September 4 is the official release date for Yanked, the new EP from Yankee Bluff; however, it’s currently available to streaming and download. Subdued melodies create a quick catchiness, with lyrical precision, revealing itself with each additional rotation. It’s a tightly spun musical fabric, whose push and pull between upbeat optimism and dreary downs rocks one into submission. The band is set to perform at Space 1026 this Thursday, August 24, on a lineup that also includes Amanda X, Permanent Body, and Doe.
Lovechild bring ’60s psych Americana to the Knit on 08.29
Blending psychedelia with folk has been an established indie trend of the new millennium (so many dream pop bands out there!), but few remember that folk and psych rock had something more than a flirt back in the the ’60s… NYC’s Lovechild reference, in their sound, that very source. The band’s only song available for purchase on Bandcamp is a live, one-take, DIY jam that definitely evokes the "good ole days" of guitar-banging, basement-come-venue style shows. The simplest way to describe "Plant a Flower" is that it sounds like a grungier version of something by the Rolling Stones, on drugs. In a good way. Catch Lovechild at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on August 29th. -Geena Kloeppel
Cowboy Diplomacy Release New Single “No Alibi”
A quartet that dips deep into the blues-influenced well of Texas rock music, Cowboy Diplomacy embraces a sound as big as the state they claim as home. Ian Cohran(Guitar, Vocals), Brad Bentley (Bass), Zac Walden (Lead Guitar), and Matt Leslie (Drums) have taken the Austin live music scene by storm and continue to impress as their stature grows. Having recorded "No Alibi" at 601 Studios and having it mastered by Howie Weinberg (Wilco, Spoon), Cowboy Diplomacy is using Austin’s broad resources to hone their sound. With brash bluesy vocals and titanic guitar squeals, Cowboy Diplomacy’s "No Alibi" is a larger than life anthem that will bring crowds out wherever they play.
Zenizen Play Baby’s All Right 8/30
Zenizen is such a perfect 2017 listen, we can’t believe that they haven’t blown up. Soulful vocals by lead Opal Hoyt maintain the sweet spot of R&B that manages to blend an original tone with smooth scales. Backed by charming keys and at times unpredictable beats, all these elements make this group such a timely combo. But Zenizen is not that young. They’ve been doing this for years now. With yearly singles "Coldwood," Fiver" and "No Contact" released since 2015, they’ve been working on their jazz-infused music for a while. Like most good things, they only get better with age. "Australia" their 2017 release and first EP, is their most confident work yet. Listen to the three tracks on this new EP and take the time to enjoy "Expanding," a Rihanna-esque heartbreaking pop song, especially. See Zenizen at Baby’s All Right August 30th. -Allie Mille
ZORTON & THE CANNIBALS – NEW ALBUM “UNFAVOURABLE OFFERINGS”
Garage Doo-Wop from right here in Toronto. Interesting combo from Zorton & The Cannibals. They bring in the sounds of old school garage rock from the 60’s era along with the pop/doo-wop jingles from about the same timeframe and smash em together for a super catchy yet still greasy sounding record. Their latest album “Unfavourable Offerings” was just released last month. Along with 6 sweet tunes it contains some really cool album artwork. Available digitally or on cassette on their bandcamp page. See ’em live at the Shameful Tiki Room on August 31st. – Kris Gies

New Track: “Totality Piece” (Feat. Mary Lattimore) – Skull Eclipses
All over North America, folks are getting ready to witness the first total solar eclipse to appear in the U.S. skies since 1979. And Skull Eclipses, a new collaborative project from Philly’s own Lushlife, a.k.a. Raj Haldar, and Austin-based producer Botany, with assistance former local native/harpist Mary Lattimore, has provided us a soundtrack of celestial sounds for this afternoon’s momentous occasion. "Totality Piece" will also be aired on Philly’s WXPN and Austin’s KUTX during the height of the eclipse, in their perspective areas. Keep a lookout for more to come from Skull Eclipses, and please safely enjoy this rare event!
