other various gigs throughout the province. Quarter in the Bag also released their debut self titled EP. They’re a heavy and groovy power trio. The opening track “Underdog” is a rippin’ tune that’ll get your head bangin and mouth hummin’ the riff for days to come. The hectic breakdown will have you flippin’ tables immediately…respectfully of course. You can see Quarter in the Bag live in Hamilton at This Ain’t Hollywood on Friday September 15th along with Flamingo Bay, the Rickaneers and the Beach Bats. – Kris Gies

God Tiny Drops new video for “Awaken,” plays Mercury on 09.23

Posted on:

There is nothing small about God Tiny‘s sound: the Brooklyn-based psych/garage rockers serve up frenetic, down-and-dirty rock action, and their new video for single, "Awaken," perfectly deliver that action and that dirt on a visual level. The black-and-white work features a female protagonist, roaming the streets and taking names and is chocks full of the vintage vibes, visceral kicks and (literal) punches that we’ve come to love from the band. The clip is a real treat, and seeing such a gutsy, raw, and fun visual accompaniment to God Tiny’s music is something we never knew we needed, but we’re not sure if we could now live without. Check out "Awaken" streaming below, and catch the band live at The Mercury Lounge (where we’re sure they’ll be taking some names of their own) on 9/23. – Olivia Sisinni

Nashville Under-the-Radar Emo: PORTSMOUTH

Posted on:

The solo act out of Nashville, PORTSMOUTH, brings down an avalanche of sentimental reflection with lyricism that speaks from experience. Intricate rhythmic guitar, chock full of ornate suspensions and hammer-ons, beautifully compliment the artist’s subtly ambient, yet commanding, vocals. Popular emo themes of loss, past mistakes, and the never-ending search for self-improvement are beautifully embellished with spaced vocal phrasing that often builds to hard hitting choruses. Do yourself a favor and throw some PORTSMOUTH songs into you "in my feels" playlist for maximum self-empathy, and look out for upcoming shows around the Nashville area. – Michael Simpson

Debut Mary Veils LP Available for Streaming & Purchase

Posted on:

As the summer fades into mere memory, The Mary Veils, the lo-fi, psych vehicle of Brian Von Uff, rears its gnarly head with Slacker Paint. Low-and-slow, smoke-saturated songs retain their flavor, accented by raw, surf tones. Through the haze of fuzz-laced guitar riffs, the vocals leak through, as a seemingly lackadaisical, calming presence. In the midst of those fire-under-ones-feet grooves and swells, a roaring, untamed blaze of instrumentation waits to engulf at any moment, which makes for a surprisingly most excellent debut.

NYC mad psych rockers Worthless announce release of ‘Barrel of Barrows’ LP

Posted on:

Life’s A Garden and Soil It are the commanding titles of NYC-based Worthless’ latest album and opening track. In this coy contradiction, Worthless introduces us to the play of their extreme, vintage sounding, "scary-clown" inspired psychedelia. With fun-house organs, clattering mallets, and the occasional whiny vocal harmonies, the band embraces anything strange and confusing. After nine album releases on their stacked bandcamp, another record full of ideas and experimentation, entitled "Barrel of Barrows" is set for an October 6th release on label Beyond Beyond is Beyond. Their name maybe be worthless, but their repertoire of music speaks otherwise.

New Track: “Socialize” – Family Volleyball

Posted on:

“Socialize,” the new single from Family Volleyball, floats in the lush daydream of an eternal summer. The drifting vocal/guitar action is countered by the grounded snapback of percussion. Then, roughly a third of the way through, a unified instrumental push emerges from the laidback tones, propelling the surf-jangle to its noise-ridden conclusion. (Photo by Ty Alana)

Dark Satellite’s chilling post hardcore

Posted on:

We have an intriguing two-song demo to share with you guys released back in April from SF’s Dark Satellite. The post-rock demo begins with a brilliant incorporation of Charlie Chaplin’s iconic speech from The Great Dictator, fusing it with hardcore noise-rock buildup, ultimately unleashing into "La Valette", a mostly instrumental track with screechy math and post-hardcore influences. Check out the band’s work below and keep an eye out for upcoming shows. The band recently also unveiled a video for track "A Star is Dying" – watch it here.- Pearse Devlin

UMFANG on the Main Stage at Sustain-Release 09.16

Posted on:

Bronx-born, Kansas-bred, Brooklyn-living Emma Olson (aka UMFANG) will be closing out the main stage this coming Saturday at Sustain-Release in Upstate New York. It’s the fourth edition of the festival, which takes place at Camp Kennybrook, and features a wide swathe of underground NYC and global artists. Techno is well represented at Sustain-Release this year and UMFANG — co-founder of NYC collective DISCWOMAN — is a worthy representative to top off a 12-plus hour main-stage marathon of the dreamy, the soft, and the hard, but above all, the electronic. UMFANG’s latest release, Symbolic Use of Light, debuted via Technicolour Recordings (a Ninja Tune imprint) in June of this year.

Symbolic Use of Light offers a conceptual balance of heavy and soft. Track titles like "Full 1," "Full 2," and "Weight" share space with "Sweep," and "Wingless Victory." The ideas cohere wonderfully within UMFANG’s at times aggressive, at times tender sonic landscape. Nowhere is this more striking and thrilling than in the one-two punch transition of "Path" immediately followed by "Pop." By contrasting the lightness of the one with the power of the other — like showing off two sides of the soul — Olson gets at something undeniably human. -juan leon