New Track: “Yottahertz” (Feat. Rigz) – Ralphiie Reese
A dimly lit, funky groove makes up the foundational, sonic setting of “Yottahertz,” a new single from Philly emcee Ralphiie Reese, featuring neighbor from the north Rigz. Found on his latest album Takeda Ahki, Rigz opens and Reese closes the door, with each emcee exuding a cool, composed confidence against the ominous backdrop, laying down a lyrical challenge in the process. Are you up for it?
Covey Releases First Single Off New Album, Haggarty
Boston-based indie-folk project, Covey, is gearing up to release a new record, Haggarty, and with it, a brand new single. "Same White Shoes" is a new indie anthem, with a sustained melancholy broken up by a bright, catchy sing-along chorus. Covey captures the listener with full-bodied guitar tones, unique and complimentary, and a wonderfully warm, analog sound. Soulful and engaging, the album is expected to be a must have for our playlist when it dropped on 9/22. Check out the single below. -Brian Varneke
Ritual Talk premiere video for new single, “Sense”
Among the many jaw-dropping moments from Ritual Talk‘s performance at Pianos a few weeks back, one that noticeably caught the eyes of the crowd was their artful 5-person vocal harmonization. With their newest single, "Sense" (brand new video below), they replicate that skill perfectly on record. The band’s second track from their upcoming debut EP, Rippled Glass, is soothing and ethereal as was their debut single, "Help I’ve Been Dreaming"; but the vocal performance here is sublime, floating over a more psych, alt-soul vibe. The track’s progression is reminiscent of Alabama Shakes’ soul rock "Sound and Color," mixed with Alexander DeSimine’s Dirty Projectors-esque vocals; the accompanying harmonies, and the final buildup, will send chills down your spine. And if the rest EP is anything as this single and their live performance, it will be one hell of a release. – Pearse Devlin
Melville drop new album and video for “Televised”
Portland has been known to be a good place for indie rock. With a wealth of bands that fulfill those sonic requirements there are certain ones that stand out from the rest. Melville is one of those bands.
The quartet just release their debut full length The New Zero, which is conceptually based around how the apex of past events in life lead to new beginnings. For one of the first tracks shared from The New Zero, titled "Televised," Melville also released a music video to go with it.
It follows a Madonna-in-the-80s dressed character on somewhat of a quest of trying to figure out what’s going on, it seems. Superimposed into some of the scenes are shots of Melville performing. At about three and a half minutes long, "Televised" is definitely an entertaining watch.
Check it out below and stream The New Zero over at Melville’s Bandcamp page.
PREMIERE: We Are Parasols – “dim”
Industrialgaze trio We Are Parasols are just like the rest of us – they see what’s happening in the world, who the main propagator of all that nonsense is, and have been wracking their brains as to how to cope with it all. Like many creative types, We Are Parasols took to their expressive outlet as a form of release, but it wasn’t what they originally had planned.
Today, they’re premiering a video for their newest track "dim" off their upcoming album Inertia. The song itself keeps on with their shoegazey electronic, but the video notes on a serious movements currently happening. We Are Parasols guitarist Jeremy Wilkins had this to say on the concept behind the video:
This isn’t the video we intended to make but it’s the video we felt we had to make. The track, “dim,” is the first single from our new album, Inertia. It’s a concept album which follows an android sex worker through a dystopian future. We sought to make a video that explored the same themes of the record; anti-authoritarianism, oppression, violence, and human nature. Much as the themes and sound of our record were drastically effected and shaped by the election of Donald Trump, the events of the past few weeks took a toll on our ability to make the video we wanted.
After several attempts at creating something nuanced, subtle and thoughtful we realized we were hitting a wall. Due to the nature of our album’s story it’s hard to portray our protagonist’s journey without images of fascism. Unfortunately, our real world is currently filled with disgusting images of fascism inside our own country and others. Without the artistic space for nuance or the willingness to risk appearing at all sympathetic to fascists we realized, as all good people have to do at some point, that we needed to change course.
So, we made an anti-fascist protest video. We realize this is a performative protest. It is not a substitute for concrete action. We do not intend for it to be. We have been in the streets and we will continue to engage. We encourage you to get involved also. #RESIST.
And there you have it. Watch the video for "dim" below. See We Are Parasols’ next show on 9.6 with Sex Park and Vacant Stares at White Owl Social Club. As always, #resist and #fucktrump.
